Driven is a dynamic word describing movement, activity, duty and mobility. That description suits the NALC well. We are Mission Driven. We are centered in Christ. We are grounded in tradition. We are focused on congregations, and we are driven with the mission of making disciples of all nations. An update can be found below on a few resources designed as practical tools to assist our congregations, leaders, and members on the journey of life to life discipleship and mission. 2 Psalm 46 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. This month Trinity and Badger Lutheran churches is leading a community wide Vacation Bible School titled Mighty Fortress. This medieval themed VBS program is inspired by the famous hymn written by Martin Luther in Luther wrote this hymn ten years after he posted his 95 Theses one of the lowest periods in his life. In the months leading up to his writing of this hymn, Luther was beset with political, theological, physical, emotional, and spiritual assaults. During this time Luther felt utterly abandoned by Jesus and was deeply tempted to reject God entirely. But in the midst of His suffering, Luther mind turned back to one of his favorite Psalms (Psalm 46). As pondered this Psalm in his despair, he realized something that lifted him out of his anguish. He saw that God does not promise to keep us from trouble. Rather He promises to be our help in the midst of our trouble. He saw that God promises to be our fortress precisely because we need a place of refuge in this life. He understood that while Christ s victory is ultimately assured, that does not mean that we can live free of hardship and strife in this life. You only needs a fortress when you are under siege, and God has promised to be that fortress for us in this life, each and every day. In realizing this, he wrote this great hymn based upon the even greater truth revealed in Psalm 46. This is the great news we are sharing this month with the children of our community through our Vacation Bible School program. Jesus is not just there for us when things are good. No, Jesus is with us, strengthening us and defending us each day of our life. When we face obstacles; when we re afraid, when we doubt; when we feel most alone, Jesus is there with us. This year, at Mighty Fortress VBS, we are sharing with this kids in our community that in Jesus, the victory is won! A Mighty Fortress, by Martin Luther A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; He breaks the cruel oppressor s rod and wins salvation glorious. The old evil foe, sworn to work us woe, with dread craft and might he arms himself, on earth he has no equal. No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God Himself elected. Ask who this may be: The Lord of hosts is He! Jesus Christ, our Lord, God s only Son adored. He holds the field victorious. Though hordes of devils fill the land all threatening to devour us, we tremble not, unmoved we stand; they cannot overpower us. This world s prince may rage, in fierce war engage. He is doomed to fail; God s judgement must prevail! One little word subdues him. God s Word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes who fear it; for God Himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. If they take our house, goods, fame, child, or spouse, wrench our life away, they cannot win the day. The Kingdom s ours forever! Pastor Dave 2

Patterson and friends, Kathryn and I would like to express our deep gratitude to all of you for inviting us to be a part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration earlier this month. It was wonderful to see so many friends who gave us the love and support we needed as we began parish ministry for the first time and began raising our two children. We could not have had a better community than Lake Norden and parish than Trinity/Clara. Seeing and visiting with old friends and meeting new ones will always be a super memory. After our move to Detroit Lakes, we will be much closer and may see each other more often. I wish you all the Blessings of The Lord's Spirit. Yours in Christ's Service, Parson Larson and Kathy 5

8 Trinity Lutheran Church Worship & Music Committee We are working to establish a Worship & Music Committee for Trinity Lutheran Church beginning this Fall. Please read through this handout and ask yourself if the Lord may be calling you to be a part of the important ministry in the life of Trinity Lutheran Church. Worship is a unifying event in the life of a congregation. It is the one time when all members join together in a common purpose to worship and thank God for God s grace given to all in Word and Sacrament. The liturgy (a Greek word meaning the work of the people) can connect all of the congregation s programs: evangelism, stewardship, education, property, music, youth ministry, fellowship, and more. Because worship is a unifying event within a congregation, one committee should oversee all worship in a congregation. Because worship is at the heart of a congregation s life, the decisions made by the worship committee ultimately affect all. Effective communication is vital. Not only do decisions have to be made clear for those who must carry them out, but the committee also may need to educate the congregation and those charged with worship responsibilities. Poor communication not only produces poor worship, but also may lead to frustration and confusion. Responsibility for communication with all worshiprelated organizations (such as ushers, office staff, musicians, altar guild, and so forth) and other committees should be explicitly assigned to particular members and carried out efficiently. Membership The Worship committee need not be large. However, the committee should include: the pastor; the musicians; a chairperson who consults with the pastor, musicians, and others to prepare an agenda for each meeting, facilitates meeting, seeks clarity about implementation of committee decisions and coordinates the work of individual members to ensure implementation; a secretary, who prepares and distributes minutes from each meeting and cares for all official correspondence; and coordinators representing worship-related groups (e.g. choir, altar guild, ushers, greeters, acolytes, assisting ministers, and lectors). There is also a need for "at-large" members whose primary role is to represent the congregation. Responsibilities The entire committee will be responsible for the following: visioning (based on mutual learning and involvement in the worship life of the congregation), policy making (including making recommendations to council), evaluating regular liturgies and special events, receiving feedback from the congregation, coordinating with other committees. Individual or subcommittee responsibilities might include the following: training and coordination of particular lay ministries (lay assisting ministers, readers, 8

9 altar guilds, acolytes, etc.), planning worship, environment and seasonal decorating, coordinating special worship related events, arranging for event receptions and regular fellowship, managing publicity for liturgies and other events, preparing explanatory and/or inspiring articles in the newsletter or on our website about particular services and times in the church year The Worship committees will be responsible for selecting and maintaining worship books, vestments, paraments, communion vessels, and musical instruments; purchasing candles, bread, wine, flowers, music, seasonal needs and decor; recruiting members for organizations such as choirs, altar guild and so forth; providing worship education; caring for the committee budget; reassessing worship times; providing opportunities for community singing; and staying aware of liturgical trends and concerns within the Lutheran tradition partners. And So Together I saw a garden the other day, Each flower special in its own way. For while they bloomed each on their own, It was together their beauty shone. If one would need more light or air, The others would kneel and so would share. If one would wither for lack of rain, The tears of the others would stem the pain. And so together the flowers grew, In strength and love their lifetime through. ~ Margie Nutter Be kind to one another with brotherly love and honor. Romans 12:10 Luther s Prayer for Guidance Dear Lord God, Give us your guidance That we may rightly understand Your Word and more than that, do it. O most blessed Lord Jesus Christ, See to it that our search after knowledge Leads us to glorify you alone. If not, let us not know A single letter. Give only what we, Poor sinners, Need to glorify you. Amen. 9

10 American Mission: Sharing God s Mighty Word A Ministry of Concordia Publishing House CGO is the charity of Concordia Publishing House, a nonprofit Lutheran organization. For over 145 years, CPH has produced doctrinally sound materials for churches and individuals on behalf of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. All of the books that CGO sends around the world are published by CPH. Because every book passes through a review process to be examined for biblical accuracy, each book CGO sends is trusted to be biblically based and doctrinally sound. Our History In 1958, Concordia Publishing House became aware of the great need for Bible-based literature that could be used for missional outreach. To support these critical ministry efforts, CPH established and partnered with Concordia Tract Mission, a program that sent millions of tracts around the world during its time. The program was renamed Concordia Gospel Outreach in 1992 to more accurately reflect its reach and mission. Today, CGO continues to provide Bible-based materials to ministry outreach programs worldwide. WHO WE ARE We are an international relational network. Founded in 1992, following the fall of communism, EEMN is a conservative, evangelical, pan-lutheran but first and foremost Christian mission organization that connects partners with indigenous Christians living in former communist and Soviet bloc nations. EEMN is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is registered in Bloomington, MN and headquartered in Albuquerque, NM. We are blessed to serve alongside a vast network of North American supporters, throughout the US and Canada. WHAT WE DO Connecting People to Christian Missions. Our primary passion is twofold: Engaging in the Gospel with people who have never encountered the saving grace, love, and mercy of God in Christ Jesus; and connecting North American and international ministries to teach and equip a new generation of leaders committed to building authentic communities in Christ. WHY WE DO IT Every Life Transformed in Christ! Because of the 400+ year physical presence of the Lutheran Church in East Europe, Russia, and the Balkans EEMN is uniquely poised to network with the remnant of indigenous co-workers in ministry from the historical Lutheran Church. We do recognize the strength in an ecumenical witness of our life in Jesus Christ and so we also collaborate with Christians from other conservative traditions. The goal is Engaging, Reclaiming, and Transforming Every Life in Christ! 10
