2 INTRODUCTION Gaya is ne f the thirty-eight administrative districts f Bihar. Gaya was ntified as a district n Octber 3, Earlier, Gaya was a part f the erstwhile district f Behar and Ramgarh. In 1976, Aurangabad and Nawada were partitined ff frm the territry f Gaya and in 1986 Jehanabad was carved ut. Gaya district is a part f Magadh divisin. Gaya district is bunded by the districts f Jehanabad, Nawada and Aurangabad f Bihar and district Chatra f Jharkhand. The river flwing thrugh Gaya district is Falgu. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Gaya has ancient mythlgical and histrical significance. Gaya derives its name frm the mythlgical demn Gayasur, whse bdy became s pius after he perfrmed penance and received blessings frm Lrd Vishnu that he had the pwer t abslve the sins f thse wh tuched him r lked at him, hence peple flck t Gaya t perfrm funeral bsequies / Shraddha n his bdy t abslve the sins f their ancestrs. Gaya finds mentined in the great epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. Lrd Rama alng with Sita and Lakshmana visited Gaya fr ffering Pind-Daan t Dashrath n the bank f river Niranjana, the frmer name f river Falgu. Gaya is sanctified by Hindu, Buddhist and Jain religins. Gaya is surrunded by small rcky hills namely Mangala-Gauri, Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila and Brahmayni n three sides and the river Falgu flws n the furth side. Hindus perfrm Pind Daan ritual in Gaya n the bank f river Falgu fr redeeming the suls f their ancestrs. Gaya has experienced the rise and fall f many dynasties such as Sisunaga, Nanda, Mauryan, Guptas, Pala and Khilji. It ccupied an imprtant place in the cultural histry f India frm the 6th century BC t the 18th century AD. Bdh Gaya is the mst hly place fr the fllwers f the Buddhist faith frm acrss the wrld. Ashka visited Gaya and built the first temple at Bdh Gaya t cmmemrate the enlightenment f Gautam Buddha. The all India sessin f Indian Natinal Cngress was held at Gaya in 1922 under the presidency f Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das.

STONE CRAFT Patharkatti in Gaya district is the traditinal stneware centre f Bihar. 12 HERITAGE & TOURISM Gaya is ne f the majr turist attractins f India and is an imprtant centre fr religius turism. Ghats and temples are lined n the banks f the sacred Falgu river. Hindus visit Gaya in September t participate in Pitripaksha -the annual festival f suls. Vishnupad temple: It is the seat f final salvatin. The ftprint f Vishnu is marked n a blck f basalt which symblizes Lrd Vishnu subduing Gayasur by placing His ft n the demn s chest. The present-day temple was rebuilt in the 18th century by queen Ahilya Bai Hlkar f Indre. Mahabdhi temple: Main mnastery at Bdh Gaya was built by Emperr Ashka t cmmemrate the place where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment and als preached his first sermn. Pilgrims visit Bdh Gaya during Vaishak Purnima which is celebrated as Buddha Purnima. Mangla Gauri shrine: It is marked by tw runded stnes that symblize the breasts f the mythlgical Sati, the cnsrt f Lrd Shiva. Jama Masjid: It is the largest msque f Bihar. Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary: It was pened in Gaya in 1976.
