1 Cross of Glory & West Freeborn Lutheran Churches November 2018 Sunday Morning Worship times: Cross of Glory: West Freeborn: 10:30 a.m. Passover The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. (Exodus 12:13) Churches will talk about Passover, but not nearly as often or in the same way as you would hear about it if you attended a Jewish Synagogue. Passover refers to a number of things, but mainly it is a holiday celebrated by the people of Israel, the Jewish people. We Christians know about it because Jesus was Jewish and he celebrated the Passover, and it was during the Passover meal that he took bread and wine and established our practice of communion. Long, long ago the people of Israel were the slaves of the Egyptians. With Moses helping, God set about the work of freeing those slaves by sending ten plagues against the people of Egypt. The Passover refers to the last of those plagues, the decisive one that convinced the Pharaoh to let the slaves go free. God would kill every firstborn child in the country, human and animal, but spared the families of the Israelites who were told to smear the blood of a lamb on their doorpost. The plague of death would pass over those homes. It certainly would be nice if there were some magic potion that we could smear on our doorframe, or even on ourselves, that would spare us from ever having to undergo any pain or tragedy. Of course, there is no such thing. Which is why it is so important to remember what Jesus did that night when he and his disciples were celebrating the Passover. There was no avoiding the cross, but Jesus accepted that fate telling his disciples that it is his body given for them, and his blood that is shed for them. It is nothing magical, but while we still must deal with death, the power of death has been removed. Yours in Christ, Pastor Schwartz 1

2 Joint Council meeting Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at Cross of Glory Cross of Glory Trustees and Deacons Meeting - October 2 nd, 2018 Jerry Morstad called the second half of the meeting to order. Jerry Morstad, Martin Johnson, Ron Bartness, Kristi Thofson, Carol Riskedahl, Tim Bartness, Rachel Knudson, Cathy Crowe, Matt Hoelscher, Paul Lynne, and Pastor Steve were present. Rachel Knudson read the secretary s report. The minutes were approved as read. Cathy Crowe read the treasurer s report. Cathy expressed her gratitude to everyone who has chipped in to increase their offerings. Matt Hoelscher made a motion to accept the treasurer s report and pay the bills as money allows. Paul Lynne seconded. Old Business: 1. The piano tuning has been completed. 2. Jim & Dude s will install the sump pump. Jerry and Tim got the pit dug. New Business: 1. The Confirmation brunch menu has been decided and tickets will be $6 apiece. There will be takeout available for farmers in the fields. 2. Cross of Glory will be hosting the Thanksgiving service this year. Paul Lynne made a motion to designate the offering to the NR Area Food Shelf. Martin Johnson seconded. 3. We received a letter from the SEMN Synod asking us to consider increasing our annual giving. 4. We discussed our insurance policy. We will plan to review our coverage after we ve completed our claim. Martin Johnson made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Paul Lynne seconded. Closed with the Lord s Prayer. LWR staff and their partner, CARITAS, distributed the quilts and kits to 30,600 women, men and children all across the country. Mountain dwelling families especially welcomed the warmth of quilts as winter temperatures began to set in, hitting average lows in the 30 s in July and August. 3

5 HARVEST BAZAAR Where: West Freeborn Lutheran Church When: Sunday, November 18, 2018 Time: We will have a Polka Church Service starting at 9:00 am. The Harvest Bazaar will start shortly after church is over. We would like everyone to come and bring your bidding hands with you!! There will be a lunch following the auction. The proceeds from the bazaar will go towards designated projects. Be sure and invite all your friends, neighbors and relatives. Tell them about the Polka Church Service and what a great time we have. 7 Do-It-Yourself Bible Study For our Bible study this month let s look at 2 Kings 22. If you find this intriguing I hope that you will join others to go deeper. Doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord is a common theme in the two Old Testament books of the Kings. Leader followed leader, mistakes were compounded, and God was displeased with the nation s direction. Read 2 Kings 22:1-10. A singular exception to the nation s poor leadership was young King Josiah. He takes on the task of repairing the temple. After years of neglect, what might this accomplish? The high priest Hilkiah just happens to find the book of the law in the temple and turns it over to King Josiah s secretary. Chances are that the high priest knew what he was doing and hoped for more than simply building repairs to come as a result. Read 2 Kings 22: The book that was found was most likely all or part of the book of Deuteronomy, judging by the response of the king. How will adding the words of scripture to the rebuilding of the temple affect the changes Josiah is hoping to make? King Josiah is looking to bring a sense of pride and direction to the nation that has been missing, and God approves of the way that he is going about making these changes. The King will rid the nation of the items of idol worship and restore the neglected religious festivals. Read 2 Kings 22: King Josiah s attempt at reforming the nation was shortlived. Not long after his death the temple will be destroyed by a foreign power. If you had the opportunity to make one thing about our nation reflect God s will, what would that one thing be?
