2 Living the Disciple s Life Through the season of Pentecost, I am preparing a series of articles about discipleship. In this month s article (the 6 th and final article in the series) I explore living a disciple s life in in the way of Jesus Christ and then bring this series to its conclusion. Living the disciple s life in the way of Jesus Christ Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Matthew 16:24-25). When you become aware of God s presence in you and with you, and you come to know Him through His Word, something incredible begins to happen: you begin to desire to be LIKE Him. The truest way to know someone more deeply is to stand in their shoes, walk in their footsteps. It does not matter that you fall, it does not matter that you fail. For it is in the trying that one grows closer to God. If you could truly live and act as Jesus lived and acted (truly righteous and free of sin), then you would have no need of Him. It is when you try to walk in Jesus footsteps and fail that you most deeply experience God s presence in your life. For it is when you turn away from Christ s path and stumble and fall that God lifts you up, and turns you back to Him, and sets your feet (once again) on the path which Christ has trod. And in that moment we experience two equal and opposite insights: a profound understanding of just how far beyond us God is, and an equally profound understanding of just how close to us God is. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says "I know him" but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked (1 John 2:1-6). Conclusion Discipleship is not first and foremost about salvation. Salvation is the Father s work of grace, through faith in the Son, by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And discipleship is not a synonym of faith in Jesus Christ. Discipleship is the wholehearted response to the faith given by God. It is the giving of all in response to the one who has given you all; it is the giving up to Him who first gave up everything for you; and it is living for the one who lives in, with and for you. Discipleship is not easy. It requires a total devotion of your life to God and this devotion requires discipline: A discipled commitment to living each and every moment of each and every day in relationship with God who has first established this relationship with you; a discipled commitment to learning from God more about God through His ultimate revelation of Himself, His own true Son, and the Scriptures that testify to Him; and a disciplined commitment 2

3 to follow Jesus, to do as Jesus did and as He would have us do, and to become more like Him. Discipleship is difficult, but the benefits far outweigh the costs. We will only experience the full blessings of eternal life in the resurrection, but what price would you pay to experience even the smallest part of those blessings now. This is what discipleship is all about. We live is a world today where most people doubt the value of the church and question why they would want to have anything to do with it (or with God). It is not enough to tell them about Jesus and the blessings of eternal life, we must show them. We need disciples. We have many people who want to tell us about God and many people who would lead us in worshiping God, but when was the last time you met someone who could actually show you God is a real and very personal way. This is what disciples do. They live in a consciously aware relationship with God; continually learning more and more about God; and in that relationship and through that learning, continually seeking to follow in His ways and become more like Him. It is through the lives of disciple that we can glimpse God with us. So, will you be a disciple? "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple (Luke 14:26-33). They provide an opportunity for church members to share ideas of good nutrition, strengthen friendships, and celebrate God s goodness. Even in the days of Israel there was a coming together for feasting and socializing... What better way for family, friends, and visitors to relax together in a spiritual setting than by choosing to fellowship together through sharing a meal. Although many believers today do not recognize the importance of fellowship or local church involvement, Christian fellowship is essential to spiritual growth. Many aspects of our spiritual lives depend on being together with other believers to encourage, teach, serve, and share life together Fellowship meals may consist of a dinner menu to include: entrees, cooked vegetables, salads and/or relishes, breads, beverages, and desserts. Other ideas for meal planning include soup and salad menus, theme menus, holiday type meals, and build your own meal from simple ingredients from a baked potato bar, salad or sandwich bar. Anything goes the simpler the better! We will have a fellowship meal each month, excluding December & May, every 2 nd Sunday. We will pass a sign-up sheet for a Host/Hosts for each month and then hang in the Narthex. This can be one family or more anything goes! In general, the host is responsible for the main course, while the other guests bring a salad/vegetable dish, an appetizer, or a dessert to round out the meal. At the end of each month we will pass a signup sheet for the rest of the meal for the next month. 5 TLC Women s November mission is to provide 20 meals for Thanksgiving for Food Pantry. Each Sunday in November we will be collecting items to complete a Thanksgiving meal.
