2 02 THE WEEKLY WORD Return to Robes My good friend Ben Trammell said it well, I think. For while wearing his clergy robe one Sunday, he was asked by a young child why he had on that black dress. And without missing a beat, Ben replied simply, Because it goes with everything! The truth is, of course, that robes evolved out of the earliest days of the Christian faith when they constituted the common dress of the Middle East for everyone. When clergy wore them, it was thus a reminder of how God can take the ordinary and use it for His purposes. As Christianity spread to Europe, however, where robes were not really practical for the colder climes, clergy continued to wear them as a mark of reverence and humility. In that respect, the robe is meant to emphasize the office of a pastor and de-emphasize the personality of the one in the pulpit. In essence, it is to cover the preacher so that all his or her listeners see and hear is God s Word rather than whatever garb the pastor may happen to be wearing. It s for that reason that most clergy robes are black, though some may equally wear an alb, from the Latin word meaning simply white. Likewise, stoles have been worn by ordained clergy since the 6th century as a reminder of the yoke of Christ that binds each pastor as a servant of God. Following the tradition of the church, those who are elders such as myself wear it around the neck while deacons, such as Pastor Johnson, wear it like a sash, passing from their left shoulder to their right side. In the end, all that really matters is that as God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, we each clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, as Paul told the Colossians.
