We let them distract us from being your people in the here and now. Forgive us when we so easily tremble at

3 Minute for Mission: Caregiver Sunday Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29) As our society continues to age we hear more and more about the challenges of dementia. There are now about 5 million people living with Alzheimer s in the United States today, and that number will grow. It has been called the Dementia Tsunami. Alzheimer s disease is the most feared medical condition and there is still no cure. What starts as forgetfulness becomes increasing disability, disconnection, dependence and death. Although we recognize the distress that Alzheimer s and other dementias can cause, we sometimes forget the family members, friends and fellow church members who help carry the burdens of these diseases. Caregivers are far too often weary, overwhelmed and burdened by the physical, emotional and spiritual demands of providing care to those who are forgetful and confused. Many also feel that no one truly understands the challenges they face. People with dementia are loved by God, and it is incumbent upon the church community to support both the individual and the caregivers. Here are ways that churches can help: Be positive about what people with dementia can do rather than what they cannot do. Support people with dementia in making choices. Give them time to choose between coffee and tea at the fellowship time, for example. Listen to what people with dementia are saying. Listen attentively so that they feel respected. Pay attention to body language. Sometimes you can read what people are saying in their faces or with gestures. Avoid correcting what people with dementia say. People with dementia often say things that are not accurate. Try to redirect or distract. Assume people with dementia know what you are saying. Talking about or over a person can be hurtful. Support people with dementia to worship. Large print bulletins and hymnals and using a finger to point to words in the hymnal may help the person to follow along. People remember the words and music of hymns long after other speech is gone. Show love to people with dementia. What better place to mirror God s love than in the church community? We forget that this is your world and that you are always with us. Forgive us when we let other visions of the future control our work and perspective, rather than your vision of peace and harmony. Forgive us for the times we have in words and deeds created more harm than help, more discord than peace. Show us the paths that lead to your peace, and let your peace begin right now in each of us. Forgive us our trust in things other than you...in money, in military might, in economic power, even in our own righteousness. Help us to remember that our only peace and security comes in placing our trust in you above all else. When nothingness seemed to stretch into forever, you spoke,... Thanksgiving Eve service will be held at the new Seventh Day Adventist Church (Route 9) on November 23rd. The service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Reverend Paige Convis from Stuyvesant Reformed Church and Dutch Reformed Church at Muitzeskill in Schodack will be providing the message. Special music will include the Clergy Choir and orchestral accompaniment. Join your neighbors in praising and thanking God for all of life. Refreshments will be served following the service.

5 ANNOUNCEMENTS THE ECUMENICAL FOOD PANTRY continues to meet a growing need in the Ichabod Crane School district. They are grateful for all donations of non-perishable foods (that have a future expiration date) and are asking particularly at this time for rice, tuna, cereals, mac and cheese, and soups. If you have any questions about the Food Pantry or how you might get involved, speak with Dorothy Johnson or Carol Matthews, our representatives on the Food Pantry Committee. NURSERY CARE DURING WORSHIP is provided for infants and children through the second grade. Parents are asked to take their child (ren) to the nursery during the hymn just before the sermon. The nursery is found through the door to the left of the pulpit, down the hall on the left. Children who are in the third grade and older should remain with their families during the worship service. If you would like to honor someone or make a gift in memory of someone, consider giving flowers for a Sunday worship service. A sign-up sheet is in the back of the sanctuary for you to give the information necessary for the bulletin and a form to fill out and put in the Secretary s box. You may bring any flowers you want from the garden to store arranged. We all appreciate the beauty of creation! As Presbyterian Women we seek to serve God by meeting the needs of others. One of these ways is through the annual Thank Offering. Twenty-two grants were awarded this year, fourteen in the United States and eight international. Among these were Backpack Blessings, Inc of New Bern, NC which helped provide meals to children during the summer and Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless which helps homeless citizens obtain and maintain stable permanent housing. Internationally funds went to the Women s Beekeeping Enterprise of Luwerezi, Malawi and the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian to dig a deep well to that will provide water for the community. Please be generous in helping us help others in this season of thanksgiving....so with busybodies and those who are never a burden, with our sisters and brothers from every time and place, we sing our songs of thanksgiving to you: Holy, holy, holy is God who saves us. All creation is glad and rejoices in your forever. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the One who makes your deeds known to all peoples. Hosanna in the highest! Surely you are the One who saves us, Holy God,......As we remember his death offered for us, as we celebrate his life shared with us, we speak of that mystery we know as faith: THE LORD S PRAYER Christ died, trusting in God completely, Christ was raised, resurrection drawn from the springs of salvation; Christ will return, to create us as a joy. BREAKING OF THE BREAD POURING OF THE CUP COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE As I take the bread, I remember to thank God that Christ took up a human body that He was tempted just as I am that He was willing to suffer for me that He lived a hard life in a poor family that He was willing to be misunderstood. As I take the cup, I remember to thank God that Jesus poured out His blood for me that He saves me from the guilt of my sin that He sets me free from the power of sin that I now have the righteousness of Christ that I will live and reign with Christ forever (sins, sin)

6 PRAYER Almighty and Ever-loving God, we thank You that You have fed us at Your Table with this spiritual food and have assured us of Your goodness toward us. We thank You that we are members of the Body of Your Son. Assist us with Your grace, so that we may continue in this holy fellowship, and live more fully to Your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
