2 THE WEEKLY WORD Spring Training in the Spirit by Pastor C. Chappell Temple TODAY S FOCUS 02 It s a funny word. For grammarians will tell you that it s simply the past and past participle of the verb to lend. Spelled slightly differently, with an I rather than an E, for computer folks it refers to the tools that analyze source code to be able to flag programming errors, bugs, and suspicious constructs, all of which sounds suspicious to me. And, of course, when you pull your clothes out of the dryer, it s those tiny bits of fabric fibers that are shed from the edges of the cloth, similar to the fluffy fibers that somehow show up in our navels as well! Oddly enough, however, even though it s used religiously, you won t find the actual term in the Bible at all. For the word Lent comes from the realm of nature, and more specifically, from the Old English term lencten that refers to the lengthening of the days which takes place each spring. (Or global lengthening as some might call it.) And there s something wonderfully encouraging about that idea, I think. For it s a daily reminder to us that the dead of winter is itself now dying and the world around us is being renewed once more. As we begin yet another Lent in our church s life, thus, we invite all to join us for a spiritual version of another seasonal rite, namely, Spring Training. For just as our Astros are now in Florida getting ready for Opening Day, we ll spend the next six weeks in worship getting ready for our big opening day as well, namely, the celebration of the Empty Tomb and Resurrection at Easter. And as the days lengthen, we ll be moving deeper in our discipleship by talking about some of the classical disciples or holy habits that can help us grow in our faith. Or, in short, borrowing a term from John Wesley and those early Methodists, our goal will be simply going on to perfection. I hope you will get your God-glove on and join us. And don t worry we ll take it easy on you so as not to make your spiritual muscles too sore too soon. Looking for a church home? All are warmly welcomed at Christ Church. We invite you to stop by our Welcome Table downstairs in the Gathering Hall where you can find out more about our congregation. First time guests can also pick up a special welcome gift there. If you would like to join the Christ Church family today, you may do so either by professing your faith in Jesus Christ, or by transferring your membership from another Christian congregation. Simply fill out a new member card which may be found in the Sanctuary pew racks and bring it with you as you come to the front to meet the pastors during the closing music at any of our services. If you have not yet been baptized, we will be happy to recognize your decision today as well as arrange for a convenient time to talk with you about the meaning of that sacrament before scheduling it for one of our upcoming worship services. For more information about our programs, staff and beliefs, please visit our website at SUNDAY WORSHIP SCHEDULE *All morning services are held in the Sanctuary.
