2 No one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins--and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins." Mark 2:22 One of the most difficult things that we, as the Church, are tasked to do is to set aside our own comfort for those who are not even a part of the Church. We have grown up in the church the way it is, and no one is comfortable with the idea of change. But in truth, the Church does not exists for our comfort, but for Christ s mission. If we as the Church are to be what Christ meant us to be, we must continually change so that we may continually reach outside of ourselves to our ever-changing community. Abigail Van Buren (Dear Abby) wrote, The church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints. If you have received the healing power of the Gospel and have been made righteous in the eyes of God through the blood of Jesus Christ, then you have two options for how you will live as part of Christ s Church: you can become part of Christ s healing mission to other sinners in our community, or you simply occupy the church as a righteous person, making no room for those who are sick and in need of the Great Physician. Jesus said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners" (Mark 2:17). This challenge is not easy for any of us. But if the Church is to continue in our community, the Gospel must be continually preached in our community. Not just to those who come and hear it every week, but to those who most need to hear it those outside of the Church. So ask yourself, what am I doing to bring the Gospel to my neighbor? Am I acting as a part of Christ s Church as part of His healing mission to the world, or am I just sitting in my pew as an artifact in a museum of what the church once was? We most truly become part of Christ s Church, not when we sit in our pews, but when we stand up and walk out into our community to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 1 Corinthians 9:

7 Into Your Hands Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! Luke 23:46 As my grandmother approached death, her mind went back to her childhood in Chicago, even to the point of her German evening prayer: Ich bin klein, mein herz ist rein. For many of us, that childhood prayer would be Now I lay be down to sleep; I pray thee Lord, my soul to keep, Commending our souls to the Lord s care. As he neared death, Jesus said a prayer he may have prayed as a child: Into your hands I commit my spirit, (Psalm 31:5). Having said this, he breathed his last. In death he knew the perfect peace of his Father s arms. Like Jesus, we know that peace as we pray each day, For into your hands I commend myself, my body, and souls and all things. Redeemed, safe and secure, we find rest our Father s loving arms. Into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things. Amen. Rest: Commit your concerns to God in prayer. Then let them go. His hands can handle them. Read: Psalm 31:1-5 Eileen Ritter, Byron Center, MI Insults If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross. Matthew 27:40 When someone is accusing you of something, what do you do? We want to speak up and defend ourselves to preserve our reputation, especially if the accusation is false. When Jesus was hanging on the cross, many who were present were hurling insults at him. Can you imagine what was going through Jesus mind? As true man, he may have been tempted to get down from the cross and prove to these people that he was true God. But, as true God, he knew he had to suffer and die for our sins. Isaiah 53:7 tells us, He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. Through all the insults, Jesus did not say anything. He suffered silently so that we would one day share his victory. Dear Jesus, we praise you for your silent suffering and death that won salvation for us. Amen. Reflect: Think about the difficulty of remaining silent under insults and accusations. 9 In his 69 years, José Martinez has lived through a lot. LWR Farmers Market Coffee From the NALC In the 1970s, war in Nicaragua forced his family to leave their hometown and move to San Isabel. He and his wife have 10 children five sons and five daughters. By the 1980s, José had begun growing a small amount of coffee as a part of a cooperative that he compares to the army, because he was told what to do on his farm and wasn t allowed to manage himself. In 1986, through land reforms, José received a parcel of land of about seven hectares (about 17 acres), and immediately gave a small piece of land to each of his children and they, too, began to grow coffee. José says that before he became a member of the SOPPEXCCA cooperative Lutheran World Relief s long-time partner in Nicaragua he experienced many unfair practices in the coffee business. He d lost money with other cooperatives, and at times had to sell his coffee to middlemen who did not pay good prices. As a member of SOPPEXCCA, he says, he manages his own farm. He s his own boss. That s important to him because, he says, when you go and work for someone if you re sick, you ll need to take sick time, and you won t have enough money, but if you work your own land, you can produce your own food for your own table. And he does, indeed, produce food for his table and a great variety of it! José now grows coffee, cocoa, plantains, and yucca. Some of his crops support his family s needs and the surplus he sells for income. José is proud of his coffee, and very committed to quality. He boasts that he only sends the highest quality, ripest coffee to SOPPEXCCA. This is the coffee you have the opportunity to taste through the LWR Farmers Market, a new line of coffee sourced directly from farmers participating in Lutheran World Relief projects. Every delicious cup helps transform poor communities that depend on their coffee crop to feed their families. Farmers like José are given a stable, predictable, and higher price upfront for their beans and are partners in the coffee business. José is deeply invested in his family and community. But if you ask him what he is most proud of, it s the legacy he s leaving to his children, through the land he s given them. They can harvest it themselves, because they own it, he says. Taste the care and hard work José, and the farmers of SOPPEXCCA, put into every coffee bean included in LWR Farmers Market Coffee. Visit to make an LWR Farmers Market Coffee purchase and support farmers like José. 9

10 ILT Receives Accreditation February 20, 2018 I remember vividly early summer of 2006 after the WordAlone Annual Meeting had just voted to move forward implementing an independent, autonomous, and fully accredited house of studies committed to the Biblical hermeneutic of the Lutheran Reformation. When writing the report that I had brought to the convention, I remember clearly thinking, this is going to be a tremendous amount of work if we can pull it off. I must admit that it has been a tremendous amount of work, and we did do it! We have just been notified by the Commission on Accreditation of the Association of Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) that we have been voted to receive initial ABHE accreditation! Since we are already independent and autonomous, accreditation completes the original three conditions I specified that the Institute must possess. God be praised! ABHE accreditation means that we are officially recognized now by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as an accredited US educational institution. ABHE accreditation, like Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accreditation, is comprehensive and institutional. It is not less difficult to achieve than HLC accreditation, though unlike HLC accreditation, it recognizes the religious nature and religious challenges of its member institutions. (Yes, the annual meeting opens with prayer!) We like working with ABHE because they have definitely helped us be the best we can be without placing upon us some of the political correctness conditions of both HLC and ATS (American Theological School) accreditation. Our newly accredited status has some immediate benefits: We soon will be designated by edu rather than org in our url and will be eligible for all of the educational vendor bundling of large universities. Our programs, now fully accredited, will meet the conditions specified by the federal government -- including the US military -- whose employees receive direct funding of continuing education. We will be able to operate legally in all 50 US states and Canadian provinces as an educational institution rather than a religious organization. Students can say that their degree is from a fully accredited institution. Everybody should realize, however, that students will likely not learn more at ILT than before. ILT accreditation will not likely affect the quality of student educational experience. ILT educational products have always been of high quality, and it is difficult to improve when one is already doing it correctly. What accreditation does is announce to the world that we are a going concern institutionally. We are not just involved in the ad hoc training of a few good pastors, but are an institution with multi-generational staying power, a comprehensive institution that has a seminary, but is also involved in granting academic degrees to those wanting to study theology to the glory of God. The board, staff, faculty and students of ILT thank all of you who have prayed for us and supported us financially during this long process of achieving accreditation. We look forward to God s future, trusting that ILT will continue to be a blessing to students, to the Church, and to the culture in which we find ourselves. In Christ, President Dennis Bielfeldt, Ph.D. 10
