1 WORSHIP GUIDE - MAY 20, 2018 PENTECOST SUNDAY
2 THE WEEKLY WORD by Pastor C. Chappell Temple TODAY S FOCUS 02 The story is told of a young missionary, Herbert Jackson, who received a car in order to help him with his work. It was a great gift, but the only problem was that the car wouldn t start without being pushed or jumped from another car s battery. And so the missionary figured out how to overcome that problem. Whenever he was ready to leave his home, for instance, he went to a nearby school and asked if some of the children could come out of class to help him push-start his car. And during the day, he likewise always parked on a hill, or left his engine running when he stopped for short visits. For two years, thus, Herbert Jackson did whatever it took to be able to use that car. When he got ready to leave his assignment, Herbert accordingly began to explain to his replacement all of the methods he had devised to start the car. But when the new missionary opened the hood and began looking around, he replied, Brother, I think the only trouble is the loose cable. He gave the cable a twist, pushed the switch, and the engine roared to life. For two years, thus, Herbert had used his own devices and endured all kinds of needless trouble. Because the power to start the car was there all the time it just needed to be connected. Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit the Power of God is ready to work in and through us as well. Jesus told us, in fact, that if we can do even greater things than He did through the Spirit if we believe in Him. Maybe it s time to plug in to that power and appropriate that presence in our lives. Or we can just keep parking on a hill and try to do it all ourselves. Looking for a church home? All are warmly welcomed at Christ Church. We invite you to stop by our Welcome Table downstairs in the Gathering Hall where you can find out more about our congregation. First time guests can also pick up a special welcome gift there. If you would like to join the Christ Church family today, you may do so either by professing your faith in Jesus Christ, or by transferring your membership from another Christian congregation. Simply fill out a new member card which may be found in the Sanctuary pew racks and bring it with you as you come to the front to meet the pastors during the closing music at any of our services. If you have not yet been baptized, we will be happy to recognize your decision today as well as arrange for a convenient time to talk with you about the meaning of that sacrament before scheduling it for one of our upcoming worship services. The Awakening by Joseph M. Martin I dreamed a dream, a silent dream of a land not far away. Where no bird sang and teardrops fell like rain. I dreamed a dream, a silent dream of a land so filled with pride that every song, weak and strong, withered and died. I dreamed a dream, No alleluia, not one hosanna, no song of love, no lullaby. And no choir sang to change the world. No pipers played; no dancers twirled. I dreamed a dream. Awake! Awake! Awake my soul, and sing! The time for praise has come. The silence of the night has passed; a new day has begun. Let music never die in me! Forever let my spirit sing! Wherever emptiness is found, let there be joy and glorious sound. Let music never die in me! Forever let my spirit sing! Let all our voices join as one to praise the Giver of the song. Awake! Awake! Let music live! *DOXOLOGY (sung by all) Alleluia! Alleluia!
