2 NOV 18 NOV 19 THE WEEKLY WORD We call them our Church All-Stars those singular saints in each congregation who have stood out because of their love for God and for God s preachers and their families. Our very first appointment had quite a number of them Jerry, who met me every Sunday morning at seven a.m. to pray for the services Merle, whose kitchen was always open to us, offering both catfish and counsel and many more in that quaint little town who taught a preacher boy how to do his work better. Then there was Alfred in another parish, a quiet Englishman who faced terrible tragedies in his own life but always focused on the lives of others Joye, the widow who lived up to her name Joyce, who cared for whole generations of kids and Jan, the missionary whose faithful (and often very funny) fervor made her the world s best Sunday School teacher. There were couples who became a Priscilla and Aquilla to us and others who allowed us to step out of the stereotypes and become actual friends. And the list goes on as we have added to it after leaving each appointment. Some have now joined the Church in Heaven, of course, but some remain to cheer our hearts here. Or in the words of Charles Wesley, part of his host have crossed the flood, and part are crossing now. All Saints is a day for remembering those who have encouraged us in our lives and shown us the love of God more clearly. So who s on your All-Star list this morning? 5 join us for... SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER NEXT SUNDAY DR. PAUL WRIGHT President of Jerusalem University College Want to understand more about why God used the land of Israel? Dr. Paul Wright will be at Christ Church next Sunday to preach in all three morning services and to present a special bible study at 5 pm. President of Jerusalem University College, our partner in our Israel study trips, Dr. Wright received his Ph.D. in Bible and ancient Near East Studies from Hebrew Union College and has published numerous works on biblical history and geography. Like woodworking, which he also enjoys, Paul believes that teaching, writing, and fieldwork all require a measure of patience, an eye to detail, and a willingness to get one s hands dirty to create something useful for others.
