2 Professional Development One needs to care for his students and love them, for they are the sons that bring pleasure to him in this world and in the coming world. Rambam The Early Childhood faculty had a wonderful day learning together on Monday. Using the above Mishneh Torah as a starting point, the faculty explored various ways to communicate effectively with different types of learners to ensure that each child reaches their full potential at each developmental stage. Dynamic team teaching was another topic discussed. The faculty in the Learning Pavilion visited with colleagues in other yeshivas to explore pedagogical technique in the differentiated classroom. The yeshiva expresses its hakores hatov to all of our faculty and staff for their love and dedication to our children. inquiry investigation Veterans Day interpretation In the Learning Pavilion, the student s explored the origins of Veteran s Day. It dates back to the WWI which ended at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. Now it is a day when we honor veterans of all of our wars as well as those who serve in the armed forces. Rabbi Cherns discussed the importance of showing hakores hatov to those who protect us. He used Eretz Yisroel as an example where the residents of Yerushalayim neighborhoods have showered the soldiers protecting them during the recent waves of terror with so many gifts of food and treats that the soldiers couldn t eat it all and gave it away to the children. Mr. Jesse Sparks, the yeshiva s custodian, addressed the students. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War and reached the rank of sergeant. Morah Gabin explained that America has not always treated it s veterans so well and especially those who returned from Vietnam because it was an unpopular war. A New Government The boys in Dr. Spingarn s social studies class have a new appreciation for our government. Breaking into teams, the colonists to the New World, discussed the problems they would face and what type of government they would set up. For some Moshe Rabbeinu provided the example of good government while for others it was Dovid Hamelech. There were some very creative proposals. Perhaps the most radical suggestion was that kids should have the right to vote. The students then discussed the efficacy of each team s government and learned how difficult it is to create good government. They are now investigating what really happened in each of the 13 colonies. Thurs./Fri. Nov Thanksgiving. No school. Mon. Nov. 30 Olive Oil Workshop Mon. Dec. 7 Twos Chanukah Show Tues. The children discussed what it means to be a twin. In the Early Childhood Department the children learned that although Yaakov and that Esav were twins they were very different. Eisav liked to hunt and had lots of red hair, while Yaakov liked to learn Torah and had smooth skin. ו י ג ש י ע ק ב א ל י צ ח ק א ב יו ו י מ ש ה ו ו י אמ ר ה ק ל ק ול So Jacob drew near to Isaac his י ע ק ב ו ה י ד י ם י ד י ע ש ו: father, and he felt him, and he said, "The voice is the voice of Yaakov, but the hands are the hands of Eisav." (22) The children enjoyed a week of exploring different textures and sounds based on this pusuk from the parsha. Yaakov heard a different voice, but felt the hands and saw they were hairy. The children explored textures through closing their eyes and touching and feeling different types of materials. Some were smooth, some were fluffy, and some were rough. The children also explored different sounds. They listened closely as their moros shook different sound boxes. They tried very hard to name that sound. They heard bells jingle, a chirping bird, a squeak, and even a horn. The children also enjoyed listening to a Rabbi Mordechai Dubin cd and sang along to his Yaakov and Eisav song. Registration 2016 is now open. Please send in your paperwork Please send in your PTA dues of $36 if you have not done so BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION An easy way to support your yeshiva Mazal tov to Avraham Ben Arbon On his recent Bar Mitzvah
3 Around the Early Childhood This Week The twos Parsha The children learned that in Parshas Toldos there was a big Mazel Tov, Rivka had twin Boys! Their names were Yaakov and Eisav and they were very different. Yaakov loved to learn Torah while Eisav had a lot of red hair and was a hunter. The children enjoyed acting out being Yakkov vs being Eisav. They also created their own twin paper bag puppets out of various materials. They used red yarn to depict Eisav and made tzitzit and a kippa for Yaakov. We spoke about the how different people like different things and how to discuss respectfully people s differences. Color- We explored the color green this week. We looked outside to see if we could spy any green leaves on the trees. We observed the trees and noticed most of the trees did not have any green leaves rather the trees had red, brown, and orange leaves. We discussed the season of Fall and how the change in weather creates the change in the leaves. Each child decorated the green frog page from their Brown Bear book and pointed out different green items in the classroom. We also made a green collage out of many different green materials. Gross motor- The children bounced in the bounce house as the weather was not so conducive for outdoor play. The children took turns bouncing and counted to 20 for each child to have their own individual turn. Fine Motor- The children practiced lacing with small strings and intricate lacing boards. They worked on lacing in order being careful to not skip a hole. Rosh Chodesh- On Thursday it was Rosh Chodesh Kislev. We learned it is the beginning of the month of Chanukah! Each child finger-painted their own Rosh Chodesh hat with many bright colors. Hebrew language- te umim (twins), se ar adom (red hair), chayos (animals), yarok (green) and tzefardeah (frog) The threes Parsha Toldos- The children created their own Eisav and Yaakov twin dolls. They spoke about the difference between Yakkov and Eisav and choose different types of fabric for each puppet. The children felt the different fabrics and used descriptive words to explain the fabrics. Wells- The children continued to discuss wells this week in conjunction with last week and this week s parsha. They created their own sensory gel water bags of various colors and contents, observing the different bodies of water. They also "dug their own wells" by finding blue pom-poms in the sensory table which were coved by grain. Hebrew Ois ד -We learned that Dovi begins with a Daled, so does dreidel, and dag (fish). The children painted the Dalet with paint and a marbles to decorate the Daled for their Alef Beis Torah. Silence is Golden...or Green-The 3's invited the 4's in for an afternoon experiment. All of the children received ingredients to make green goopy sand. The children worked silently as the experimented with the ingredients. The children observed different techniques mostly using trial and error to make their sand less or more goopy. Letter of the week E-The children talked about the letter E, and found out that Eliora, and Ellyn begin with E. The children used water paint, and salt to create a new medium called salt painting to decorate their letter E. They discovered that salt absorbs water paint and when it dries some of the pigments in the paint disappear. Homemade Play Dough -The Children took turns pouring in various ingredients to make their very own playdough. Then they choose a color and used their hands to mix the color in thoroughly. The used different play scissors, and plastic molds to create different shapes They also molded
4 their own buildings, fish, flowers, planes and rainbows. special gift all because of lentil soup! Mitzvos- The Kinderlach had so much fun writing and drawing different mitzvos and acting them out in the classroom. Yaakov loved doing mitzvos and did not want to lie to Yizchak, we spoke about how important it is to tell the truth but why it was ok for Yaakov to tell Yitzchak he was Eisav! Rosh Chodesh- Chanukah is coming and the classroom is a buzz of the exciting chag that is coming. We cannot wait to show and tell everyone what we have planned! Letter E- This week we learned the letter E signing the song, "E is for elephant and E is for Eagle, E is a special letter it has two sounds. We made Elmer the elephant, who has large ears but sometimes has difficulty hearing. When he hears a word correctly he gets a peanut. Some of the words he heard were Egg, everywhere, everyone, everything, elephant, ear, eat and eagle. We drew our own eagle, cut it out and decorated it with feathers. We read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, Elephants Aloft, The Blind Men and the Elephant, Oh My gosh Mrs. McNosh. The Fours Alef Beis- (TTTO the ants go marching). The Daled comes dancing into town DDD. dd Dag, DD Devash, DD Devorah, DD Dubie, DD Dalet, all start with Daled. We had so much fun learning all about the letter Daled! Did you know that the letter daled is made up of the same type of lines (vertical and horizontal) like a Beis, Resh, and a Gimmel! The children created their own Daleds out of playdough, Floam, crayons, and pencils. The children also enjoyed practicing writing daleds with sensory bags (gel + food coloring + Ziploc bags = tons of fun) and using lip stick to write on top of mirrors!! The children made so many fun daled projects. Did you notice our beautiful Dovdans (cherries), our fluffy Dovie's (bears) and our cute little Devorah's (bees)? Parsha- Parsha this week was all about TWINS!!! Yaakov and Eisav are twins but are not alike, Yaakov was very interested in learning Torah in his tent while Eisav enjoyed hunting in the fields! We spoke about the special gift the oldest born has, the Bochur receives a special inheritance. Eisav really wanted the yummy lentil soup because he was hunting all day Yaakov said " I'll give it to you if you give me the special bochur gift" and that is how Yaakov got the Science- We experimented with eggs during science. We
5 Pre-1a spun a hard boiled egg and a raw egg and when we stopped them the raw egg began spinning again. We learned that the egg inside the shell of the raw egg kept spinning but because the egg was solid in the other one it stopped spinning. We put the two eggs in vinegar and watched them for a few days. The shell seemed to disappear. The acid in the vinegar ate away the calcium in the shell leaving a very rubbery egg which we bounced on the floor. Art Experiment -We used artists palette s to learn about primary and secondary colors. We mixed red and yellow to create orange, red and blue to create purple and yellow and blue to create green. We used these colors to create a very colorful mural. So much fun! Math- We learned that a nickel has 5 cents, a dime has 10, a quarter has 25 and a dollar has 100. We counted pennies to add up to a nickel, dime, and quarter. We also learned that there are 2 nickels in a dime, 5 nickels in a quarter, and 20 nickels in a dollar, 10 dimes in a dollar and 4 quarters in a dollar. Continued Alef Beis review finishing up with end letters Practiced pre-reading skills by pointing to the correct letter and reading along with our friends as they practiced their letters Spoke about this week s parsha and created a parsha project which depicts that Eisav was a hunter and Yaakov liked to learn Torah. Math- We learned more math vocabulary words. We learned to read these words and apply them to the particular math problem. We learned to write the numerals six and seven using proper stroke formation. We modeled examples of sets and compared these sets in terms of greater than or less than. We completed our chapter 2 math assessment and showed proficiency in our understanding and implementation of common core concepts. Reading Rivers - We continue to add new sight words to our repertoire. We began to construct our own sight word tree. This personal sight word tree will grow with your child throughout the year so that it will blossom with words. We are starting to introduce the concept of phonics word families. We will combine phonics, CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) with a rich sight word reservoir to enable students to be fluent decoders. We have listened and discussed several stories to hone critical thinking and especially comprehension skills. Science Stars- We continue to study the power of wind and how wind can be harnessed as a source of energy. We made our own pinwheels. We used pre-engineering skills to construct our pinwheels and then watched them spin from the force of wind. As a STEM, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics program, our young scientists explore the world with question and the desire to find innovative solutions. Sky-Bound Specials On Wednesday we celebrated Veteran s Day by introducing the class to a lesson on civics. We learned who veterans are and how they help the United States of America to keep free. We made our own modern veteran. We made a poster V is for Veteran. We had a special guest appearance from our very own Mr. Sparks, a veteran of the Vietnam War. He told everyone how much he loves America and how veterans keep our nation safe. We stood tall and were very proud to live in America. Chai Lifeline Once again Stein Yeshiva is collecting toys for Chanukah sick children, infants through teens, in any price range. There is a wrapped box in the front of our building for the toy collection. Chai Lifeline will pick-up the toys from us after Dec. 16th. It is a great mitzvah for your children to participate by providing toys. Please see the enclosed flyer for more details.
