1 Listening for the Promise Weekly Devotional Fourth Sunday of Easter April 26 th, 205 By what power or by what name did you do this? Acts 4:7b Important people are mentioned in today s passage. They were men of power and position; they were from the high priestly family. They were accompanied by the rulers, elders, and scribes. These men made up the Jerusalem Sanhedrin, the ruling body of the Jews. The court was mostly made up of Sadducees, men from a sect of Judaism that did not believe in resurrection. Though some Jews believed in a doctrine of resurrection, the Sadducees adamantly rejected it. This is why the disciples preaching was particularly disturbing to them. They could not allow the idea of resurrection to gain popularity among the people. They had to put a stop to it, so Peter and John were arrested. The catalyst for this arrest was the healing of the lame beggar who asked Peter and John for alms. Instead of money, Peter commanded the lame beggar to walk, by the name of Jesus. Peter gave the man a new life and then told the amazed crowds that it was not by his power or ability that the beggar was healed; the healing came by the power of the one they had crucified, the one God raised from the dead. Peter told the people, Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out. He spoke about the forgiveness that comes from Jesus Christ. The Court asked Peter and John about the power and name they invoked for the healing. Peter answered, If we ve been arrested because we kindly helped a cripple, then know this: it is Jesus name that healed the man. Jesus is the source of their power. The Sanhedrin might have let them go, except they did more than just heal the man. They offered forgiveness of sins, the same blasphemous crime that Jesus committed. The Sanhedrin, especially the high priests, rejected the capstone of everything the disciples preached: the resurrection of Jesus which gave Him the authority to transform the world. This was the crime for which they had been arrested. The proclamation that Jesus is the only way to salvation took away the power of the Jewish leaders; that is why they destroyed Jesus in the first place and why the world still threatens the faithful today. We need not fear because Jesus continues to be the power and authority behind the forgiveness that blots out our sins. Sami is due in September. Grandparents are Bob & Theresa Hauschildt of Lake Norden and Mona Matson of Hayti. Valerie was born on March 3 st weighing 7 lb oz and 20 inches in length. 4 April 26, 205 Fourth Sunday of Easter Prayer of the Day Almighty God, you show those in error the light of your truth, that they may return into the way of righteousness. Grant to all that are admitted into fellowship with Christ the power to avoid all things that are contrary to the faith and to follow you according to the will of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. First Reading: Acts 4:-2 As {the disciples} were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power or by what name did you do this? 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 0 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 2 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 2 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 3 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 4 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 5 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 6 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 7 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 8 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.
