2 Invite Everyone - Jesus Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet. Matthew 22:9 What a wonderful feeling it is to be invited to something special! Last year, Faith UMC s Communications Director, Jennie Ford, invited the staff to her wedding officiated by Pastor Cara. The wedding was beautiful and the reception was incredible. Everyone danced, laughed, enjoyed delicious food, posed for fun group pictures and more. In Matthew s gospel, Jesus tells a parable about a king who throws a huge wedding banquet for his son. Formal invitations were sent out and then when everything was prepared, the king sent his slaves out to call on those who had been invited. Surprisingly, all who were invited made light of the invitation and busied themselves with other activities. So, the king then decided to invite everyone whosoever will come, come to the royal wedding banquet! Both good and bad the text says, come! And the wedding hall was filled with guests. In fact, throughout the gospels, Jesus invites. He invites fishermen and tax collectors to follow him and they do. He invites Zacchaeus to come down from a tree that the two of them might share dinner together. Zacchaeus comes down, they eat dinner at his house, and Zacchaeus is changed forever! Jesus invites a man blind from birth to go wash in the pool Siloam. The man does and his sight is restored. On the first Easter Sunday, the resurrected Jesus invites Mary to go tell the disciples. She does and the world is changed forever! Over and over again, Jesus invites people to go, come and follow and when they do, amazing things happen. But, Jesus does not force anyone to accept his invitations. Once a rich young man came to Jesus asking about eternal life. After a brief conversation, Jesus answered with an invitation Go, sell your possessions, give to the poor, then follow me. The text says the man went away grieving. I wonder what might have happened if the man had accepted Jesus invitation. I like to think that later, maybe he did. After all, a few verses later, Jesus says, for God, all things are possible. At Faith UMC, we follow Jesus example of invitational ministry. Cara and I, our staff, lay leadership, and church members work together to plan and organize worship, Bible studies, small groups, ministry events and mission opportunities. Everyone is invited to pray, worship, serve, give, lead and share in the abundance of God s kingdom. Jesus extends the invitation to all of us. You are invited. All are invited. And, when we accept Jesus invitation, we are changed for the better and so is the world! As we begin this new fall season of ministry, I invite you to renew your commitment and covenant to worship regularly and to support the ministries of the church with your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. One of the best ways to witness is simply to invite others friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, even enemies invite everyone! With gratitude, Pastor Steve

9 Children and Families Faith Formation and Discipleship: Children s Sunday School 9:45 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings Fall Sunday School Begins September 2 Deep Blue At Home with God - New this Fall! Based on the award-winning Deep Blue Kids Bible, this awe-inspiring resource for children includes adventure, exciting stories, science experiments, arts and crafts, animated story-telling, and active games all combined into a faith experience that helps children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today and find out what it means to be part of God s family. Weekly Family Devotions available at the Children s Welcome Station Try this Family Devotion based on John 5:1-17 with your family! CREATE TOGETHER Supplies: nail polish in two colors (not quick-dry), a white or light-colored mug, a disposable container wide enough to insert the mug into, water, toothpicks, paper towel TIP: Thrift stores are a great place to pick up mugs or similar ceramic items. To see an example of how this process works, search youtube.com for videos of nail polish marbling. Use a well-ventilated area. SAY: The pool where the sick man was lying was actually a whirlpool. When the water swirled, he would try to get in so it would make him feel better, but he could never get in in time. He was surprised when Jesus came and healed him after he d been waiting so long! Today, we ll make our own whirlpool mugs so we can remember this story whenever we use them. Listen to all of the directions before we start. Pour very warm water into the container. Pour drops of the nail polish into the water and use a toothpick to swirl the colors around. The polish will dry very quickly on top of the water. Cover most of the water s surface with a thin layer of marbled polish. Dip the bottom third of your mug into the water and hold it there for a few seconds. The polish should adhere to the mug. Remove the mug from the water and turn it upside down to dry. PRAY: Healing God, thank you for sending us Jesus to heal people s bodies and souls even when they don t expect it. Amen. Opportunities to Serve Sunday mornings at 9:45 and 11:00. Share the love of Christ with children by serving in our Sunday School as a teacher or helper. Training and materials are provided. Contact: Kathy Schmucker for more information. Spiritual Formation Resources: Employment Opportunity Paid Part-time Child Care Providers Needed for Faith Church Faith UMC is hiring additional childcare providers to meet our growing needs for childcare. We are looking for a few individuals who would be available to work flexible hours on an as-needed basis. Please prayerfully consider someone you might know who is a high school graduate with a heart for sharing Jesus love with children and who might benefit from some extra income working flexible hours on an as-needed basis. For an application, kschmucker@faithumchurch.org.
