HEART WARMING: GETTING WARMER 15+ BIBLE VERSES: John 15:26 16:15, James 4:8 To explore the prayer Come Holy Spirit, challenging young people to pray this prayer expectantly. LEADER S NOTES This is the second of two sessions written to support the global prayer initiative; Thy Kingdom Come. This particular session explores the prayer Come Holy Spirit. One of the innumerable things that the Holy Spirit does is to warm people s hearts, so they are more open to the love and goodness and the knowledge of Jesus. He helps Jesus become real to them and they come to know his salvation plans and purpose for their lives. This plan has been designed to encourage and provide practical ways that young people could pray for the above for their friends and/or family members, asking the Holy Spirit to prepare their hearts ready to hear the good news of the gospel. Alongside this, young people will discover some of the things they can practically do to enable their friends to have an opportunity to hear about Jesus, as we also look at the role of the Holy Spirit in giving us confidence and the words to say when we witness to or friends. Through the activities included in this session, young people will have the opportunity to discover more about who the Holy Spirit is and what He does and how things change when we pray Come Holy Spirit. Before putting this into action, praying together and expecting things to change. Additional Needs notes: Further notes are added to this meeting plan, in bold, to help you to use this meeting plan with young people with a range of additional (special) needs. You might also like to explore some of the general tips and ideas for supporting young people with additional needs here: and will find this overview training video helpful: MELT IT! GAME WATCHER WARMING UP

This is a game for volunteers. Invite the young people to sit facing the front of the room, and ask any volunteers who want to play to come to the front of the room. Explain to the players that you will give each of them an ice cube to melt, using only their hands. Distribute the ice cubes, one per player, and on the signal to begin, prompt them to use their hands to melt their ice cube as quickly as possible. Watch carefully to ensure that they do not dispose of their ice cube in any other way! Award a small prize to the player who successfully melts their ice cube first and provide kitchen roll for the players to dry their hands. The Point: A just for fun game to gently introduce the theme for the session. Additional Needs: Include everyone who'd like to participate in this activity, not just the most vocal! Ice cubes, kitchen roll, small prizes DURATION: 10 MINS. HOT OR COLD? SCIENCE WATCHER WARMING UP DOWNLOAD THERMOMETER SHEET Arrange your young people in smaller groups and give each group a copy of the thermometer sheet and a pen. Challenge the young people to draw an arrow to the temperature on the thermometer that they think is the answer to the question you are going to read out and mark it with the letter that relates to that question. Temperatures: A. What is the freezing point of water? 0 B. What is boiling point of water? 100 C. What is normal body temperature? Accept between 36.1 and 37.2 D. What is the lowest temperature at the North Pole in winter? -40 E. What is the temperature of steam? 100 F. Over what temperature is water considered likely to scald you? 49 G. What core temperature should reheated food reach (and hold for 30 seconds) to be safe to eat? 75

H. What is the typical freezing point of sea water? -2 Once all groups have finished, check their responses and tell the young people the correct temperatures for each. You could award a small prize to the group who correctly identify (or closest to) the most temperatures. The Point: A fun icebreaker to gently introduce the theme for the session. Addition Needs: Ensure everyone gets an opportunity to have there ideas heard in their group. Print out of thermometer sheets and pens. DURATION: 10 MINS. SING-A-LONG 'LET IT GO' VISUAL AND AUDIO CLIPS WATCHER GETTING STARTED If you wish (as an encouragement!) you could start this activity by showing a clip of US Marines singing along to 'Let It Go' Challenge your young people as to how well they know the lyrics to the Frozen hit: Let it go. Ask for 2 or 3 volunteers to come to the front of the group, with the screen set up behind them and arrange the rest of the young people so that they can see both the performers and the video screen. Clip start time: 00:29:50 Camera pans across the mountains Clip end time: 00:33:20 Elsa slams the doors Length of clip: 4 minutes On the signal to begin, play the film clip with the song; Let it go, and ask the volunteers to sing along (with their backs to the screen). Challenge them to match their singing of the song to the track playing behind them as they perform their best Elsa impressions, actions welcome! Once the song is complete, congratulate each volunteer on their performance and award a small prize to the best performer, perhaps decided by a public ballot. The Point: A fun ice breaker loosely linked to the theme of the session. Additional Needs: Some young people may be sensitive to loud noise, so make sure they have access to ear defenders if required. The film Frozen (Disney, 2013) and the means to show it, a small prize

DURATION: 10 MINS. OPEN/CROSSED GAME WATCHER GETTING STARTED Arrange the group in a circle, seated on chairs, facing inwards. Explain to the group that you are going to play a game called Open / Crossed. There is a rule to this game which you are not going to explain to the players, if they already know the rule, they should keep it to themselves and if they think they can work out the rule, they shouldn t tell anyone, but just go along with the game, until everyone else works it out, or you declare the end of the game. As you begin to play the game, hold a pair of scissors in your hand and pass them to the player to your left. As you do so, you should say open or crossed. Pass the scissors with such an emphasis on the position you hold the scissors in as you are passing, that the other players will believe the statement open, or crossed relates to the scissors. The rule actually refers to the position of your own legs as you pass the scissors on whether you have them opened or crossed. As the other players in the circle pass the scissors round and state whether they are open or crossed, you should respond with a simple yes or no to tell them whether they have correctly identified and followed the rule. As the game continues, you can make it more obvious so that more players pick up on the rule, perhaps making an obvious show of crossing or uncrossing your legs as you pass the scissors over. When most players have worked out the rule of the game, explain it to the remaining players and explain that during this session, we are going to be thinking about what it means to be open, to God and the role of the Holy Spirit in preparing us. The Point: A gentle introduction to the idea that we have to be open, to hearing from God, before we can act on this. Additional Needs: Be sensitive to any young people with physical disabilities who may not be able to participate in this activity. Also, some Autistic young people might find it harder to link the open/crossed statements to something other than the most obvious one (the scissors) so may struggle with this activity. A pair of scissors DURATION: 10 MINS.

MORPH ILLUSTRATIONS BELIEVER GETTING STARTED Ask for two volunteers to come to the front of the group and give each of them a fresh packet of plasticine. Challenge them to make a model, perhaps of something specific as appropriate to your group, or perhaps give them free choice as to what they want to make. As they work, talk to the volunteers about what they are doing. Draw particular attention to the fact that when we take the plasticine out of the packet it is hard to work with and needs to be warmed up. Encourage the volunteers to talk about this and share what they notice about the plasticine as they do so. Once the models have been completed, thank your participants, and perhaps give each a small reward to thank them or run a contest to award a small prize to the winner. Explain to the group that this plasticine can help us to think about one of the things that the Holy Spirit does in people s lives. Sometimes we start in a position of being hard or cold to discovering the things of God, a bit like a fresh packet of plasticine. But the Holy Spirit can work in us to make us softer, or ready to hear the good news about Jesus, warming our hearts until we are ready to hear what God has to say to us. Just like the plasticine, it is only when the Holy Spirit has softened our hearts that we will be ready to be formed into followers of Jesus. Until then, we are cold or hard and cannot be changed into a new thing. The Point: An illustration to demonstrate what it means for the Holy Spirit to soften out hearts, ready to hear the gospel. Additional Needs: Some young people who have under developed fine motor skills might find this activity hard and might need some help, especially to get started. Plasticine + small prize (optional) DURATION: 15 MINS. IT HAPPENED TO ME STORY FOLLOWER GETTING STARTED Before the session, ask one or two of your leaders or young people to share a little of their own testimony, specifically thinking about the role of the Holy Spirit in warming hearts. This could be someone who can recall how they went from being cold and closed to the gospel to a position of being ready to receive what God had to say to them, and how they can see now how the Holy Spirit was working in their life. Or it could be someone who can talk about the way they witnessed this transformation in someone else s life, and perhaps share how they prayed for that person, or how God used them in that

journey. This activity would be more effective if you could invite two people to share the two different perspectives, and even more so if those two people were talking about the same journey of transformation; i.e. the person who experienced the work of the Holy Spirit in preparing them, and the person who walked alongside them. If not, however, it would still be powerful to hear the testimonies from both perspectives. The Point: To share real life stories of how the Holy Spirit works in people s lives to prepare them to hear the gospel. Additional Need: Hopefully the stories will be engaging and attention grabbing, but do look out for any young people losing concentration or becoming distracted. A fiddles box might be useful to aid focus here (see this video clip for info about fiddles boxes): COME HOLY SPIRIT VISUAL AND AUDIO CLIPS BELIEVER DIGGING IN The video clip introduces the Thy Kingdom Come initiative and comes from the website: thykingdomcome.global Introduce the clip: This film clip introduces an international initiative, which we are participating in, called Thy Kingdom Come. We are going to watch a film clip with the Archbishop of Canterbury explaining more about this prayer initiative and the background behind it. Length of clip: 4 mins 34 secs Watch the clips and then discuss with the group: What excites you about this? What challenges you about this? How does this compare to your impression of prayer? What does this film clip tell you about what it means to pray come Holy Spirit? Thinking particularly about this second prayer; how do you want to pray as a result of this? What do you want to do as a result of this? Open the Bible and read John 15:26-27 and remind the group that it was Jesus Himself who promised us the Holy Spirit. This is a vital message to us as followers of Jesus who live without Jesus walking amongst us. Jesus has promised us that we do not act out His mission on our own. Draw the discussions to a close and as appropriate, plan and provide opportunities to follow up these actions; perhaps praying together as a group,or providing an opportunity to pray at a later stage. For some young people, the focus here will be on praying that the Holy Spirit would open their own hearts, whist for others, they may be in a position to pray for their friends so the conversation that follows will depend upon the group and their own response to this message.

The Point: To explore the national initiate, Thy Kingdom Come, and what it means to pray Come Holy Spirit. Additional Needs: Some young people will need help to pick up on the main message of the film clip, so might need some support to identify this and also what it means. It might be helpful to briefly summarise the message and check that everyone understands it before moving on to the discussion questions. The Thy Kingdom Come intro film, and the means to show it, Bible DURATION: 15 MINS. WALK THE LINE ILLUSTRATIONS BELIEVER DIGGING IN This exercise requires a level of openness and honesty that may not make it suitable for every group. Leaders need to exhibit sensitivity and encourage young people to do the same. Lay out the length or rope or create a masking tape line through the centre of the room, from one end to the other. Ask your group to sit down together, away from the line, whilst you say. Today we are thinking about the prayer, Come Holy Spirit, and what it means for the Holy Spirit to work in people s lives and hearts, getting them ready to hear the good news of Jesus and be able to respond to that for themselves. We believe that each of us is on a spiritual journey. We may choose to walk closer to God, or we may choose to reject God and walk away; that s the amazing thing about God; He gives us the freedom to choose. There are times when we may stand still, and times when we are ready to take another step forwards. Invite the group to stand around the line that you have created on the ground. Ask a leader to stand at one end of the line and play the role of God. Invite the young people to take a position on the line, which they feel best represents their responses to the following in terms of the distance from God. Encourage them to be honest in their responses and remind the group that this is a safe place where they can be open about where they are at. This is not a test or a public confession but an opportunity to reflect on the issues for themselves. On no account indicate, or allow anyone else to indicate, that where one person is standing on the line is more or less significant then where anyone else chooses to stand. A position which represents: What it means (for anyone) to be a fully signed up follower of Jesus. What it means (for anyone) to have decided that they are not interested in God. Where they were at when they first joined this group.

Where they want to be. Where they are at right now. Encourage the group to think for themselves as they do this, and try to keep a calm, quiet, reflective atmosphere. Playing some quiet music may help with this process. Finally, ask them where they think God is in relation to where they are now. It s likely they will either say that He s where you said He was (ie. at the end of the line) or right next to them (ie. with them). The first answer suggests that God is distance from us. Suggest that, whilst we may feel this at times, this isn t true. The second answer is closer to the truth although, if we know Jesus, God s Spirit will be living in us (so He s very close indeed!). Suggest a third option. Call out a few names and get the leader who is playing God to move as close to the young person as they are from the furthest end of the line eg. if the young person is three steps from the furthest end of the line get God to move so they are three steps distance from them. (You will need to have briefed the leader in advance as to how this works). Repeat as necessary to make the point and then share the scripture from James 4:8 Draw close to God and He will draw close to you. Explain that this is about drawing nearer spiritually to God the more we seek Him, through prayer, worship or reading the Bible the closer He is able to come to us. Explain that, if your line were very long then the leader playing God would have need to have shouted to be heard. The closer that you are to someone the easier it is to be heard that s why choosing to draw closer to God makes it easier for us to hear His voice and for Him to draw closer to us through His Spirit. Thank the young people for participating Invite the young people to sit back down, still quietly, and challenge them to think about what it would take for them to take another step on that line. If we prayed Come Holy Spirit, over this group, how could the Holy Spirit work to make them more open at this particular stage in their lives? Depending upon the group, this may lead to an open discussion or it may be more appropriate to create some space where young people could talk on a more one to one basis. Have a Bible available as you talk and refer to the text in John 15:26 16:15 as you address particular thoughts and questions within the group. Ensure that you do provide an opportunity for the young people to respond to the invitation given as you draw this activity to a close. The Point: To give young people an opportunity to reflect in real terms as to where they are at in their spiritual journey and challenge them to respond to the work of the Holy Spirit in their own lives. Additional Needs: A great deal of sensitivity will be needed here, and this activity may not be for everyone. It might be worth having something else less intense happening in parallel that young people can opt into if they wish. Masking tape or length of rope DURATION: 15 MINS.

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BIBLE STUDY FOLLOWER DIGGING IN Arrange the young people in smaller groups, each with a leader and distribute the Bibles, copies of text and pens. Ensure that everyone has a copy of the passage and explain that the Bibles can be used to look at the text around the particular passage or look at other passages as becomes appropriate. Explain that this passage comes from a time close to the end of Jesus life on earth and here Jesus is preparing his disciples for the time when He will no longer be with them in person. Ask the group to look together to try to answer the Question: What does the Holy Spirit do? The small groups could explore this in a number of ways; perhaps creating a mind map, highlighting in the text or listing as bullet points. As leaders, help the young people to look closely at the text and discover things for themselves, acting as facilitators, rather than leading the discussions. Discuss: What does this text tell you about what happens when we pray, Come Holy Spirit? In light of this, what and how should we be praying? Draw your discussions together, exploring the two-pronged working of the Holy Spirit in that when we are ready to respond to the gospel, it is because the Holy Spirit has revealed the truth to us, and when we tell others about Jesus, it is the Holy Spirit who helps us to speak, and enables those we speak to, to hear what we have to say. We have the privilege of working with the Holy Spirit to tell other people about Jesus, but this passage teaches us that we are not limited by our own fumbling attempts. The Holy Spirit works through our mouths, to speak His words, and works in the ears of the recipient to hear the words of Jesus at the perfect time. When we pray Come Holy Spirit, we should pray expectantly, that He would work in both these ways. The Point: To explore Jesus teaching about the work of the Holy Spirit, as revealed in John 15:26 16:15. Additional Needs: The concept of the Holy Spirit is sometimes quite hard to grasp for young people with a literal understanding of the world, for example Autistic young people. A good short video that might be helpful is this one, using the analogy of milk and chocolate sauce! Bibles, copies of the text: John 15:26 16:15, highlighter pens and pens DURATION: 15 MINS. HOLY SPIRIT AFFIRMATION

MEMORY VERSE BELIEVER RESPONSE Give each young person a small piece of card with the words of John 16:13a typed up. Ask the group to read these words together, to one another, firstly from the cards and again from memory. Say the words to each other, affirming what it is that the Holy Spirit will do in each of us. Challenge the group to take the cards away with them and display them somewhere that will remind them to pray the prayer; Come Holy Spirit. Challenge them to remember the words of this memory verse. The Point: To encourage young people to learn the Bible Additional Needs: It might be helpful to have the words of John 16:13a displayed on a screen as well. A PowerPoint of the verse can be provided below. DOWNLOAD POWERPOINT The words of John 16:13a typed up for each young person DURATION: 10 MINS. FIVE FRIENDS PRAYER BELIEVER RESPONSE Give each young person a shoelace and explain that we are going to pray the prayer Come Holy Spirit, for five of our friends. Ask them to think what that would mean for each of the friends they have thought of. Explain to the young people that along the length of the shoelace, they need to tie 5 separate knots and as they do so, decide upon the names of five friends that they want to pray for. Create a quiet space where young people can pray for their five friends as they tie the knots. Encourage them to take the shoelaces away and display them somewhere that will remind them to pray for their five friends every day, simply praying Come Holy Spirit, over each of them. If this is quite a new idea for your young people, model how to do this initially. Try to create an opportunity in the coming weeks where young people can share their stories of the way they have seen God answering this prayer in the lives of their friends. The Point: To provide a practical opportunity to pray Come Holy Spirit. Additional Needs: This is a great sensory activity. If a young person struggles to think of five friends, then suggest members of their family, or people they know at church or school.

Shoelaces DURATION: 5 MINS. YOU'RE INVITED ACTIVITY WATCHER RESPONSE Explain to the group that we are going to plan an event together as a response to the prayer Come Holy Spirit; something which we can invite our friends to where we can share more about Jesus with them. This could be a special event of this particular group, a special church service, a Christian concert or a film night perhaps. The decision as to what event to plan should fall entirely to the young people, supported by the leaders of the group in the planning process. (Balance creativity with practicality eg. it might be easier to organise a themed group meeting in place of one of your usual meetings. Energize has lots of suggestions for these in our Just For Fun series and you may want to share some of these with your group if they are struggling for inspiration). The event you plan should be suitable to invite non-christian friends to, perhaps those five friends identified in the praying for 5 friends exercise and provide an opportunity for those people to discover more of who Jesus is and what He has done for them. Guide the group to think about how this can be done sensitively and respectfully of those people, but also challenge them to act with confidence, remembering that the Holy Spirit will work in them to, as they step out in faith to do this. Provide a wide selection of craft materials for the young people to use to create invitations for the event they plan, which they can give to their friends in the coming week. Work to support the young people to take the practical steps they need to carry out in order to ensure that their event comes together as planned. Throughout the time leading up to this event, remind your young people to pray together regularly, remembering to pray; Come, Holy Spirit. The Point: To provide a practical opportunity to pray and respond to the prayer, Come, Holy Spirit. Additional Needs: Provide some guidance about how the event should be inclusive for all, making sure everyone is able to contribute ideas. Some young people may need to reflect on what the event might look like for a while, so make sure you give everyone time. Maybe have a refreshment break and then come back to see what other ideas the young people have come up with. Think about how to make the event accessible, so if there are loud parts for example, how can you help young people who struggle with loud noise to cope? Selection of cards, papers, envelopes, stickers, pens and other craft materials DURATION: 30 MINS.

INVITATIONS ACTIVITY WATCHER TAKE AWAY Challenge the group to consider one of the following challenges in the week ahead: Ask a Christian you know to tell you more about what they have seen the Holy Spirit do in their life. Pray Come, Holy Spirit, for yourself, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus truths to you. Pray Come Holy Spirit, for your friends, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus to them, and ask Him to give you confidence to share Jesus with them. Invite a friend to your group or a suitable event. This might be a normal meeting or a special meeting or even a Christian camp or holiday. (Urban Saints have lots of camps your young people and their friends can engage with Additional Needs: It may be helpful to explain to a parent/carer what the Take Away for this session are, so that they can remind and support young people to do them. Discuss with them any adaptations to the Take Away that may be necessary so that young people can succeed.
