The Back-To-School Night Program is the opportunity for you to meet your children s teachers, and find out about upcoming Judaic and secular programs. Your child will leave a letter or drawing for you to enjoy. Please respond with a note in your child s cubby. 2 SPEECH AND LANGUAGE TESTING Our Hot Lunch Program began last week. Please remember to post your menus in a prominent place at home and mark the days you ordered lunch for your children. A calendar was included with your order forms for this purpose. Please note: It is not possible to rely on the school to provide lunch for your child(ren) on the days that you did not order from the Hot Lunch Program but forgot to send lunch from home. We cannot sell lunches on the spot, all orders are placed with the caterer in advance of at least one week- and we do not order extra meals. Please remember that Mondays and Wednesdays are meat days, so children who bring their own lunch may bring meat lunches on those days. Remember to send pareve snacks on those days as well. The speech and language screenings will take place next week. If you have not responded to the letter but are still interested in having your child tested, please call Mrs. Shifra Sharfman at NUT FREE SCHOOL To protect the health of our allergic children, no nuts or nut products will be allowed in the Early Childhood Program. Also, please check that all foods contain NO TRACES OF NUTS. All lunches, snacks and Shabbos treats must be nut free. If you send cupcakes or birthday cakes to school, please check with the bakery to make sure that they are nut free. PTA NEWS Class mothers are a vital communication link between home and school. 3 EARLY DISMISSAL If a child must leave school early, parents should go to the office to obtain a school dismissal note. Please do not go directly to your child s class. FLYER POLICY Toras Emes is now accepting approved business advertisements for distribution to our families. To have your flyer distributed, please send us a print-ready original or a copy of the flyer by Wednesday at noon on the first and third weeks of the month. The flyers will be stapled together as a supplement to the weekly newsletter. The fee is $40 per week and payment must be received in advance, checks payable to Toras Emes. Flyers announcing appropriate community events will continue to be distributed free of charge as in the past provided the 375 copies are received by Wednesday Noon for that week. SHOFAR FACTORY A fascinating program on how shofars are made was presented to the pre-school children by Rabbi Yosef Ganzburg. The children actually saw how a ram s horn is cleaned, sanded, and polished. They were shown a variety of shofars and even had a chance to practice blowing a shofar. 5 NURSERY I & II MOROT ETTIE & TAMI Let s take a Machzor And let s take a walk To a river or a lake today (2x) On Rosh Hashana we go to tashlich To throw our aveiros away. The mitzvah of Tashlich was taught this week in conjunction with the concept of Teshuva. We listened to the book A Rosh Hashana Walk by Carol Levin. We discussed where the shofar comes from and how it awakens us to do teshuva. We also had a wonderful experience when the Shofar Factory came to visit us this week and showed us how a shofar is made. We listened to the three different sounds that a shofar makes and learned the song The Shofar In The Shul. We made our own Rosh Hashana cards and sang the songs Tapuchim B Dvash and Apples Dipped In Honey. Our new Hebrew words this week were We also listened סליחה,תפוחים בדבש,מתוקה, מחזור to several stories about Rosh Hashana. Our favorite was How The Rosh Hashana Challah Became Round by Sylvia Epstein and How The Mitzvah Giraffe Got His Long Neck by David Sokoloff. We brought a scale into our room to measure our mitzvos and aveiros. As we pretended to weigh all of our good and bad deeds, we became familiar with several mathematical terms such as more, less, heavier, lighter and equal. The special foods eaten on Rosh Hashana were discussed with the children. We looked at the round challot and made a list of other round foods which we eat such as doughnuts, rolls, crackers, bagels and pita bread. We also talked about the special prayer book-the machzor- which we daven from on Rosh Hashana. We would like to wish you.כתיבה וחתימה טובה and your family a NURSERY I & II- MOROT NECHAMA & SUSAN Welcome to our new Nursery class. We had an exciting week. This week, we started a unit on Feelings. We discussed with the children the various feelings that can be expressed such as being happy, angry, lonely or sad. The children were shown angry face and happy face pictures and then created their own happy and angry faces. In art, we made faces out of clay to express our many different feelings. The children listened to the stories I Was So Mad by Mercer Mayer, Feeling Sad by Joy Berry, Sometimes I Feel Like A Mouse and The Way I Feel by Janan Cain, How I Feel by Marcia Leonard and Nobody Asked If I Wanted A Baby by Martha Alexander. During circle time, we learned the fingerplay song Happy Little Ball. I have a little ball (make hands like a ball) It has a happy face (draw a smile on lips with fingers) It rolls to me (point to yourself) It rolls to you (point to your friend) It rolls everyplace (outstretched arms) Toras Emes E.C.E. 6 PRE-KI, II & III- MOROT ETTIE & HEIDI We started off the week getting comfortable in our new classrooms, making new friends and being reunited with our classmates from last year. We played the game Hasheim Sheli as we each had a turn to introduce ourselves. We discussed Chodesh Elul and are concentrating on doing mitzvos in preparation for Rosh Hashana. We learned the word Teshuva and how it pertains to all of us. At the Shofar Factory program on Friday, we learned that a shofar comes from a ram s horn and we listened to the various sounds of the shofar. Our favorite two stories this week were Shofy and Blowfy by Malka Danziger, The Hardest Word by Jacqueline Jules and Sammy Spider s First Rosh Hashana by Sylvia Rouss. Rosh Hashana is just one week away. We have been learning many different minhagim that we do such as eating challah and apples dipped in honey, eating the head of a fish and a rimon. We tried counting how many seeds there were in the rimon. We have learned many songs and have made many projects for Yom Tov. PRE-KI, II & III- MOROT BERNEY & JUDY Our first week of school was very exciting. The children adjusted to the new routines, rules and environment. We had fun seeing our old friends and meeting new ones. We helped decorate our room, and of course, hung up our special projects. We began our first unit on self awareness entitled All About Me. We will be talking about how we are alike, and how we are different. We made selfportraits which are hanging up on our bulletin board. We will be creating our very own books which we will be happy to share with you. We had fun listening to different sounds in our environment and playing sound games which our morahs say will help us to discriminate between sounds (a pre-requisite to reading). We practiced creating rhymes and listening to rhyming stories. We have a new emphasis this year in our Pre-K pre-reading program. Many of the activities in the program will be focused on developing phonemic awareness. Toras Emes E.C.E. Ne 6

7 KINDERGARTEN I & II- MOROT BAYLA & RENA Bruchim Habaim L Kitah Gan! What a funpacked week we had. We enjoyed seeing our old friends from last year and were so excited to meet our many new friends as well. The Seder HaYom and all of the rules that make our classroom into a fun and safe place to be were reviewed each day. We learned about the month of Elul and how we can grow closer to Hashem by doing mitzvos. We compared the shofar that we blow each day in the month of Elul to an alarm clock which wakes us up to do Teshuva. During the month of Elul, we try to accumulate as many mitzvos as we can. Songs, projects, stories and hands-on experiences all created an exciting atmosphere for the upcoming Yom Tov of Rosh Hashana. In our listening center, the children enjoyed listening to the story Shofy and Blowfy by Malka Danziger. This week is a double Parsha. In Parashas Nitzavim, we heard how Hashem loves us when we learn Torah and do mitzvos. What happens if we make a mistake? We know that we can do teshuva and Hashem will forgive us. In Parashas Vayelech, we learned about the mitzvah of Hakhel. Once in seven years, the king gathered all the Jews in Yerushalayim and read parts of the Torah to them..כתיבה וכתימה טובה Our best wishes for a May you have a year filled with good health and nachas from your entire family. KINDERGARTEN I & II- MOROT BERNEY & MIRIAM Our Kindergarten classrooms reverberated with the happy sounds of excited children entering a brand new world. The children adjusted very easily to their morot, the new rules and their new routines. What a joy it is for us to watch their faces as they go about working at their various activities. We know we are going to have a wonderful year- a year full of many different kinds of experiences. This year, all of us are excited about the addition of a new component to our reading program. We are going to emphasize phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. We will teach the small units of speech that correspond to the letters of the alphabet. Research has shown that children who are taught phonemic awareness early on will become better readers with a more solid foundation. (The word cart has three distinct sounds--/c/ /a/ /t/ while the work bike also has three sounds--/b/ /i/ /k/. We are looking forward to our Back To School Night on September 14, when we will be able to talk more about our new program. This week, the children helped us write down the rules in order for all of us to have a better and safer environment for learning. We also practiced writing our names correctly. The children made lovely self-portraits and compared the two of them. Hopefully, we will see how much we have grown during the year. Toras Emes E.C.E. Ne 7
