Walking with the Miles Weekend Few families in Arkansas have had greater impact on Methodism than the Miles family. With almost a half-century of dedicated service to the church, John Miles retired from the pulpit of the largest UMC congregation in Arkansas twenty years ago and at that time, two of his children had already been serving the church in pastoral leadership for more than a decade! Rev. John P. Miles, II is presently serving as senior pastor at Jonesboro First United Methodist Church here in Arkansas and Rev. Dr. Rebekah Miles is the Professor of Ethics and Practical Theology and Director, Graduate Program in Religious Studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. The Miles family grew up in Hot Springs and call First United Methodist home. The Invitational Evangelism Committee invites you to a 2-day event in early October called Walking With the Miles: A Family Affair. The festivities begin on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 5:00 pm. The weekend continues the next day on Sunday, October 4, when all three pastors will be in leadership in all three worship services. Rev. Beka Miles will be our guest preacher at the traditional services in the historic sanctuary at 8:15 and 10:45 am. Rev. John Miles will be our guest preacher at the Connexion service at 10:45 in the CLC. The day will conclude with a Roast and Toast of Rev. John Miles at 5:00 pm with dinner. 4 Music Ministry TIMOTHY TUCKER Calling All Singers! Music has always been a vital part of Methodism starting with John and Charles Wesley. In the past few weeks, I have heard some marvelous singing from the congregations in both traditional services. So if you have the desire, why not move up to the choir loft and join us in praising God through song? It doesn t matter which service you attend, we can use more singers. If you are interested, please Tim Tucker at ttucker329@att.net. Calling All Ringers! It is time to dust off the bells and get to ringing for God again! If you are interested in joining the bell choir ministry, we will be having an interest meeting on Wednesday, September 2, at 5:30, in the Choir Room. I hope to see many of you. If you cannot make the meeting but you are interested, please send an to ttucker329@att.net. New Fall Studies REV. TERESA HOLT To register online go to click adults then small group Bible studies. For questions or more information, contact Teresa Holt, at , ext. 116 or tholt@fumchs.com. Come join us on Sunday mornings for a six week Simple Study about the Bible - no expectations or Bible knowledge required. Animate- Bible is a refreshing new take on what the Bible is, how it came to be, and how we read it today. The small group will meet for seven weeks including a get to know you brunch starting Sunday, September 13, 9:30 a.m., in Christian Life Center. Nothing required but to show up! Allen Bedell and Candy Poirier, Facilitators. Covenant is an in-depth group Bible Study that centers on our relationships with God, with each other, and with the world. It differs from other Bible studies in that it emphasizes the biblical concept of Covenant the enduring commitment between God and people as a unifying pattern throughout the entire Bible. It underscores the unique relationship that God chooses with us as God s people. The 24-week study covers the whole Bible by moving between the Old and New Testaments discussing books from each in a way that shows the interconnectedness of scripture as a whole. Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. September 9th, Orientation, CLC 201. Other days and times are possible, just let us know if you are interested! Teresa Holt or Ted DeWeese facilitator. Spiritual Direction Groups are an opportunity to practice and grow deeper in your relationship with God through a very small group with personal sharing and individual and corporate practice. Quiet prayer and ancient practices will be the focus of the first 7 weeks, and the last 10 weeks will focus on daily discerning God s direction for your life. The groups are limited to 6-8 participants per group. Alternative times and groups may be considered if desired. Women: Mondays 1st Session Sept 14 Oct 26 and 2nd Session Jan 4 March 7, 10:00 11:00 a.m., OR Wednesdays, 1st Session Sept 9 Oct 2 and 2nd Session Jan 6 March 9, 11:45 12:45 p.m., CLC 204. A MEN S GROUP HAS JUST BEEN ADDED: Sundays, September 13 October 25, 5:30 6:30 p.m., CLC 204. Steve Burns, Facilitator. In this study on the biblical roles and responsibilities of a man, Dr. James Dobson shares timeless wisdom you can use as a husband and father. A deeper understanding of God s perspective on manhood will help you provide stability and leadership in your home. Sundays, November 14, 23rd, December 5th, 12th, 6:00 p.m., CLC 215. Susan Bean, Facilitator. Everyone has unique goodbyes times of losing someone or something that has given life meaning and value. This study gives wisdom through these experiences of leaving behind and moving on and the spirituality of change. Joyce Rudd, the author, says that We may be harshly bruised by life s farewells, but it is possible to be healed. We can become whole again. I believe that if we are willing to move inside the heart of the experience, to live patiently through the process even as we acknowledge the difficult, painful emotions, we can experience the wonder of spiritual growth and the marvel of the new depths of faith in our relationship with God and with each other. Wednesdays, October 7-28, 5:30 6:30 p.m., CLC 201. Kate Shaffer and Carolyn Elias, Facilitators. Are you yearning for a deeper more committed walk with Jesus? Would you like to grow in your faith in a way that includes both grace and holy living? John Wesley lived nearly 300 years ago, but the Christianity he taught and practiced still captures our hearts and imaginations in the 21st century. Edgy, challenging, revolutionary, and rewarding, Wesleyan Christianity rings true to modern ears. It s a faith that makes a difference. 8 First United Methodist Church 1100 Central Avenue Hot Springs, AR We are a community of faith, connecting people to God, to each other, and to the world. A Centennial Success First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs made history on Sunday, August 9 as we celebrated 100 years of worship in our historic sanctuary on the corner of Central Avenue and Orange Street. The special unity service drew 609 congregants with beautiful music from our choir led by new Music Director Timothy Tucker and a rousing rendition of Amazing Grace with a bagpiper and Mike Lovelady on drums. After the service, the congregation strolled through the front doors of the sanctuary which haven t been regularly used in decades. Mike Lovelady and his boistourous group of musicians led the way down the Central Avenue sidewalk through the center of the former Howard Johnson property that was just added to our campus. The Christian Life Center atrium was filled with a timeline and scrapbooks of our church s history. Members also had the chance to purchase special Centennial notecards with a drawing of the church on the front. We sold out! In Cupp Hall, members enjoyed a delicious boxed lunch from Special Touches Catering while everything from watermelons to Razorback football tickets were raffled off. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Centennial Sunday and to all the members who came to celebrate with us! ONNECT WITH US (501) (phone) (501) (fax)
