2 INTRODUCTION Muzaffarpur district, The Land f Leechi was created in 1875 fr administrative cnvenience by splitting up the earlier district f Tirhut. Nw, Muzaffarpur district is a part f Tirhut divisin. The present district f Muzaffarpur came int existence during the 18 th century and is named after Muzaffar Khan, an Afghan revenue fficer under the British. In 1972, the districts f Sitamarhi and Vaishali were split ff frm Muzaffarpur. Muzaffarpur is bunded by the districts f East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Vaishali Saran, Darbhanga, Samastipur, West Saran and Gpalganj. Muzaffarpur is ne f the many gateways t Nepal. The imprtant rivers flwing thrugh the district are Bagmati, Gandak, Burhi Gandak, and Lakhandeyee HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Accrding t the Ramayana, King Janak ruled Videha, which is the traditinal name fr nrthern Bihar including east Bihar. Muzaffarpur s recrded histry dates back t the rise f Vajji republic, a cnfederatin f eight clans f which the Lichchhavis were the mst pwerful and influential. Muzaffarpur was successively under the cntrl f Harshavardhan, the Pala kings, Chedi kings, the Sena dynasty, Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq and Sikandar Ldi. Under the mighty Mughal empire, a separate Subah f Bihar was cnstituted and Tirhut frmed a part f it. The East India Cmpany gt cntrl ver whle f Bihar after its victry in the battle f Buxar in Muzaffarpur played a prminent rle in India s freedm struggle. During India s freedm mvement, the first bmb was explded in Muzaffarpur in Khudiram Bse, an 18 year-ld Bengali revlutinary, was hanged fr thrwing a bmb at the carriage f Pringle Kennedy wh was mistaken fr Kingsfrd, the district judge f Muzaffarpur. The intrepidity f Khudiram Bse and his cmpanin Prafulla Chandra Chaki arused the natinalist spirit f the cuntry and stirred plitical awakening. The visit f Mahatma Gandhi t Muzaffarpur district in December 1920 and again in January 1927 had tremendus plitical effect in arusing the latent natinalist feelings f the peple and the district played a prminent rle in the cuntry s struggle fr freedm
