3 GIRLS LIMUDEI KODESH UPDATE Dear Parents, It is quite apparent here at YBH that Chodesh Kislev has arrived! As you enter the lobby, the magnificent educational bulletin board prepared by the first grade girls will catch your eye. The girls expressed their creativity and Hebrew sentence writing skills with a beautiful exhibit of Chanukah based themes. A special hakaras hatov to our dedicated Morah Devorah and Morah Sara as well as our wonderful assistants Morah Dina and Morah Penina. Last Friday, our G.O. girls shared the following poem at our Rosh Chodesh assembly introducing the occupation of fire fighters and the middah of גבורה for the month of Kislev. They distributed a hot treat to relate to the theme. Kislev is here So Chanukah is near The fires we will light, They ll light up the night While the Maccabim fought, Torah was taught, גבורה they showed, As their bravery glowed The Torah we will save, Because like firemen, we are brave Enjoy your chips that are BBQ Know you can fight for Torah, too! A few weeks ago, the YBH family experienced the loss of a very special woman, Bubby Sylvia Gold, Dr. Gold s mother. Many of the girls remember Bubby Sylvia from the many YBH functions she attended as she shepped nachas from each and every girl. Bubby Sylvia will always hold a special place in our hearts. She was a woman who always had a charming smile and שמחת החיים. I shared the following inspirational poem with the seventh and eighth grade girls in her honor to inspire us to emulate the special qualities that Bubby Sylvia possessed. The eighth grade girls will dedicate their yearbook in her memory. May all the efforts by Dr. and Mrs. Gold on behalf of the children at YBH be an aliya for her neshama. 4 ה A A Peek Peek Into Into Our Our Week Week: Morah Goldberg s Kitah Ches: High school season is in the air as the 8G girls are busily scheduling interviews and preparing for them. In class we are sharpening our preparation skills by focusing on translating a pasuk on our own. We are also using Rashi as a tool to properly understand the pesukim by examining what is bothering Rashi with a particular phrase, what his answer is, what words of Rashi are the explanation for the answer, and finally, how his answer actually answers the question. We then go back to the pasuk and translate it according to Rashi. This will, BE"H give the girls the confidence to delve into the pesukim and Rashis on their own. On the Navi front, we are getting ready to begin our limud on the Bais Hamikdash, which appropriately coincides with the upcoming Yom Tov of Chanukah. The girls will be learning about the construction of the Mikdash as well as creating a beautiful project of their own. Morah Pollak s Kitah Gimmel: Each third grader is perfecting reading and working on translating true stories of tzadikim, while answering comprehension and dikduk questions. In our Chumash lessons, during chazara, girls take turns assuming the role of junior morah by reteaching a pasuk while being recorded. Then girls take turns listening to the lessons at home. Thank you to Rina, Leora and Temima Esther for being the first to make creative posters on Kavod Habrios and Yiras Hashem. We are excited to put on our own creative Chanukah skits by the end of the month, I H, for our class to enjoy. Morah Millman s Kitah Vav: The sixth grade girls are on a roll in their learning, social skills building and more. In Chumash, we are building the mishkan and working on skills within Parshas Teruma. We completed learning the details of the aron and shulchan and are up to the menorah, just in time for Chanukah. We are building on our social skills, mainly through our Shemiras Halashon program. Once a week we have an activity in which we are randomly match the girls up with a peer and they have a half minute to a minute to give and receive a compliment. Then we switch partners and continue the same. We also started a program in which the girls voted on their choice of its name and it was decided to call the program Heart 2 Heart, thank you to Yakira Rothberger. Next up we voted for our business card design. The winner will be announced shortly. Then we will brainstorm practical ways for our students to help children in need of a refuah shlaima. We look forward to continuing our great year. Business card designs created by kitah vav for their Heart 2 Heart program 7G Bridge Contest: As a follow up to the 7G trip to the Tappan Zee Bridge, the girls had a contest to see who could build the strongest popsicle stick bridge out of 100 popsicle sticks. First place winners were (bridges withstanding 23 lbs. of mud) Rusi Hirsch, Chaya Karfunkel, Racheli Hack and Elisheva Weiner. In second place (17 lbs.) were Avigayil Shmalo, Leah Sima Manevitz & third place (15 lbs.) were Becky Bral, Esther Sebbag and Nechama Rosenblum. ECD HIGHLIGHTS!הצלה is for The ECD children had the privilege of exploring the inside of a Hatzalah ambulance, courtesy of Mr. Zahler. The children did the mitzvah of giving tsedakah by donating the entire class s tzedakah. In total, they donated about $75.00! Ms. Platt s Art Class: The girls had fun creating owls out of paper towel rolls and cupcake liners. We love recycling projects! Mrs. Bromberg s Second Grade Class: The girls learned about cause and effect and drew beautiful pictures demonstrating different cause and effect examples. The girls are enjoying singing songs incorporated into our learning. They already know songs about consonant digraphs, safety and about asking questions. The girls are increasing their sight word vocabulary as we add new words to our sight word rings each week. The girls arm tap out each new word and practice a cumulative list with a student teacher each week. Morah Rosenberg's Kitah Daled: With all the excitement going on in our class, the girls almost forget how much learning is taking place. In Ivrit, we passed around visuals, such as shoes, and identified them in Hebrew. It was tricky at first, but became a fun game and a great review. In Chumash, we sang and jumped into boxes of shoroshim, prefixes and suffixes. We got a real workout and will surely remember the words. In Navi, we baked cookies in the shape of Eretz Yisroel and labelled all the places we are familiar with. In Yesodei Halashon, we formulated our own motions to the V'ahavta L'reacha Kamocha song and enjoyed a quick exercise in a fun, controlled way before we sat down to learn. We are practicing for our Chanukah play and are excited to perform for our parents in various roles such as drama, choir, dance, scenery and with creative props.
