Support the Bridge Building Mission- LOVE We Love People, our Community and God Belong, Believe, Become. This is the vision of our church. It represents a new way of being the church in the midst of today s culture and our community. By emphasizing belonging before believing, people are encouraged to get involved in our community of faith while they check this Christianity thing out. It also encourages the fostering of relationships and demonstrates to pre-christians that people are more interested in them as people than in what they currently believe or how they are currently living. This is not a new vision, but rather a reaffirmation of the mindset of the early church one that was used in the early centuries of the church to reach the Christ-less world around them. God has placed Kent Naz within such a community as this and for such a time as this. He desires us to be a kingdom outpost of healing and hope and wholeness. We exist, not to cater to our own wants and needs but to the needs of others, especially those who do not yet know Christ. Our purpose is not to multiply members but disciples who function as missionaries, carrying the good news of Jesus to every corner of our community. We are a family of people from different ethnicities, generations, and religious backgrounds, who are committed to Christ and to serving our community. It is all about the journey the process of growing into fully devoted followers of Jesus. And it s about coming together in order to care for the poor, the hurting, the lonely, and the disenfranchised. When he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them. Matthew 9:36 Kent Nazarene Fiscal Year End February 2013 Special points of interest: Belong I really do see you! I can identify with you Believe meeting Jesus is an intentional effort to introduce others to the saving work of Christ Become The process of training and discipling that enables believers to understand the need and plan for reproducing their faith in others Inside this issue: Sunday School & Discipleship Ministries International (SDMI) Missions 2 God is not willing that any should parish 2 Peter 3:9 During the past year, Kent Nazarene developed an SDMI program whose mission is to develop a People of prayer engaged in the Word making Christ like Disciples. Our SDMI chairperson is Sherrie Pantle. The SDMI committee members include our staff, a board member and five Sunday school teachers. The role of the SDMI council is to oversee all aspects of Sunday School, curriculum, teacher development and assignments. The council submits monthly reports to our church Board and the District SDMI Chair. The Church of the Nazarene developed SDMI with the purpose of intentionally developing relationships with unreached people until they are Christ like disciples making Christ like Disciples. We teach the Word of God until children, youth and adults are saved, sanctified wholly, and maturing in the Christian experience. By involving Christians in evangelism, education and disciple making we help them grow spiritually. Kent Community 2 Income Stmt 3 Kent Naz Kidz 4 Music 4 Youth, Other Ministries 5 Pastor s Article 6

Kent Nazarene Page 3 A year at Kent Naz The past Fiscal Year was one of growth and change for Kent Nazarene. We started the year by hiring Rev. Ev Tustin as our Senior Pastor. Thus we embarked on a journey that is still unfolding. Our new Music and Arts Director, Brian Fentress, taught us how to worship in freedom and exuberance. The congregation was able to share their musical talents during a weekend workshop and several talent nights. The year was capped with an outstanding Easter music presentation. We were also blessed with a new Youth Ministries couple Josh and Paige Stines. This young couple brings with them missional experience and a love for our youth and their families. The youth have been meeting in church homes each month and are raising funds for Teen Summer Camps. The Children s Department is being lovingly led by Linda Pasquale and a host of workers who care for the spiritual education of our children. The group hosted a pizza lunch and a wonderful Easter egg hunt event. Plans are underway for Vacation Bible School coming soon. Getting Ready for Company Raised: Expended: $23, Foyer $18, Grounds $ Office $24, Children s Wing $3, Please express your appreciation to our staff along with encouragement and prayer.
Page 4 Belong * Believe * Become Kent Naz Kidz children s Ministries The mission for Children s Ministries is based on the lives of children being impacted most effectively by a holistic approach: Mentally through education Physically for basic n e ed s S p i r i tu a l l y through evangelism to reach children for Christ, and Socially through discipleship to strengthen their faith. The Saturday before Easter, children ages 2 to 5th grade participated in an Easter Egg Hunt Eggs-travaganza that included carnival games, relay races, face painting, crafts and an Easter Egg Hunt. It was great to see the help from Josh and the teen department as well as staff. It takes a village and it is fun! July was Vacation Bible School (VBS) week where children got hands-on experiences learning abut God and His Word through music, crafts, missions, bible Adventures and using imagination. Planned for the fall is Harvest Party the Saturday before Halloween. There will be games, prizes, fall crafts, popcorn, cakewalk and so much more. Thank you to the army of helpers who make the Children s Department such a vital part of Kent Naz!. Music and more. When we called Brian Fentress to be our Music and Arts director, Kent Naz embarked on a truly wonderful worship experience. We learned how to participate in the music celebration with clapping, jumping, shouting, praising and endless ways of expressing our love for God and all he has done for us. The community choir event launched a catalog of music numbers that kept us going from fall through spring. We saw faces in the choir that usually are in the congregation which was so fun! We continue to enjoy the music brought to us by Dave Irish and our wonderful worship band. We are thankful for Kristen Schneider for bringing the orchestra new life. If you have a music interest, please feel free to join in a place that expresses your talents. Getting Ready for Company T h e v i s i o n f o r freshening our building and grounds started with Pastor Mark and was implemented by Pastor Ev and Rhonda. Thanks to the committees who did the planning and presentation to the congregation as well as to all the workers who pitched in over many Saturdays. The foyer has a completely new look and has turned into a welcoming gathering place. The Coffee Kart corner is so much fun and the pebble counter is a nice touch. The nursery is secure with a check in counter and windows. The children s area downstairs has been consolidated into one section with a central check in as well.
Kent Nazarene Page 5 Inside Story Headline Josh and Paige have certainly hit the ground running with our teen group. Having just arrived at Kent Naz, they participated in a Youth New Year s Blast, have you tried to fill a cup with water while holding your right foot with your right hand? Youth Fellowship Nights have been fun times for youth to get to know families. On the first Sunday of each month, a family opens up their home for a time of fellowship and snacks. The Youth held a Super Bowl XLVII Potluck Party and watched the 47th Super Bowl together. They enjoyed a time where friends could share in the fun and they dressed in support of their favorite team! This summer also promises a lot of fun and work too as kids have been earning money to go to teen camp. Ask them what they have been doing and hear about the fun and many things they have been learning. Car washing has never been the same : ) In addition to the relationship building, the teens and their teachers/workers have also been spending time in the Word to strengthen their relationship with the Lord. There were several teens recently baptized with Josh doing the honors. Ready for Camp Belong Believe Become How does Kent Naz implement the mission of welcoming those whom Jesus would bring into our midst? One of the ways is to provide activities that focus on relationship development in a neutral environment. Ignite the Light weekend provided a time for us to grow as a church, to share testimonies and remember just how faithful God is in actively drawing people to him. Kent Naz also held a Chili Cook-Off and Hymn Sing where folks gathered and enjoyed all kinds of Chili along a chance to vote on the most tasty ones. Family Outing! There were over 100 in attendance in our first All Church Skate event. People from all age groups came and had a great evening at the Auburn Skate connection. And did you know just how many people at Kent Naz can play the piano? Simply amazing! Women s ministry has been involved in many activities this year from Healthy Expressions to Women of Faith. of bonding time and affirmation for each woman who attended. Do you know what Farm Chicks is? Ask around and you will find out about the recent excursion to Spokane. and Girls Night Out. These are wonderful times to share a common birth in Christ and choose to be friends. Sisters know each other s stories, celebrate joys, share heartaches and know how to laugh together. Celebrate that we are sisters by our birth in Christ and friends by choice The Restoration Getaway at the Shafer Bailey Mansion was a sold out event with lots Ongoing activities include the F.U.E.L. book club that meets on Thursdays, the Bible Study at Marilyn Berggren s home Thank you to everyone who makes Women s Ministries a great outreach opportunity.
Bridge Building Mission- LOVE Pastor Ev and Rhonda Tustin Kent Nazarene Church Mariner s Faith Night Intercultural and Intergenerational by Pastor Ev I am not someone who likes buzz-words. They can become status symbols or ego-builders at times and because of that, they potentially divide and separate people. However, a friend recently shared a term that I have seen become part of our vision at Kent Naz and I want to pass it on as we look ahead to a new church year. The word is inter-cultural. I like it because it has a different perspective to it than the word multi-cultural. Multi means many or more than one. Our community is indeed multicultural. Our church facility is indeed a multicultural church gathering place. The difference is this: Multicultural churches use the same facility, but seldom interact together. Intercultural churches develop ways for people from varied ethnic backgrounds to connect with each other in worship and shared life experience; celebrating the cultural differences but also celebrating their shared faith in Christ. I cannot express how proud I am of our church. Our multicultural worship experiences have been exciting to see, but our intercultural experiences are going to be the earmark of our future. Visit I also want to pass on a second word which I am not even sure is a word : ) Instead of multi-generational, I am praying that Christ makes us Intergenerational. It s the same concept as intercultural. Let s not just have adults, teens and children in the same room...let s learn from each other! Let s worship with each other and grow together in our experiencing of the relationship with Jesus that he is calling us to. As I said earlier, I am so proud that I see this already happening in many situations throughout the body. It takes effort on everyone s part for this to work out, but I believe it to be worth the effort and a blessing to God. Heaven will be a place where we definitely do not see our differences, but rather we revel in our one-ness in Christ. So, we may as well get started now. I am excited to see how Jesus can bring us a taste of heaven while we are still here. Baptism Service Grace and peace, Pastor Ev Guest Artist Combined Worship with Hispanic congregation Wasn t it fun this year to have two combined services with our Hispanic folks? For the first service, Pastor Gabriel shared a wonderful message while a guest artist painted a portrait depicting the message. The Hispanic worship team participated in the music as well as use of flags and tambourine with colored ribbons. The second service was lead by Pastor Ev who taught about the parable of Jesus healing the blind man with mud and saliva. The picture next to this article shows the guest artiest painting on the concept of people looking like trees, from the blind mans partially healed perspective. We are looking forward to more paintings in the next year!
