The obvious question is, why? עבד (straight) and the rules of ישר is תורה The are 100% proper, so why weren t they given עברי to all the nations? The pasuk says in Tehillim:...and it מגיד דבריו ליעקב חקיו ומשפטיו לישראל was not given to the.אומות We can understand why חוקים were only given to ישראל,כלל since no reason was given for them, and it is the Jewish people who were fortunate to receive these laws as a way of showing closeness to them for all דינים though, are,משפטים their faith in Him. The (laws) which reflect proper conduct one should show when dealing with money matters. There is only one right way when it comes to one s dealings in business. Why does דוד המלך continue and say לא עשה כן לכל גוי ומשפטים בל ידעום - The other nations were not given these just and straight laws? It they are just, it should be the law of the land for everyone! מדרש Rav Yaakov answers using a Midrash. The tells us that Hashem said: Just like I created the world in six days, with the seventh day being a day of rest, so too the עבד עברי works six years and goes free in the seventh year. We see from the מדרש that what the תורה calls משפטים (laws).משפטים and חוקים are really a combination of This means that in every משפט there are components of חוקים along with it.,עבד עברי When the Torah tells us the laws of בריאת included in them are the fundamentals of (faith) אמונה (creation) which reminds us of העולם and of the מצוה of,שבת which is interwoven in the six days of creation and the seventh day of rest. We see from here, that right in the middle of discussing money issues, we are shown the דעות and philosophy of Torah and emunah. (This could be why it is placed between the two places in the Torah that discuss תורה יתרו in -מתן and at the end of.(משפטים Therefore, משפטים is not just well. as חוקים it is mixed together with,משפטים I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Jeff Brenner, an expert in Egyptology, and a YBH parent, for presenting to our middle school students how many aspects of Egyptian history can be found in, and are alluded to, in the Torah. I (and the students) were fascinated by his expertise on the topic. I would venture to say that he was not just teaching the history of Egypt, it was interwoven with knowledge of Torah, חוקים and interesting. that made the lesson so,משפטים I would also like to thank our very own and popular Mr. Nagel for inviting me and arranging the special event for our students, and of course, our guest, Mr. Brenner, who enhanced the level of the Social Studies program immensely. No big assembly or new innovations. No earth shattering occurrences and no curricular changes. Nothing! Then, I thought to myself, Oy, vey! I sound like the kids! How often do we ask our children what they learned today and get Nothing! as an answer? How many times do we ask them how their day was and we hear The same as usual as a response? Well, nothing is very misleading, because the usual wonderful nothings I saw this week are really quite something else! As I walked the halls this week, I saw the first grade brainstorming the many contractions they use each day in speech without ever having thought twice about what they mean. The children were deep in thought plumbing their little minds finding more and more examples and breaking the words into two then figuring out which letters had been removed to create the contraction. That was GENERAL STUDIES UPDATE word retrieval, language analysis and problem solving Then I went into the second grade where the children were writing independent essays describing characters in a story, how they are alike and how they are different. What a great activity to develop higher order thinking, expressive language and reading comprehension The third graders were adding words to their own personal word walls that s oral vocabulary expansion and differentiated learning! The fourth graders were carefully working through mathematic calculations, the fifth graders were engaging in a fun filled warm up to get ready for a day of vigorous learning in a positive atmosphere and the sixth graders composing letters to IDF soldiers to wish them a Purim Sameach. The seventh grade was engaged in a mind-blowing scientific experiment using their own sense of taste to find genetic commonalities between themselves and their peers (It was so much fun that I actually stopped to join them. While I was thrilled that I couldn t taste the bitter substance that had some of them shrieking, I did miss out on the fact that I couldn t taste the cherry flavored one either!) At my last stop for the day, I enjoyed hearing the eighth graders be introduced to a new project, wherein they will research the different viewpoints of Jews in the 1800s and then engage in a philosophical debate remaining true not only to their research but to the historical perspective of the time period. Wow that s tough! History, research, persuasive writing, oral expression, multiple viewpoints, application of knowledge Like I said, nothing new this week. 3 Dear Parents: LIMUDEI KODESH UPDATE BOYS When you re involved in running a yeshiva, one special source of nachas is initiating a program and seeing the positive impact the program has made upon the talmidim and their families. Our just completed winter Hasmadah campaign is a perfect example of that. As we ve often discussed in this forum, our Yeshiva s objective is to influence and inspire well beyond the classroom. We look to teach a תורת way of life חיים incorporating all aspects of learning, מידות and overall יהושע in פסוק The.הנהגה והגית בו יומם ולילה says:...and you shall study it (the Torah) day and night. At its highest level, this is epitomized by talmidei chachamim who spend every waking moment learning. This פסוק is also the source for devoting some time for learning by day and night. That s why our Hasmadah campaign was structured on consistency. It is meant to impart the lesson that every day (and night) needs time for Torah. With chasdei Hashem, the results of this effort have been amazing. Most of the boys in the entire yeshiva have successfully fulfilled the requirement. In fact, some entire classes did it! What s even more special is the impact this has made at home. One father told me about a new seder he began with his son between the time he came home from shacharis and would take his son to school. Another father would get up early to learn with his son. I ve also heard about the changes made during mid winter vacation. Along with their fun time, boys made sure to include time for learning, too. These are just some anecdotes, of which there are surely many more that I haven t heard yet. While I know that some programs must end at some point, I hope that the learning doesn t end. I hope the good habits practiced over this period continue to perpetuate themselves. I am heartened by the father who began that seder before school. He told me he sees that it is possible to carve out time in a busy schedule to learn with his son and will continue to do אשריכם! so. זכות May we all enjoy the to learn Hashem s Torah and experience the feelings : דוד המלך expressed by מה אהבתי תורתך כל היום היא שיחתי I love your Torah so much. 4 A Peek Into Our Week: Rabbi Goldberg s Kitah 1B-G: 1B-G had a siyum celebrating the completion of Perek Aleph in Bereishis, where we learned all about the days of creation. Rebbe brought in treats to represent each day s creations and the boys got to guess what it was going to be. Day #1 was marshmallows and chocolate chips for light and dark; day #2- blue powerade for the sky; day # 3- sunflower seeds for grass; day #4 yellow and white jelly beans for the sun and moon; day #5- jelly fish candies and crawling insect toys for the animals; day #6- animal crackers. The boys acted out the pesu-,אדם kim and played the role of with an abundance of energy. Day # 7 came just in time for vacation and they came back re-energized to start Perek Beis. Mrs. Weinstein s Middle school math class: The 6th grade math classes just finished a unit on equations. They learned how to write and evaluate algebraic expressions and write and solve equations, which are the beginning skills of algebra that will prepare them for high school algebra. We played a review game on the Smartboard, which is an interactive board game with questions from the material in our algebra unit. This is a board game with "go back to start", "move ahead 2 spaces", "switch with another player" spaces, which are played by teams. What an enjoyable way to learn math! Rabbi Finkel s Kitah 5B-F: In honor of our גמרא,התחלת the class took a trip to תלמידי Lakewood. In Lakewood we met with two distinguished ראש the הרב יצחק סורוצקין שליט "א -First we met with חכמים of Telshe Yeshiva and Lakewood Mesivta. He spoke to הישיבה the boys about how every boy has great potential in him. We have to use all our strength to utilize our great potential. Then we met with הרב מלכיאל קוטלר שליט "א the ראש הישיבה of Lakewood Yeshiva. He spoke to the boys about the great importance of learning גמרא and how lucky we are to be able to סיום s house to have a רבי. After that we went to גמרא learn on פרשת שפטים. We ended this great trip with an unforgettable visit to the Living Torah Museum of Lakewood. We have just competed our first daf. This should be the start of many more dafim. Mr. Nagel s Middle School Social Studies: Our YBH Boys Student Council members left school at 8PM on Thursday, before mid-winter vacation. No, the school day had not been extended, rather they had been hard at work launching new programs and helping to spruce up the hallways. The Student Council announced a new art contest. The student council members also decided on new slogans that they believe reflect values that YBH embodies and the students should strive for. The hallways have been selected as the best way to spread the message. The first slogan has been posted outside the Beis Medrash YBH--Middos, Mind, Heart. Look out for more in the weeks ahead! From running recess sports leagues, volunteering to help Hurricane Sandy victims, to creating fun and exciting contests--the Student Council has helped create a model for leadership and great programs that have added to the ruach in the halls of YBH. Mrs. Skerett s 1B-G: This week our class theme is called "Shaping our Community." We are learning about our community and different people that work to help keep it a nice place to live. Some amazing words we are learning are "citizen, leader, and community." We are also writing friendly letters to our families using the art of persuasion to let us do or get something we really want! In math we are learning all about shapes, plane and solid, and how our community is made up of them! Pre1A s Amazing Trip: ECD HIGHLIGHTS In preparation for the upcoming storm, Pre1A made snow as the science activity at the Jersey Explorer Children s Museum. Other activities included becoming archeologists, and learning hieroglyphics as they went on a treasure hunt through ancient Egypt. The steep ladder and secret panels added to the mystery! The children traveled to Louisiana and enjoyed playing on Main Avenue where there was a grocery store, fire station, bus station etc. In anticipation of Purim, the children made groggers. The grand finale was a very funny and entertaining puppet show. Some of the children even wanted to sleep at the museum! Thank you PTA for this absolutely wonderful day!
