2 With Mission All Your Outfitter Heart Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart - Joel 2:12a It seems that God is bent on being in relationship with us. After Adam and Eve disregarded the limits God provided in the garden, they found themselves naked and ashamed. God came, knitted them clothing and restored the relationship. After Cain, consumed with jealousy, killed his brother Abel, he feared for his own life. God came and put a mark on Cain that would protect him. God refused to sever the relationship. When the earth became populated, all humankind abandoned God and turned to evil thoughts continually, it grieved God to God s heart and for a while, God was sorry He even made creation at all. But, still, God did not give up. Through Noah, God made a way and creation was restored. It was again a new beginning. These examples are found in the first eight chapters of Genesis, the first book of the Bible! They set the stage for what we find repeatedly in the remaining 65 books of the Bible (including the small book of Joel!). The message is clear, no matter how far we move away from God, intentionally or unintentionally, God is still with us, ready to restore us into the life-giving relationship God desires for all creation. Sometimes we take this message to mean that we can do whatever we want because God will never turn God s back on us. Yet, countless testimonies in scripture and history tell us that doing whatever we want at best leads to an unfulfilling life and at worst leads to brokenness, destruction, pain, suffering and death. The Good News about Lent is that it is a season of restoration. The word itself means spring from the Latin lencten. Beginning on Ash Wednesday (March 6 for 2019), Lent is a 40-day journey that ends on the Saturday before Easter. Sundays, however, are not counted as Sundays are always a day to celebrate resurrection and new life! The 40 days remind us of the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness fasting and praying and wrestling with temptation. Then, when the 40 days were over, Jesus knew who he was and what he was called to do with the rest of his life. In fact, in Jesus, we see what it looks like when someone gives all their heart to God. With All Your Heart is the theme for this year s Lenten journey. Our ministry teams have planned many opportunities for us to return to God with all our heart. These opportunities are intended not only for Faith UMC, but for the whole community. So, spread the word, invite a friend, post on social media, tell the world the God of Love is ready to restore us to abundant life in God s name. Happy Lent! To learn more about Lent, visit UMC.org On a journey in faith together, Pastor Steve

3 Faithfulness Beyond General Conference In the wake of the decision passed on February 26 at the special General Conference, I have been moved, inspired, and encouraged by the witness of Faith UMC. While many in the congregation are disappointed, hurt, and saddened by the decision, and others are in agreement with the decision, I have seen a continued commitment to being the church that Faith UMC has always been. There are so many things we can celebrate in our mission together even in this time between times. During this uncertain time, I feel called to do my best to lead Faith UMC in a way that affirms and encourages us to continue in the many ministries and goals in which the church can be proud; for us to continue to be a church with many diverse views that appreciates and loves one another; to be a church that: Welcomes all people including LBGTQi+ persons and including persons with very different theological and political viewpoints. Worships together alongside one another knowing our deeply held differences. Reaches out to the community with the Good News of Christ who s life shows us the love of God incarnate. Works side-by-side in the Faith Kitchen ministry feeding the hungry and providing help for the most vulnerable in our communities. Makes important missional decisions together through healthy processes that engage all of us in prayer, holy dialogue, study, reflection and action. Practices good stewardship of all that God has given us directing our resources in the ways we believe will best further God s mission at Faith. Engages in prayer and Bible Study humbly recognizing that all of us have much more to learn in our journey of faith and celebrating that God is not through with us yet! These are indeed trying times. Yet, the gospels and history has shown that God often does God s most amazing, life-changing, world-changing work in the most difficult and painful times. I am hopeful that on the other side of this chapter in the history of the UMC, we will have become a better, stronger, healthier, more inclusive, more welcoming and more missional church that shows the world what God s love can do. I encourage you to join me in this call to prayer and unity with our diversity. To this end, I also encourage you to watch this 2-minute video that celebrates what it means to be a United Methodist (click here) and to attend one of the Post General Conference Gatherings where our Bishop, Tracy Malone will be speaking: Saturday, March 9 10:00 11:30 a.m. Newcomerstown Christ UMC Saturday, March 9 2:00 3:30 p.m. North Canton Faith UMC Sunday, March 10 4:00 5:30 p.m. Strongsville UMC In prayer, mission, and ministry together, Faithfulness Beyond General Conference Pastor Steve

4 Sanctuary Renovations Phase 1 Proposal Approved Note: This rendering does not necessarily reflect the final colors or details. On Tuesday, March 5, the Church Board, with 28 people in attendance, voted unanimously to approve the Sanctuary Renovations Phase 1 proposal. Much thanks and appreciation was expressed to the 20/20 Worship Space Renovations Team and its leader, Debbie Wiley. The meeting included over an hour of discussion that heard and responded to several good questions as well as concerns. The team will be meeting regularly, working closely with the architect over the next five months to keep the project moving toward the goal of starting renovations by early August. Over the next 2 months, the team will be giving special focus to the concerns that have been expressed. Also, to be celebrated is the congregation s generosity reflected in all the second-mile giving to the 20/20 Acting on Faith Initiative. Because of your commitment over the past 3.5 years, we have all the funding necessary to pay for the Phase 1 renovations! For detailed information about the design, timeline and/or finances, please be in touch with Debbie Wiley, Worship Space Renovations Team Leader and Tom Fiala, 20/20 Team Leader. Stewardship Ministry Team Forty Simple Gifts for Lent is a spiritual and missional practice promoted by the Stewardship Ministry Team this year. Lent began on Ash Wednesday, March 6th. Bags are available in the Gathering Area for individuals to place one usable item per day inside on each of the forty days of Lent. The items might include clothing, non-perishable food, even toys. With joy at Easter, donate the bags to the non-profit of your choice. Make room for God in your life, especially during Lent, and experience joy in simplicity and generosity. The Shaker tune Simple Gifts written in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett carries a helpful message: Tis the gift to be simple, tis the gift to be free, Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, Twill be in the valley of love and delight. When true simplicity is gain d, To bow and to bend we shan t be asham d, To turn, turn will be our delight, Till by turning, turning we come out right.

Messy Church is an innovative worship experience where people of all ages engage with the day s Bible story through a variety of hands-on art and creative activities followed by a time of learning and worship and then end our time together with dinner. Join us for the March Messy Church as we explore this month s theme: WHAT IS LENT? How can we draw close to God with all our heart? * Free Dinner What is Lent? Ash Wednesday (March 6) marks the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is the forty day period (not counting Sundays) between Ash Wednesday and Holy Saturday (the day before Easter) in which we are called to open our hearts before God for honest examination in a spirit of confession, penance, and redirection as we approach the celebration of Christ s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. The word Lent comes from an old word for spring. Lent is a season of renewal. It s a time of rebirth in nature and spiritual rebirth within ourselves as we renew our commitment to God and strengthen our faith. Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, prayer, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. Lent is a season to explore, refocus and renew our faith commitment and allow God to change our hearts and shape and mold us to be what God has created us to be. Lent is a time to consider how we might make room for God in our lives? Lent is a season to immerse ourselves in the words of scripture, Return to me with all your heart (Joel 2:12). May your Lenten season be one of challenge, commitment, and comfort as we seek to respond to the call of God.

9 Lent Experiences Faith UMC offers several opportunities for you to engage in the season of Lent.
