B H WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2017 VOLUME 6 ISSUE St., Edmonton, AB T5N 3L1 Phone: Fax: menorahacademy.org ~ office@menorahacademy.org Our first Rosh Chodesh Assembly was an energetic and fierce battle of recollection and speed for our Grade 4-12 Boys as they challenged one another in the popular trivia game, Kahootz. Rabbi Salter compiled 28 questions ranging from Chumash questions to trivia about their Rebbes and teachers. In an epic finale, the winner was decided on the last question, and had a point separation of 647! Congratulations to Asher. W., Michael G., Lev C., and Efraim G. The Great BIG Challah Bake Menorah staff and students were proud volunteers at this year s The Shabbos Project Edmonton presented by the Shabbos Project, Menorah Academy and the Edjge. Menorah parents, Mrs. Devorah Kaplan and Mrs. Carla Lehrer, organized the first event, the Great BIG Edmonton Challah Bake, where Mrs. Devorah Pinson spoke about the deeper meaning of the ingredients in Challah and bringing them together. Mrs. Miriam White, Menorah s Grade One teacher, gave a demonstration of making Challah. Thank you volunteers and everyone who participated in this beautiful event. Our Grade 1-3 students enjoyed a video about Kever Rachel and played a game of Pass the Present. Mrs. Salter introduced a twist to this game inspired by Rachel s sacrifice and selflessness. Our students were split into two groups and if they were lucky to have the present when the music stopped, they were to sacrifice the opportunity to open the present and give it to a friend to open. At the end of the game, every student received a present, and everyone had a great time!
PAGE 2 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 6 ISSUE 3 WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2017 KINDERGARTEN Busy Hands and Busy Days in Kindergarten Kindergarten is diving right into mastering the א -ב with lots of different activities, including matching games, workbooks, lotto, א - ב and forming letters with manipulatives. Check out our paintings! In preparation for the yuntif of Succos, Kindergarten learned about the mitzvah of eating in the Succah. We painted Succos themed watercolor posters and built a mini succah in the block center. We love getting creative and working together! Boys Grade 7-12 Simchas Beis Hashoava/Sukkos party The Kinders hand mixed colours and explored their school neighbourhood on warm fall days. Letter and number activities from paint to computers challenged and delighted the children.
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2017 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 6 ISSUE 3 PAGE 3 PRE-K New Ivrit Curriculum Menorah Academy is excited to be starting a new Ivrit program called Bamesila. The workbooks are skill based and have helped further develop Hebrew vocabulary. Additionally, certain classes have begun an Ivrit social skills program using B Chavod Rav - a children s Hebrew comic book. Rabbi &!Pinson &Family On the birth of your daughter Chana! Wishing the entire family health, happiness, & nachas! Pre-K had a colourful week in honour of Parshas Noach. We made rainbow challah for Shabbos, made fruit loop rainbows for our Shabbos party, and we made the most interactive bulletin board in the whole school! Every day, we decorated and designed an element of the Parsha. During the first day we coloured and added Noach and the animals, but then the flood hit! Fortunately, we were safe! We were greeted with a magnificent rainbow, and in the beautiful blue sky, we saw the white dove with the olive branch! We had fun creating this awesome display. We also celebrated yom adom (red day) because we learned that the colour adom starts with an aleph! Rabbi Sass surprised and joined us for our yearly yom adom picture. Thank you, Rabbi Sass, we liked your red hat!!
PAGE 4 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 6 ISSUE 3 WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2017 In honour of Parshas Noach, Kindergarten mixed colors to paint a huge rainbow. They sorted and matched by colour to collage the rainbow with various materials. Then they added the Hebrew color names. Come check out our colourful bulletin board! For the yartzheit of Rochel Imeinu, Grade One constructed a mosaic of the kever and learned about how special Rochel Imeinu was. Zev W. Menorah s first Grade 4 student to lead davening. Our Grade 4 Boys have been playing a lot of games in their morning class lately. Fortunately, Ms. Mitchell has given them permission to do so! Math games are very popular in this class, and today, in order to practice their multiplication, the boys are having a game of Mush Math! Let s play! Chumash Projects on the Shevatim, the 12 tribes of Israel: Grade 4 Learned about Bircas Yaakov In order to prove how well we know all of the different brachos that the Shevatim received from Yaakov Avinu, we were asked to create the bracha out of clay. We used our artistic skills, as well as notes from class, to remind us who was compared to what animal/ thing. The projects have been on display in the hallway, so we hope you check it out for yourself!
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2017 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 6 ISSUE 3 PAGE 5 GRADE ONE For a fun project for Parshas Lech Lecha Grade One made a puppet sheep with snout and all. Working on our Hebrew English Dictionary! Playdough letters Grade One is almost done learning all our script cursive l e t t e r s! H e r e w e a r e practicing with our playdough to get those letters just right. TODDLER & NURSERY Toddlers & Nursery students were very busy decorating flags for Simchas Torah! We also had fun with rocks! We had to place rocks on a variety of printed patterns. Our favourite was the spiral! We then placed leaves on a sticky surface and sometimes our fingers were stuck on, not the leaves! What an awesome, funny experience! Our Toddler students did their best at kneading the challah dough to help Morah Olga prepare her well known, and appetizing, Challahs for Shabbos. They did a great job, too!
