2 On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: A Partridge in a Pear Tree On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 2 Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree The Twelve Days of Christmas is one of those old favorite Christmas carols that you hear again and again over the holidays. More than any other carol, it is a favorite to sing at parties, not because it has a particularly meaningful message, but more than any other carol, it is the one that is guaranteed to get everyone laughing by the end. It is silly and it is frivolous, and there is no reason whatsoever that you might have ever taken a serious look at its lyrics. But this year I did, and I discovered something I had never thought about before. Did you realize that the gifts given in the carol are cumulative. So while on the first day the singer is given a partridge and a pear tree, on day two the singer is not only given two turtle doves, but another partridge and another pear tree to go with it. And so with each successive day the singer receives not only the new gift for the day, but all the gifts given each preceding day. This means that between the date of December 25 and January 5, the singer has received: 12 Partridges and 12 Pear Trees, 22 Turtle Doves, 30 French Hens, 36 Calling Birds, 40 GOLDEN RINGS, 42 Geese (and however many eggs they laid), 42 Swans, 40 Milkmaids (and as they are milking, the 40 milk cows to go with them), 36 Dancers (all women), 30 Noblemen with a passion for track & field competition (especially the high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump), and a Bagpipe band made up of 22 pipers and 12 drummers (not sure that s such a great gift). That is a total of 416 gifts over the twelve days of Christmas. Yes, this is a truly silly Christmas carol, but it got me thinking; don t the gifts of God work just like this? We read in Isaiah 55: "For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. What God gives to us is not just a one-time gift, but a gift that continues to cumulate blessing from the day it is given for each and every day through the rest of our mortal lives and results in an infinite number of blessed days to come. And so if the true love of the song gave the cumulative earthly gifts of the carol, doesn t that make God our truest love? "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). So as you are enjoying the holiday season and all the fun and frivolity that comes with it, remember who the season is truly about, and the truest and greatest gift that we celebrate each Christmas. Merry Christmas! On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: His only true, begotten Son. Pastor Dave 2

8 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. (Hebrews 1:3) You probably know a mother or father who has a child who looks so much like one of his or her parents that it s almost uncanny. Thanks to the 1997 movie Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, we have a term coined just for such lookalikes mini me. I am fortunate to have a mini me in my 15-yearold daughter, Anna. (Not sure she s so happy about it, but I like it!) But here s the thing: Anna may look a lot like me, but she s her own person. She has gifts and abilities that I don t have, and I have some natural talents that she doesn t share. We may look alike, but we are two unique people. We share DNA, but she is not a clone of her mother or her father. There is one and only one case where the mini me is the exact imprint and likeness of his Father. That one is Jesus. The word used in the Greek to describe this is wait for it, because it s profound character. This description from Hebrews is less concerned with Jesus physical appearance or what he did in his every day life and ministry than it is with who Jesus is. Jesus is God, fully man and fully human. Jesus is the exact image of God the Father, in the flesh, sent to the world to save the world from sin and sorrow. That s what the incarnation of God is all about. Jesus was not born of Mary to be a prophet or an ambassador or a representative of the Creator of the universe. He IS God, who took on flesh, as John 1 reminds us. He came to dwell among us, to pitch his holy tent among us and live beside us and experience everything that we creatures experience every day. Why would God do such a thing? Doesn t he already know how we feel, what we experience, and how we need him? Of course he does; that s not the problem. It was not God s need to be human that brought him to earth as a man, it was humanity s need to know that God knows what it s like to be us. Let me say that again: God took on our flesh and blood so that we would know that he knows what it s like to be human. He wanted us to see and know without a shred of doubt how much he loves us and that he is in complete solidarity with us as human beings, as his children and through Jesus we see the exact nature and being of the Living God. ~ Amy Little (Sola Publishing) 8
