2 January 15, 2017 A FEW WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR This piece has been around for a while, and I thought I would share it with you since we celebrate this week a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-24). Enjoy this brief introduction to the origins of some other religious denominations! HOW OLD IS OUR CHURCH? IF YOU ARE a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex-monk of the Catholic Church, in the year IF YOU belong to the Church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to re-marry. IF YOU ARE a Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year IF YOU ARE a Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an off-shoot of the Church of England founded by Samuel Seabury in the American colonies in the 17th century. IF YOU ARE a Congregationalist, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in IF YOU ARE a Methodist, your religion was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England in IF YOU ARE a Unitarian, Theoephilus Lindley founded your church in London in IF YOU ARE a Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, New York in IF YOU ARE a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in IF YOU ARE of the Dutch Reformed Church, you recognized Michaelis Jones as founder, because he originated your religion in New York in IF YOU worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in IF YOU ARE a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy as its founder. IF YOU belong to one of the religious organizations known as CHURCH, Pilgrim Holiness Church, or Jehovah s Witnesses, your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past fifty years. 3 LENT IS COMING ARE YOU READY? While we have just concluded our Christmas Season, it might be a good time to remind everyone that the liturgical season of Lent will be starting in just 6 1/2 weeks. Lent arrives on March 1st and we want ALL the members of our parish family to know that we are planning a number of events, services and activities that will enrich us spiritually throughout this sacred season of penitence and prayer. We do hope you will consider joining us for some (or all) of the many opportunities we have planned this Lent so keep your eyes open for more information in the next few weeks! BLESSING OF THROATS As we are all aware, on February 3rd, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Blasé (Bishop and Martyr). St. Blasé has long been associated with the healing of throats. This year Father Frank and Father Kevin will bless our throats at the conclusion of the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, February 4th and at the conclusion of the 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Masses on Sunday, February 5th. If anyone wishes to have their throat blessed, simply stick around after Mass and everyone will have the opportunity to have their throat blessed. CANDLEMAS DAY On Thursday, February 2nd, the church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord the day on which Jesus was presented in the Temple 40 days after his birth, in accordance with Jewish law. This day has also become commonly known as Candlemas Day, the day on which candles are blessed. If anyone has candles at home that they would like to have blessed, please bring them to church with you on the weekend of February 4&5 and we will be more than happy to bless them for you at the conclusion of each of our Sunday celebrations of Eucharist. GOSSIP My name is gossip. I have no respect for justice. I maim without killing. I break hearts and ruin lives. I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age. The more I am quoted, the more I am believed. I flourish at every level of society. My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves against me because I have no name and face. To tract me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more elusive I become. I am nobody s friend. Once I tarnish a reputation, it is never the same. I topple governments and wreck marriages. I make innocent people cry in their pillows. My name is Gossip! This week we celebrate a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Unity was something that Jesus himself prayed for and unity is something we ourselves strive for each day. This week, let s make a conscious effort to say a prayer that one day ALL Christians will be united as one body in praying to the one God who has given life to us all! Please continue to support the food pantry at St. Thomas Aquinas. We are especially in need of hot cereal, soup and toiletries, but whatever you give will be most appreciated!

Brownbaggers Homeless Outreach Welcome John Olash our manager this year of Brownbaggers Homeless Outreach program. If you have a child too young for Faith Formation classes, come join us after the Family Mass in the playroom downstairs, through the door/hallway to the right of the stage. Looking ahead to our next event: Sunday, February 26th We still have a large number of Mass Intentions available for both weekday AND weekend celebrations of Eucharist. Please consider having a Mass celebrated for a loved one or family member either living or deceased. We are ALL in need of prayers, and there is no greater prayer than the celebration of Eucharist. Each Mass Intention is only $ If you are interested in having a Mass celebrated in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of someone who is living, please call Emily at the Rectory and she will be more than happy to assist you. 5 HOSPITALITY SUNDAY Martha s Ministry Martha s Ministry is a new initiative to invite more members of our parish to take stewardship for the events and activities that require some helping hands. It is so deemed Martha s Ministry in honor of Jesus dear friend who concerned herself with the details of hospitality. It is our hope, that many will come forward to participate in this wonderful means of practicing stewardship and to help maintain the vibrancy of our beloved parish. This Ministry is open to teens, young adults, married couples, single men & women, seniors Young and old alike. Whatever talents you can offer as our events come along during the year! Contact Geri Anne at or pogo82595@aol.com for more information. Our next meeting is on January 30th at 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall. PARK SLOPE SINGERS The Park Slope Singers will be presenting its winter concert on Sunday, January 29th at 3:00 p.m. The first half of the program will be twelve 20th century American songs sung from the traditional to the not-yetpublished -- all sung a capella. The second half features The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass which blends the traditional mass with contemporary texts and lively choral voices. The singers will be accompanied by a bluegrass band. The composer, Carol Barnett, has been praised for her musical audacity and cross -pollination of musical styles. Admission is $15.00 ($10.00 for seniors and students). A reception will follow in the parish hall. Please join us for cake and coffee after morning Masses and for wine & cheese after the 5pm. Mass next Sunday, January 22nd. Be careful how you live your life. Your are the only Bible some people will ever read.

6 The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. our rectory office will be closed this Monday, January 16th. Our offices will re-open on Tuesday, January 17th, at 9:30 a.m. Let us remember in prayer this weekend ALL those people who have fought for justice and peace among ALL God s people throughout history. Have you considered joining our parish choir? Remember, those who sing pray twice!
