In the עשרת הדברות it is written; זכור את יום השבת לקדשו in פרשת יתרו & שמור את יום השבת לקדשו in פרשת ואתחנן. Chazal tell us זכור ושמור בדיבור אחד נאמרו that both were miraculously said at the same time. The simple explanation of זכור refers to the positive command to remember Shabbos, which we do when we say שיר של יום during the week and when we say מקדש השבת in our tefilla on Shabbos. We enhance the observance of זכור in our Kiddush over wine. The word שמור refers to the ל ט מלאכות one must refrain from violating and adhere to. The question is: What additional message about Shabbos is there in parshas Ki Sisa that ושמרו בני ישראל את השבת has to offer us? The אור החיים הקדוש refers us to פרשת וישב when Yaakov Avinu scolded Yosef for talking about his dreams. Yet the pasuk says ואביו שמר את הדבר. Rashi points out that שמר means he waited for the time when the dream would come true; היה ממתין ומצפה מתי יבא. The word שמר is a positive word, implying the hope for the realization of Yosef s dreams. Here too, in parshas Ki Sisa, the word ושמרו is expressing a positive idea, says the אור החיים. The Torah is teaching us that one should look forward to the coming of Shabbos with anticipation. The ברכת אברהם, (rebbe of Slonim) explains that one should protect and guard the gift of Shabbos like one would guard a diamond. How? With מחשבה, מעשה & דיבור in order that Shabbos will remain strong for generations to come, לעשות את השבת לדורותם. The way one prepares, anticipates and spends Shabbos will determine the future of Shabbos in his family for generations. Although שמור also refers to the negative aspects of keeping Shabbos ( ) ל ט מלאכות, more importantly, it includes one s yearning for the coming of Shabbos ממתין ומצפה מתי יבא. If one has a deeper appreciation of the halachos and meaning of Shabbos, every aspect of שמור is also included in the beauty of זכור as well! Keep collecting and submitting Box Tops to win more prizes. Language Arts Project TORAH FAIR HIGHLIGHTS We are so excited by the smashing success of our Yedios Klaliyos Fair. The overflowing crowd enjoyed the creative and interactive projects presented by our talmidim. In a fun way, participants learned about varied topics such as the bracha of Asher Yatzar-the wonders of our human body, the kedusha of Shabbos and much more. Using their Check Out Card, participants could then test their knowledge and earn a prize. Parents and students alike praised the superior effort and the wonderful product it produced. In honor of Purim Katan, our boys' grades 1-5 enjoyed an assembly complete with lively dancing, a game themed on learning about each other, to see what's behind the mask, and of course, hamantashen. We're also proud to share that our middle school grades 6-8 have joined the rest of the community in a daily Machsom L'fi initiative. This is being undertaken as a z'chus for Devorah Stubin, Devora Bas Avraham Yosef A"H, and to continue the ruach of achdus with the yeshiva and the community. The program was kicked off with an activity highlighting the effects of our speech and demonstrating how our words can't be taken back once they've been spoken. This initiative will run until Purim. We wish everyone much hatzlacha. Have a Good Shabbos, Rabbi Binyomin Perlstein PTA CORNER The PTA is thrilled to have sponsored an exciting presentation for the ECD children by the Small Wonders Puppet Theater. Thank you to Morah Perele for coordinating this event and giving the ECD children an opportunity to see brachos and Shabbos come to life!

3 EXCITING EVENTS AT YBH MAZAL TOV TO Mr. Yitzchok & Mrs. Shira Kessock & Pinny (N) on the birth of a son Boys Hasmodah SNOW TUBING trip was a huge success! Ms. Malka Yurowitz (Nursery morah) on her marriage to Eliyahu Basch Aharon Yosef Korbman (4B) & Yosef Gross (2B) each completed maseches Sukkah with a siyum HOT LUNCH WEEK OF FEB. 29: All NEW substitution requests for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are required. Please goodshabbos@optimum.net OUR AMAZING PTA We would like to publicly express our appreciation to the PTA for all they do to enhance the school experience for all our students. Some of the recent projects that the PTA has been involved in, which we thank them for are, the Wednesday GS enrichment period, the Erev Shabbos Ruach Kumzits, Shachris Minyan Program, ל ט מלאכות programs, Girls Rosh Chodesh assemblies, middos programs, many exciting and educational class trips, the purchase of ping pong and foosball tables to help create our indoor recess room and SO MUCH more. 4 A Peek Into Our Week: Rabbi Wieder s Middle School Science Lab: The 8th grade took their biology lessons from the theoretical to the actual. In their studies regarding DNA, they first built a candy model of what our DNA looks like in the cartoon version. Then they collected their own cheek cells and extracted the DNA from the cells. The lab experience taught them many laboratory skills such as titrating minute quantities of liquids. They also experienced how the cellular membrane, a phospholipid acid, breaks down with a base of a soap solution. The end result; the ability to see a clump of their own DNA floating in an ethanol solution and transferring that sample to create a necklace for display. 7B working on simple machines and pulleys in Kinematics 1B-G learning about the creation of Adam and the body with Rabbi Wieder Rabbi Rajchgod s Kitah Vav: Mazel Tov to the talmidim on finishing Perek HaKones. This is a major accomplishment and we will be celebrating with an amazing siyum. Rabbi Aaron Cohen will be coming to "farher" our class, and we will be going on a fantastic trip to celebrate. The boys are very excited about this Sunday s "Mazik performance. In Chumash, we are well into parshas Acharei Mos and have finished learning about the Avodah on Yom Kippur. Keep up the super learning! Rabbi Hirschman s Kitah Beis: We will begin learning about Akeidas Yitzchok as the exciting conclusion of parshas Vayeira. The boys are looking forward to their second siyum in Chumash. We re getting ready to write our own megillos in preparation for Purim. We are looking for donations of tall Pringles cans to help make our Megillah cases. Please send in your empty Pringles cans earmarked for Rabbi Hirschman. Thank you! ECD HIGHLIGHTS It was wet, it was cold and we could not go out to play But ECD was all smiles, thanks to our amazing PTA A Brachos and Shabbos puppet show we did see Giggling, singing and clapping with glee Loud brachos from now on we will always say And know that Shabbos is our most special day!
