2 RE Overview based upon the Bromley Agreed Syllabus Curriculum Overview for RE - Nursery - integrated weekly at FS Religious Festivals and Celebrations based on the Nursery s intake of children. Focus areas linking to Religious Education in the Nursery. 3 Curriculum Overview for RE in Reception - integrated weekly Three areas of RE at FS Festivals and Celebrations Growing Together Caring and Taking Care All children to be taught about the attitudes embedded within Religious Education Commitment Open-mindedness Respect Self-esteem Appreciation and wonder
4 Autumn 1 Books and Stories Children to share their favourite book or story Children to listen to stories and talk about how different characters might be feeling. Children to hold and understand that religions have special books too from Christianity, Islam, Hindu, Sikhism and Judaism Growing Together Discuss Golden rules for class. Children make up rules for classroom or for specific activities e.g. sand play/lego. Discuss compliments think of a compliment for a class mate. Reverend/Vicar to come in and baptize a doll and talk about the Christian ceremony Discuss different communities they belong to Autumn 2 Festivals and Celebrations Discuss how the following festivals are celebrated (Hannukah, Diwali, Wesak, Christmas see scheme for specific ideas) Listen to the story of the festival and act it out through role play or puppets Draw favourite part of the story Visit from a visitor about how they celebrate Make objects significant to festivals Remembrance Day Family Celebrations (Christenings, weddings) Spring 1 Ourselves Discuss what is special about them and why Celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Discuss the way that Christians try to make a positive promise to keep during Lent. Look at a real Paschal candle then decorate a candle. Spring 2 Growing Listen to Creation Stories from different faiths and discuss Plant an Easter garden. (cc Science). How does it make you feel growing and planting something? Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar Eric Carlisle. Watch some chrysalis hatch into butterflies. Discuss the idea of spring bringing new life Christians believe they have new life because of Jesus. Talk about the joy of Easter Sunday. Easter through Art Summer 1 People Who Help Us / Caring and Taking Care Role play the different people who help us also linking to religions as well Year R dress up day as people who help them. Write thank you cards to someone who helped you Discuss how people believe their particular God helps them. Discuss helping. How do they help and take care of people? Invite a mum with a new baby in and discussed how the baby is looked after. What do they look after? Discuss the idea of rules that different faith groups have. Summer 2 Caring and Taking care Investigation of different religions using artefacts, books, stories and dressing up clothes Transition to Year 1 focus (friendship, new class, rules, community) Look at pictures of special places of worship for different religions Buddhist festival of Wesak (April) (see specific ideas)
5 Curriculum Overview for RE Year 1-1 hour a week at KS1 At the end of Year 1, children should (AT1) (learning about religion) Use some religious words and phrases to recognise and name features of religious life and practice. Can recall religious stories and recognise symbols, and other verbal and visual forms of religious expression. At the end of Year 1, children should (AT2) (learning from religion and human experiences) Talk about their own experiences and feelings, what they find interesting or puzzling and what is of value and concern to themselves and to others. Three areas explored within each religion: Authority and Worship Sacred and Inspirational Writings Lifestyles and Celebrations All children to be taught about the attitudes embedded within Religious Education Commitment Open-mindedness Respect Self-esteem Appreciation and wonder

Interviewing the Vicar Symbols of Worship What is the Holy book that Christians follow? How do the belief and practices affect the daily life of many Christians? Spring 2 Judaism and Easter What do Jewish people believe about God? What is important about the early life of Moses for Jewish people? Why is Joseph (genesis 37) important to Jews? Where do Jewish people go to worship? The Easter story Sequence of events Comparison of Bible accounts Easter through art The artists choice of settings, clothing and mood Colours and symbols most often used What could appear in a picture just before this one or just after Holy week The different feelings expressed by Jesus, the Disciples and the crowd through Holy Week. 7 Curriculum Overview for RE - Year 2 1 hour a week at KS1 At the end of Year 2, children should (AT1) (learning about religion) Use religious words and phrases to identify some features bf religion and its importance for some people. Begin to show awareness of similarities in religions. Retell religious stories and suggest meanings for religious actions and symbols. Identify how religion is expressed in different ways. At the end of Year 2, children should (AT2) (learning from religion and human experiences) Ask, and respond sensitively to, questions about their own and others experiences and feelings. Recognise that some questions cause people to wonder and are difficult to answer. In relation to matters of right and wrong, recognise their own values and those of others.
