2 Election Time! This is a time of year that we all are interested in, though by October, we are all pretty tired of hearing about it. This is also a time of the year that news shows and Saturday Night Live thrive on because there is usually plenty to talk about and make fun of! This year specifically, emotions and our collective anxiety are high. Within days of reading this, we will be voting, and then we will have the answer of who won the election - and life will slowly begin to return to normal. Some of us have spent quite a bit of time being consumed by it all, and after a few days it s going to be done (Lord, willing). So now what? Of course, there will be months of various types of fall out for those of us who didn t get who we wanted, or even for those of us who voted reluctantly, and now we have a little voter s remorse. This has been a difficult season for sure. I would like to suggest we all take a minute, sit up straight, put your shoulders back, look straight ahead, close your eyes and take a deep, deep breath and then let it ALL out. In fact, let s take a couple deep breaths. [This is the time you are supposed to do it; don t just read it!] Now, let s try to gain some perspective. Though election time, democracy, and world events are important they are not the entirety of life. It is only a part of our life, just like family, food, friends, church, and entertainment are. Consider this passage, Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will (NIV). Paul asks us to take a step back, re-evaluate our lives, and to renew our minds - see the world differently. Intentionally look for what God is doing in the world. Intentionally choose to think differently from the rest of the world. Paul echoes a similar statement in Colossians 3:2, set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. He encourages us to not let the world around us dominate our thinking, but instead to look to Jesus and allow him to shape the way we see the world. And in doing this, as he finishes in Romans 12:2, we will be able to see what God wants (or wills ). Just as we make choices during election time - making decisions about what we want our world to look like - we also need to make choices about what we will think about and how we view our world/ our life. I would like to suggest taking a couple breaks throughout the coming days to take a deep breath, and spend a moment focusing on Jesus - on his kingdom and priorities. This is always good to do, but especially now it is important to refocus and renew our minds. In doing so, you will be taking one step closer to what God wants and what God desires. The world may not change around you, but how we perceive the world and interact with it can sometimes dramatically change the outcomes of our daily lives. - James Ferguson, Modern Worship Leader East Ohio MFSA Program East Ohio MFSA Fall Program When: Saturday, November 12, :00am - 2:30pm Where: Faith United Methodist Church What: Social Justice - The Church and Politics Key note speaker Dr. Martha E. Banks speaking on the topic of Them Angels and Demons Among Us. Followed by a response and reflections presentation by Charita Goshay, Canton Repository columnist. Concluding with a panel discussion. 3 A Season of Prayer: For Election We come together, asking God for courage and wisdom, thanking God for love and joy. As we move toward the election of new leaders for the United States, may we all join in a season of prayer, committing to offer to God our fears and frustrations, our hopes and dreams. NOV. 5: Pray for deliverance from faithless fear and wordly anxiety Most loving Father, whose will it is for us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on you who care for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested to us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. NOV. 6: Pray for quiet confidence 0 God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. NOV. 7: Pray for the nation Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. NOV. 8: Election Day: Pray for the election Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all maybe protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. NOV. 9: Day After Election: Pray to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ today, no matter the election results 0 God: Give me strength to live another day; Let me not turn coward before its difficulties or prove recreant to its duties; Let me not lose faith in other people; Keep me sweet and sound of heart, in spite of ingratitude, treachery, or meanness; Preserve me from minding little stings of giving them; Help me to keep my heart clean, and to live so honestly and fearlessly that no outward failure can dishearten me or take away the joy of conscious integrity; Open wide the eyes of my soul that I may see good in all things; Grant me this day some new vision of thy truth; Inspire me with the spirit of joy and gladness; and make me the cup of salvation to suffering souls; in the name of the strong Deliverer, our only Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. (Prayers were provided in article, A Season of Prayer: for an Election. )
