1 Grand Knight Notes May Dear Brothers: During the month of April, in addition to the joyful celebration of our risen Lord we as Knights also celebrated the joy of giving from the fruits of the past years fund raising activities. A donation of $1000 was made to St. Vincent de Paul Society to assist in their overwhelming task of helping working poor families, single mothers and homeless in our community. Their work correlates with the vision of Fr. McGivney in forming the Knights of Columbus in A donation of $2500 was made to OLPH to be used at our Pastors discretion for any of the many needs of our Church and facilities. (see page 3) A $500 donation was made to the youth of our Parish who will attend World Youth Day with Pope Benedict XVI this summer in Spain. We also ask your prayers for these future leaders of our Church. Later this month we will provide two $500 scholarship for students graduating from OLPH who will be attending a Catholic High School in the fall. In this addition of our newsletter you will also see pictures of the joint council chili cook off held in April. This was a successful event raising approximately $2000 for the Priest Retirement Fund. A special thanks to our chili cooks and all who participated. Please plan to attend our May meeting on the 10 th to vote for our new officers for the 2011/2012 Columbian year. 4 Reflection Page 4 The months of May and October are two months devoted to Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Rosary, Queen of Heaven and Earth and Queen of Peace! Our Lady s care for us and intervention with her Son on our behalf is one of the great comforts for all of mankind. Over the centuries, Mary has on many occasions shown herself to man and admonished us to pray and do penance. Some of the major apparitions of Our Lady have occurred in the month of May; the most widespread and accepted is the message she left for us with her apparitions at Fatima beginning on May 13 th, The apparitions at Fatima are among the approved apparitions by our Church. Approved means, being authentic and worthy of believe! This approval is not the same as a dogma and while the recognition of authenticity by our Church is a high recommendation to believe, it is not a required act of faith. However, it would be hard to contest the findings of our Church after years of thorough investigation and interviews about the mental balance, honesty, moral life, obedience to Church authority and practice of faith by those involved as well as the resulting devotion and spiritual fruits of people s lives. The millions of faithful who annually visit and pray at the shrines of places like Guadalupe, Lourdes, Fatima and other lesser known places of pilgrimage are indeed proof of spiritual fruits of people s lives. All messages from Our Lady are intended to bring greater glory to Jesus, Our God. Her humble response at the annunciation of being the handmaid of the Lord continues in her intervention with man on behalf of her Son. The impact of apparitions has changed the lives of millions of Catholics and other believers. In a few years after the apparitions at Guadalupe, millions of people were converted to Catholicism. Major Churches and Basilicas were built and became shrines of pilgrimages by millions of people. Devotion to Our Lady increased throughout the world with many conversions and prodigal sons and daughters finding their way home. At Fatima, Our Lady called on us to pray the rosary every day and to do penance. While so much intensity and focus was given to the secrets Our Lady left with the children, the main message was to pray the rosary and do penance! Whatever our individual position is relative to apparitions, we cannot overlook or ignore the message of praying the rosary and to do penance. Prayer means talking to God, to be in communication with him and to find and respond to his will. May we all resolve to respond during this month of May with the daily recitation of the Holy Rosary and pray for Our Church and the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI and all our Priests and Religious. January 21st and 22nd, 2011, we enjoyed the visit of the Pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima at OLPH. For those of you who participated in honoring Our Lady with a visit and prayer, you will remember the serenity and the peace that her image brought to our Church. While we do not pray to or honor a statue, her image gives inspiration and encouragement as we remember her message that she gave to the children at Fatima. Pray the Rosary every day! Every morning say the following prayer: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love you!
5 Page 5 What we should know For those of you who attended the Lenten Mission by Fr. Dave Tobin, you will have read this interesting information he provided with his course in Christianity. We present here some simple facts he gave about Catholics and the Church in the United States in his pamphlet titled: Who started your Church? Here are some facts about the founding of various religions and denominations: Jewish Faith: founded by Abraham 2000 BC; Hindu: developed in India 1500 yrs BC or even earlier. Buddhist: split from Hinduism and founded by Buddha, Prince Siddhartha Gautama, 600 yrs BC Roman Catholic: our religion was founded in the year 33AD by Jesus Christ the Son of God! (Matthew 16/19: upon you Peter I will build MY Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. Jesus did not say: my Churches. (all other religions were started by a human being like you and me). Catholic is a Greek word that means Universal, i.e. the Catholic Church is for EVERYONE. All Catholics are Christians! All Christians are not Catholics! All true Christians believe Jesus is both (equally) God & Man! The Catholic Church cannot add or subtract anything to Jesus teaching, i.e. God s revelation, only interpret! Islam was started by Mohammed in what is now the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at around 600 AD (after Christ) and spread primarily through military conquests throughout North Africa into Spain where the conquests ended. Their military expansion also happened in Eastern Europe before they were stopped from taking over Europe. The Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church separated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1100 AD while the Russian Orthodox Catholic Church (the largest of the Eastern Orthodox Catholics) split in 1448 AD. The major reformation began during the 16th century in Europe when which the Non-Catholic Religions started: The Lutheran Church was founded by Martin Luther, a former Catholic priest, in the year The Church of England (Anglican) was started by King Henry VIII, a Catholic, in response to the Pope s refusal to grant him a divorce from his first wife and not refusing him the right to re-marry in the Church. The Presbyterian Church followed in 1546 started by John Knox in Scotland, and was adopted and further reformed by John Calvin (1564) and along with other reformers like Ulrich Zwingli began The Reformed Churches. The Congregationalists originated in Holland in 1582 and were founded by Robert Brown. The Presbyterian Episcopalian Church is an offshoot of the Church of England (Anglican) and was founded by Samuel Seabury in the American Colonies in the 1600 s; mostly known today as the Episcopalian Church. The Baptist Church was started in Amsterdam, Holland in 1605 by a man named John Smyth. The Baptists are most numerous in the United States of America. The Methodist Church was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England in While we attribute much of the reformation period to Martin Luther, several of the major reformers came from England and Scotland. The Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) originated in the United States of America and was started in Palmyra, New York in 1829 by Joseph Smith. Although not generally regarded as a Church but rather as a sect, The Salvation Army, has its founder in William Booth who started the Army in They are focused on doing charitable works for the less fortunate. Other sects and churches in the US are the Church of Christ, Jehovah Witnesses, Calvary Chapels, Assemblies of God, Christian Scientists, the Nazarene, and many other independent evangelical congregations founded in the past 100 to 150 years. Important to note is that all these Churches, sects and Congregations were founded by men. There are approximately 250,000 to 3000,000 religions or Churches in the United States which seems incredible! Will you believe that 70% of the attendance at new religions is made up of former, fallen away Catholics? The largest number of practicing Christians in the U.S. are Roman Catholic Christians. The second largest number of Christians in the U.S. are non-practicing Roman Catholic Christians. 4 These are some astounding facts and statistics. As the largest number of practicing Christians in the U.S. it is also surprising that the influence of this largest number does not manifest itself more in our legislative arena.
