Pastor s Message Dear Friends in Christ, Bless our God, you peoples; let the sound of praise be heard. Psalm 66:8 In 1997 the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America signed a full communion document with three mainline denominations including the Presbyterian Church USA. This means Lutherans believe that the Presbyterian Church and the other two churches (Reformed Church in America, United Church of Christ) preach the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, with integrity, that we encourage members to share Holy Communion with each other, that we recognize and can share pastors between denominations, and that we are committed to working together with these other Christians to understand each other better and to work together and to foster love and respect. Since the time of the Reformation, churches and denominations have often identified themselves by their differences rather than what they have in common. Maybe some of you remember longago being in Lutheran churches where other churches were criticized. Not just the Roman Catholic Church, but the Methodist and Presbyterian churches made their way into sermons about what to avoid. Nowadays we recognize that we have far more in common with other churches than differences, and that we can strengthen the body of Christ by working together with other Christians, nearby. Not only do we share full communion agreements with those churches listed above, but we also share the same partnerships with the United Methodist Church, Moravian Church, and Episcopal Church. -Continued on next page -4-

Pastor's Message continued We ve already started to build a relationship with our very close neighbor, Oak Hills Presbyterian Church. We share Thanksgiving worship with them and several other area churches. We have a partnership with them with the food pantry. They regularly donate food and volunteers for King s Cupboard. Now we d like to get to know our neighbors even better. We are planning a joint worship service and picnic and I hope you ll all come: Sunday July 18 at 10:30 am at Oak Hills Presbyterian (just up the hill from KOK) Ice Cream & Dessert Social following Since neither sanctuary can accommodate everyone, we decided to meet outdoors for worship, so pray for good weather, bring your sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen, and come prepared to worship God with our neighbors. One thing that struck me from Sara Miles, author of Take This Bread, who spoke at our Oregon Synod Assembly, was her attitude toward the stranger. So many times we want strangers and visitors to join with us and be just like us. But Sara reminds us that the stranger is Jesus, who comes into our midst not to let us be comfortable and do things the way we always have, but to transform us. When we meet the stranger, we will be changed, and that s a good thing. Some come and experience something a little different. Come to experience Jesus in the stranger. And come to be changed, to know God a little more deeply and to grow in faith. Pastor Aimee -5-

K i n g o f K i n g s R e a c h e s O u t KING S CUPBOARD The Remodel The pantry and adjoining nursery are undergoing final touches to complete their minor remodel and facilitate the new-and-improved client flow on pantry distribution day. The doorway between the pantry and nursery has been enlarged and a new door installed. The pantry sports a new tile floor; the nursery s tile area has been resurfaced and sealed. Both rooms have been painted. Shelves (including additional units) are being installed in the pantry, and some extra wooden units are being repurposed for the nursery. Pantry shelves will soon be restocked with food in preparation for upcoming service days. We want to thank volunteers from all over the community for lending helping hands to make this remodel a reality. We ve had remodel helpers from King of Kings, Creator, Oak Hills, Providence and the community. We offer deepest gratitude to partner congregations and community volunteers for their faithful support of regular pantry operations. New Service Hours In early June pantry volunteers were invited to a meeting to discuss pantry service hours. The meeting was well attended, including representatives from partner congregations and the community. We wanted to assess whether the current service hours (3 5 p.m.) were adequate to meet the needs of hungry neighbors. The group decided to extend the hours on distribution day to serve from 3 6 p.m., hoping the extra hour will help provide pantry access to families dealing with after school transportation and those who work until 5 p.m. We do not expect a dramatic increase in clients and have sufficient capacity to handle current and projected service needs. -11-

K i n g o f K i n g s R e a c h e s O u t KING S CUPBOARD continued Pantry Service Statistics - January to June 2010 The poor economy and severe unemployment reports explain the strong local demand for emergency food. A recent Associated Press news article, Oregon Food Stamp Enrollment Spikes provides this information: Demand for food stamps is up in Oregon, and is expected to keep increasing More than 700,000 Oregonians received food stamps in May, a 17% increase from 2009 Oregon s food stamp numbers have increased 46% since July 2008 Another program, TANF, (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) has increased 35% since July 2008 From January to June 2010, King s Cupboard has: Served 565 families, including 1903 people Received approximately 34,170 pounds of food from Oregon Food Bank, Safeway, partner congregations and food drives Purchased $5,685 of food Performed its work with an estimated 1800 volunteer hours How You Can Help The pantry s ongoing needs include food, funds and volunteers. We thank you for your faithful giving and participation in so many ways. We are currently experiencing a temporary but significant shortage of peanut butter from Oregon Food Bank. A jar or two, any size, any kind is most welcome. Other welcome products include cereal, juice (in bottles or cans), toilet paper, paper towels and laundry detergent. -12-

K i n g o f K i n g s R e a c h e s O u t KING S CUPBOARD continued Our most urgent volunteer needs include: Shoppers to purchase pantry items not available from Oregon Food Bank. This is done between distributions. Shoppers receive a shopping list, suggested sources and price ranges and purchases are promptly reimbursed. Drivers to pick up donated product and deliver to KOK. We need to explore specific opportunities to receive free (or almost free) perishable product for distribution day. Some pickups can be accomplished with a car, some would be best with an SUV, van or small truck. Pantry volunteers may help regularly, occasionally or be on call. For more specific details on volunteer needs and opportunities or other pantry issues -- please contact Charlotte Cunningham or Debbi Estes. Creator and KOK Join Together To Volunteer at Oregon Food Bank Saturday, July 31, 9 a.m. - noon Members of Creator Lutheran and King of Kings will join together to volunteer at Oregon Food Bank's Volunteer Action Center on Saturday, July 31 from 9 a.m. to noon. Oregon Food Bank is located on NE 33rd Avenue, North of Columbia Blvd., Portland. Children ages 6 and up are welcome, accompanied by an adult. We may repack and label bulk quantities of dry food, such as rice, pasta, apples or potatoes, into family-sized packages or we may sort and inspect donated food. These are products that find their way to King's Cupboard and are ultimately distributed to hungry neighbors from our pantry. A tour of the Oregon Food Bank facility is likely. -Continued on next page -13-

K i n g o f K i n g s R e a c h e s O u t Give a little time and learn more about the work Oregon Food Bank does to support pantries like King's Cupboard. For more details, and to sign up as a volunteer, contact Debbi Estes ( , estes@steveestes.com) or David Biggam (Creator Lutheran at , dblmt@aol.com). Carpooling is suggested; let us know if you'd like to share a ride. Project Start Right For the fifth year King of Kings has been asked to participate in this project sponsored by Love, INC of Clackamas County and the Oregon Department of Human Services. School supplies for Clackamas County children in need. Do you remember how exciting it was when you went to buy your supplies for the coming year? You lined them up. You checked your list. You filled your special new backpack For many children in Clackamas County back-to-school is not a happy time. Their families cannot afford the supplies they need. Children are ashamed that they are the only ones without supplies. They want to be just like the other kids. Donations of supplies and money from individuals, churches, businesses, and service clubs from all over Clackamas County turn into a huge mountain of crayons, markers, paper, pencils and the like, to be packed in new backpacks for distribution in late August. Recipients generally children in foster care and low-income families are qualified and referred to the program by caseworkers. Last year 1,000 children were served by Project Start Right. Please HELP children to START RIGHT this school year. Cash contributions are tax deductible and receipts will be provided on request. Make checks payable to Start Right and mail to: Start Right PO 952 Oregon City, OR

K i n g o f K i n g s R e a c h e s O u t Project Start Right Supply List (In priority order) Calculators 3-ring binders Watercolor sets Backpacks Notebook paper Felt markers Pencil boxes Scissors Pocket folders Spiral notebooks Math sets Colored pencils (Single subject) (Protractor & compass) Rulers Erasers White glue Glue Sticks Ballpoint pens #2 pencils We need to complete our collection by August 13. Place donated supplies in the marked basket in the Fellowship Hall. Metropolitan Alliance for the Common Good: Clackamas County Cluster Now that King of Kings is an observing member of MACG again, we have access to free leadership training. This training helps us learn how to build relationships with others in our community, tell our story, and use the strengths God has given us to make a difference in our neighborhood. Please save the dates of two Saturdays: September 25 and October 2 for 12 hours of training right here in our county. If you have already had the training and would like to be a reflection group leader, please let Pastor Aimee know. The Domestic Violence Survivor s House is set to open this month. It has been a long road, starting with conversations we had at King of Kings and St. Stephen about the pressures in our lives. Violence surfaced as a major concern at that time. -Continued next page -15-

K i n g o f K i n g s R e a c h e s O u t M A C G People were affected by news coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as being fearful of violence closer to home. A group of Clackamas County folks got together and focused on domestic violence after a number of high-profile cases in our county including one in which a husband shot his wife on the steps of the West Linn Police Station as she sought help. A number of gifts and grants have provided us with sufficient funds to open two houses in our county. The first house is here in Milwaukie, near Christ the King Catholic Church. It is two-story, with the dining and living area upstairs, and six bedrooms downstairs. A woman who owns an Oxford House for people recovering from drug addiction was interested in owning a Survivor s House. She has purchased the house for this purpose and we are in the process of remodeling the double-car garage to include three more bedrooms. Several of you have donated items, furniture and household supplies Thank You! More is still needed. Please contact Pastor Aimee if you have something to donate and she ll give you the procedure for finding out if it is still needed and having it picked up. If we collect more than we need for this house, some items can go to furnish the next house. King s Cupboard is in desperate need of plastic grocery & produce bags! -16-

Bobby, We Caught You!!! When no one else is around Bobby Cunningham works behind the scenes doing all manner of things around the church. He delivers pantry supplies, helps set up & arranges pantry offerings, he cleans, sorts & disposes of pantry refuse. And then he usually vacuums and cleans the pantry after service days. He raked the entire KOK property after he felt the landscape people didn t leave it looking nice enough. He has trimmed, pruned and shaped most, if not all the shrubs & bushes on the place, pulled weeds and hauled away yards of yard debris. What a guy! Thank you Bobby! USED CAR NEEDED Greg & Paula Bergeron are looking for an inexpensive car for around $1, Not picky. If you have one for sale or any ideas to help find one please call them at

Stewardship Pronunciation: stü-ərd-ship Function: noun Definition: the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially: the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care i.e. stewardship of our natural resources. F a l l S t e w a r d s h i p P r o g r a m Before you know it summer (??) will be over and we will be headed into fall and our Fall Stewardship program. Each year we journey together to discover more about being good stewards of what we have been given. This year s theme is Give as Jesus has Given. Commitment Sunday is October 10. For several Sundays prior to this we will focus on life experiences of members as they relate to stewardship. Commitment Sunday will include a meal after church and a schedule that will include participatory activities, perhaps a listening event. At the conclusion off all events our Estimate of Giving cards will be placed on the altar. We will again celebrate all that we have been given as we give back. Beehive This modern symbol represents the church and its many, varied workers. A multitude of people, each with different tasks and gifts, works to build up the body of Christ. Often, nine bees are pictured near the hive to represent the nine fruits of the Spirit (see Galatians 5:22-23*). *By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. -20-
