1 A u g u s t King of Kings Lutheran Church Centered in Christ, we love all, welcome all, and pursue justice and peace SE THIESSEN ROAD, MILWAUKIE, OR ~ P a s t o r s M e s s a g e Praise the LORD, from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps; fire and hail, snow and fog, tempestuous wind, doing God s will; mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars; wild beasts and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds; sovereigns of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the world; young men and maidens, old and young together. Psalm 148: Reasons why you should come to the outdoor worship service August 13 at 11 am at Milo McIver Park 1. Get a front-row seat to the beauty of God s good Creation 2. Challenge yourself to try something out of your comfort zone and experience God s presence in an unexpected way 3. This is an opportunity to invite friends who aren t comfortable in a traditional church setting 4. Learn from the trees, birds, and rivers, how to praise our God 5. Help fulfill one of our Council goals, for the congregation to be visible in the community 6. Jesus said to go out to the world to tell the good news 7. You asked for young families and you got them. This is what they like to do! 8. Being outdoors is good for our physical and mental health 9. Good food and friends 10. To laugh at the pastor looking and sounding foolish trying to preach and preside in conditions she couldn t possibly prepare for Peace, Pr. 2 V i t a l i t y S u r v e y All congregations have been invited to take The Vitality Survey, a tool that has been very helpful in identifying strengths and helping congregations remain vital in their communities. The Oregon Synod Congregations are all encouraged to take it for our own information, but also in preparation for the Bishop s election at our Synod Assembly in The Vitality Survey takes minutes to complete. Here is the link to the survey online, if that is convenient for you: Those who haven t completed it online are invited to take the survey during worship on August 20 or after worship on August 27. Once we have completed it, we should get our results back in a couple of weeks. Your council will let you know our findings and recommendations in September or October. 3 T h a n k Y o u! Bible School this year was so much fun! 13 kids, all from our own congregation, learned about Noah, Jonah, and Jesus walking on water. They played, and created works of art, sang, ate, danced, and read from the Bible. Our cooks provided a delicious meal! Several of you brought food for the kids. They really had a good time. Thank you to Kerin Lommen, Margaret Noble, Jeanie DuPere, Kevin and Sylvia Hornych, Harry and Sharon Konsa, Bonnie Cowden, Marjie Brock, Gary Bergeron, Kathy Pearsall, Sue Trotter, Krist Sandness, Susan Carder, Ellen Burns, and Penny Charman for all your work making this a special year. PICNIC FOR THE PANTRY BENEFIT FOR KING S CUPBOARD 4-7PM SEPT Cancelled ~ Stay tuned for 2018 We are looking for helpful hands for next year s event. Get on the list now to share your ideas and interest. Join us for a planning meeting September 6pm Wednesday Morning Bible Study Returns August 2 After taking July off, we are ready to return to reading and studying the Bible. We left off reading the book of Numbers. The Hebrew Bible calls this book, In the Desert, which is closer to the main theme. We will continue beginning with chapter 18. On average, we will read 3-5 chapters a week. We will post the readings ahead so that you can follow along on your own even if you can t join the Wednesday Morning Bible study group. We will read the Bible together at Bible study and discuss what it means to us and how we apply the lessons in our daily life. Even if you can t attend every week, you could certainly jump in any time to study a particular book that you especially enjoy or one you especially struggle with.

5 M e m b e r s o f t h e M o n t h Tom & Lisa Hiller When did you become a member of King of Kings? Lisa - Approximately years ago. Tom - 10 or 11 years ago and then again in Why do you like being a member? OR what would you say to someone who is looking at our church? Lisa - I like the size of the congregation. For most of my adult life, I've been in small churches and when Tom became an Interim Pastor, I thought, great, now I can join a large church, which I did for about 4-5 years. I realized I missed the intimacy of a smaller congregation and sought out KOK. Plus, it's my neighborhood church! Of course, I enjoy the folks who attend as well. Tom - I like a small congregation also. But that doesn't mean it has to stay that way! I also like that it is in our neighborhood and that when I joined I already knew a lot of people! What church activities do you participate in Lisa - Worship, Radical Hospitality, Spirits & Theology, Mutual Ministry. Tom - Worship, Food Bank, Spirits & Theology, Men's Breakfast, and Adult Forum leadership. Tell a little of your family and what you like to do for fun. We are the parents of two grown children; Alex Hiller, who is married to Grace Deason and they live with our very special granddaughter, Rose, in La Crosse, WI; and Victoria Hiller, who lives in Portland and works for Multnomah County. Lisa - I work at Holtey Law in Portland and hope to retire at the end of I love my job but am ready for the next chapter of my life. I love to read and recently rediscovered my love of sewing. Not long ago I took piano lessons, but the thought of playing for anyone terrifies me! Tom and I love road trips, both near and far. I especially love to head out towards Silverton, sit on the deck of the local pub and have a beer. Tom - I am a retired Lutheran pastor. I like to read theology, history, and chase trains. I'm also trying to restart my stamp collecting. What other things would we like to know about you and your family? Tom and I are committed to justice issues and have been involved on and off in a peace potluck group for almost 30 years.
6 A b u n d a n t G r a c e T h e S t e w a r d s h i p A c t i o n C o m m i t t e e The SAC theme for 2017 is Abundant Grace. When we look around, God s abundant grace is everywhere. From the very earth that we live on, to friends and family, to our church community to life itself, both now and forever. God has lavishly provided for us. What do we have to do to receive this abundant grace? Nothing, simply believe! So then, how should we live our lives in response to this abundant grace? Specifically, what is our relationship with money, and the things it can buy? Most of us are blessed with things. We don t often think of ourselves as being rich. However, Sandy and I recently returned from a bucket list vacation, some of which was spent in Cambodia, where the average income is $500 per year. Only 30% of the people have electricity, and the water is not safe to drink. In comparison, we are very rich indeed! However, despite this wealth, most of us don t have any cash leftover at the end of the month. We tend to spend our income as we receive it. (Sometimes we spend more than we receive, using credit cards.) This makes it so important to remember that stewardship is an all year thing, not just something we think about each fall as KOK plans for the coming year. It needs to be part of all our financial decisions. When we consider making a discretionary purchase such as a big screen TV, deluxe cable or satellite package, or the latest smart phone, or (you fill in the blank), we need to consider if or how this affects our ability to support the ministry of King of Kings. It is important to think about our priorities as we spend our wealth. Years ago, there was a local savings & loan company with the motto Pay yourself first, meaning that saving some money should be our priority, before paying bills. I have a suggested change: Pay your church first. A less attention-grabbing way to say this is to call it first fruits giving. God s saving grace has forgiven our sins and given us the ability to transform our lives, both now and in the life to come. God s grace is abundant indeed! May God s peace be with you, Greg Peterson
7 Dearest King of Kings Family: My brothers, our families, and I extend our deepest gratitude for your love, friendship, support, and hospitality. You helped and watched over us as we grew up, and now have held us in our grief. It was so wonderful to share the celebration of Peggy s life with you. You are all forever in our thoughts, prayers, and hearts. Blessings, Curt Rodin Prayers & Thanksgivings...
