Second Chances at Happy Hens What have hens got to do with hurting and homeless people? Paul & Amanda Munro moved to Derby in November 2017 for Paul to start working for Derby City Mission. Their first home was unsuitable long term so, early this year, they began looking for somewhere else to live. To cut a long story short, and by a God-incidence they are now living in a house on a farm. However, it is not just any farm, but a farm that has been used for many years in ministry to help hurting people be healed & restored. Roger and Beryl, the owners of the farm, who God has used in ministry, are now ready to retire and want Christians to take over the farm. Happy Hens is a Care farm. These farms are described as a unique way to provide an improved quality of life for an individual, or for a group of people. Care farms are supervised and structured, as the people who run them watch over the well-being of the entire group. People who stay at Happy Hens are encouraged to help with the egg process collecting, cleaning and looking after the hens which roam outdoors as well as be part of the community. Prior to all this, before they moved to Derby, Paul had a vision of God giving them a farm where they could work with hurting people, alcoholics and addicts. They believe that God wants to pass the mantle over to them so they are busy looking into ways to raise the funds required to buy the land & business. Roger and Beryl have had lots of commercial interest and offers to buy the farm but they are holding out for God to put the right people in place to pick up the mantle of the ministry. This is a huge undertaking and Paul and Amanda are stepping out in faith. A new prayer group is forming to support them in both this amazing opportunity and Paul s work with Derby City Mission. There will be prayer s once a month and a prayer meeting every month or bi-monthly (yet to be arranged). If you are interested in any way please contact Helen Bennett: david.helen2@gmail.com.
Reuben Pearse recently shared a picture he had had through the Sunday Services. We asked him if he would share it with all through the magazine: The first part of the picture came to me during the 10:30am service. I saw traffic lights at a junction - the lights were red. It was dark and there was no traffic. I was in a car... "why have I got to stop?" I thought. Then I thought of the frustration of having to stop when a pedestrian has pressed the button at a crossing but then has already crossed the road by the time you get there. I felt God was saying that he wants us to STOP and pray. We have to make time for him! The red lights are there for our benefit and when we pray it's for our safety and for other peoples benefit. I then saw smoke coming out of chimney, and I thought it must be a house with a log fire. Then I saw inside the house, and there wasn't a fire, but it was someone praying in their front room. The smoke was actually incense rising up to heaven - this reminded me of the verses in Revelation where the incense represents the prayers of God's people... Revelation 5 v 8 - And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God s people. Revelation 8 vs Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God s people, went up before God from the angel s hand. Then I saw the car at the red light again, and then the picture "zoomed out" - I was now looking across a city and I could see hundreds of cars all stopped at red lights - people who had stopped and prayed. I then realised that when we ignore the red light and just keep driving, it's like when we do things in our own strength - not waiting for God but rushing ahead with our own plans and ideas. This activity generates fumes that pollute the atmosphere. But when we stop and pray we generate incense and allow to God to work. As more of us pray we start to change the atmosphere over our towns and cities. During the evening service, the picture came back to me (more fully formed than before) as it seemed to tie closely with us praying for God's justice and I felt strongly that I should share it. A couple of minutes before I came up to share, the final piece of the picture came to me. The issues that we see around the world, the injustices, the hurt the pain (homelessness, human trafficking, persecution, etc.) are like red lights. Each issues requires us to stop and pray. I felt God say "how many more red lights do I have to put in front of you before you stop and pray?" Every blessing Reuben

Three Church Members recently returned from a Mission Trip to The Middle East. Below are some of their thoughts: Inspiration - whole trip, energised by faithful prayers + the Strengthener Intentional - workers on a mission intimacy - redefinition of prayer / worship Prayer House - established with / in love - an arresting thin place Privilege - awesome to accompany Graham and friends in their natural habitat Guard your heart (above all) - sharing Prov 4 25 with the believers No joke - Jesus uses willing - warts n all nobodies to achieve His impossible Hospitality + kindness from local families - many, many unexpected treats Controlled culture - based on respect / honour / family / shame / appearance Reflection - from afar on our own culture and its oblivion to freedom Biblical truths - unexpected impact of natural middle East. Wilderness, stars, river beds, oasis Squatty potty - daily count your blessings! (too much information already!) Hot tip - put coffee down first when attempting to sit on floor Flight upgrade - try to impress cabin crew at the start rather than end of flight Mission Trip - guaranteed antidote if you feel YOUR GOD IS TOO small - honest!
Seeing other places and cultures helps us to learn and draw nearer to god. When I first heard about the possibility of going on a mission trip I was up for it, 100% which came as a bit of a shock to my wife and family, and even I was not sure why I felt the need to go I just knew that God had a plan for me to go so I went for it. As the time to got nearer the nerves were there but chatting with others and realising they felt the same way too made it ok. We had chats with our guide on the trip, who explained where we would be going and where we would be praying. This information he gave us was also very helpful and practical. We also had to pray for my visa because that was seeming difficult to get cleared but God answered all of our prayers and it was approved the next day. We got to the airport and were met by our guide and hosts. It was lovely to finally meet them. We prayed for our journey and made our way to base for the first few nights, had fellowship with them and learned more about the lovely people of the country. Over the next few days we met other people and they gave us a lovely welcome and we were able to eat, drink and talk together about all sorts of things that we found in common and sheared with each other about the differences with our cultures etc. We managed to also visit a few mosques and chat to the guys at the information office over some dates and coffee and take some information away that they gave us, we also visited a market place. The guys that we were staying with showed us around many parts of the country and explained about how the culture and history of the country. We also went to an ancient fort were I got an amazing feeling of how the places that Jesus visited may have been in his time. There was a hole in a roof of a house, which gave me a clearer image of how people lowered their friend down to the Lord to be healed. We even saw new palm trees being planted and watered by lorries which was a must in this very hot country, as were we experienced temperatures in the 40s. Without this care and attention they would-not stand a chance of growing. This was an amazing, touching experience were I felt so close to the Lord, and had the chance to be with people who have devoted their lives to work for him in some of the most challenging circumstances. They were so open and welcoming to us it was very humbling. The whole week, knowing folks back home were praying for us was a great experience that opened my eyes to a world out there that needs our prayers. The only way to get this is by going and putting your trust in God to help us through the tough times - and he did that because we had no issues at all. The whole week went better than we could have expected thanks to the Lord s help every hot step of the way. Praise the Lord.

Parenting teenagers is harder than ever for most parents today! If you are a parent or carer of a teenager, even if you don't have any major issues, please read on. This course is for you. No role we undertake in life is more important than parenting. The most exciting and rewarding aspect of parenting is helping children develop character and a sense of worth, helping them work out who they are, and developing a strong and mutually enriching relationship. We are the main influence on our teenagers future. Meeting our teenagers deepest needs, setting healthy boundaries, helping to develop their emotional health and teaching them how to make good choices takes skill and dedication. Taking time to reflect on our end goal can help us to build a strong relationship with our teenagers now. Family life is under great pressure today and parents face bewildering choices about how to parent effectively. Although there are many parenting experts, there are no expert parents! The secret of successful parenting is to balance love and boundaries, in other words, gentleness and firmness, being able to say both yes and no. Positive parenting means using warmth, love, respect, consistency, good communication and empathy in the way we behave with our children.
Discovering we are not alone in the challenges we face and picking up ideas from other parents can make a huge difference. Parenting courses can be really informative and helpful, sharing tried-and-tested techniques that help us handle our children firmly but lovingly. This informative course is for parents, stepparents, foster parents, grandparents and carers of pre-teens & teens aged The course covers: Keeping the end in mind. Meeting our teenagers' needs. Setting boundaries. Developing emotional health. Helping them make good choices. Starting on Tuesday 25th September consecutive weeks, each Tuesday, 7.30pm 9.30pm, at Sutton Coldfield Baptist Church. Cost 15 per person or 25 per couple (parenting the same children). Includes workbook each and refreshments. If cost is an issue please talk to us and we can help. Places are limited Please book in advance. Please contact: Alan & Karen Cobbald parenting.scbc@gmail.com or contact the church office on More information at

The Current Group Looking to go deeper in your faith and invest more heavily in your discipleship? How about D 2? D2 aims to deepen our identity as disciples of Jesus, to equip us further to disciple others and to lead and serve in the areas in which God has gifted us. This will be done through spiritual, theological and personal formation. We will also aim to develop and grow relationships within the group to form a serving, discipleship community. Training will take place on a Friday morning starting with breakfast, followed by that week s training session. Therefore numbers are limited to enable relationships of trust to be built throughout the year s training. Early on we will be led (by an accredited coach) through Strength Finders which will help us individually discover our areas of gifting to help us decide where to invest most when serving and leading, both within and outside the church. If you would like to apply please deb@scbc.org.uk to be sent a link to an application form or to ask any further questions. Places are limited so please apply asap if you are interested. The course costs cover Bible college fees, the Strength Finder s coach, food, and training books and materials essential to other aspects of the training. Payment can be made as a one off payment of 500 for the year (one month free), or monthly payments of 50 over 11 months, starting in Sept Please speak to Deb or Donald if payment is a problem we don t want anyone to feel they are unable to apply due to finances.

We seek to serve Jesus in different ways. For some of us our main expression of our desire to live for Jesus is expressed in our care for our family, for some of us our workplace is the focus of our commitment to Christ, for others of us health or other constraints means this is a season of rest and prayer. In all these situations our Church seeks to support, encourage, inspire and equip this walk of faith. However for others the Church offers opportunities to serve Jesus, give back to others, use and grow in gifts, develop deeper friendships and build a legacy in people that outlasts us. There are lots of opportunities to serve in the church depending on your interests, time, and ability and where you feel you could fit in. It might be in Children and Young peoples work, Community or befriending, or serving in the range of catering needs we have. If you would like to talk to someone about where you might be needed please contact Donald or Georgina at the church office. Wednesday Evenings Are you free on a Wednesday evening and would you like to have fun whilst helping others to enjoy a meal before our Wednesday evening courses such as Alpha? If so you may be able to help. You would not be needed every week, and we are particularly in need of people that are happy washing up and maybe waitressing. Please see Cath or Paula if you are able to help or office@scbc.org.uk.
Over the last six months the demands on the Foodbank have increased. This is due mostly to the Benefit changes, moving people from weekly to monthly payments which has proved difficult for some to manage. As we continue to serve those in the community through their crisis times we are asking that if you can you commit to donating the same item each week to help us know that the food will be supplied regularly. If you can help please take a ticket, or several and bring the food regularly to the church. If you are still bringing items regularly from last years tickets could you take them again or take the opportunity to change your items by taking something different. Thanks. Georgina Whateley. On 10 th June onwards, in the foyer there will tickets for each item we need each week. This will show you the extent of the need that we currently have. We are feeding on average 48 people a week. In the last 5 months 60% have had three bags or less and about 10% we are helping long term, some are homeless and receive no benefit.
