2 Listening for the Promise The Epiphany of Our Lord January 6, 2018 Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. - Isaiah 60:3 Global Magnetism Take a good long look today. Gaze far outside the room where you now sit, and behold the global epiphany of Jesus. An epiphany is a revealing, a making known, a public showing that is a great ah ha moment. January 6th is called Epiphany Day - the 12th day of Christmas - marking the visual appearance of Jesus to the nations. On this day the magi from the East got an eye-full. They got to see the glory of God revealed in the Babe of Bethlehem. To these kings on camels from across the desert is made known who the Ruler of the universe really is. These are Gentiles, not Jews. They are foreigners, of other tongues, not the chosen people of Abraham. And here they are, in the Nativity story. They were well-off and educated experts in astronomy and ancient writings. (Think: PhD-types). They were Persians, with a wholly different worldview and culture. And yet, here they are, given a key role in the Lord s invasion of Earth. They illustrate the world-wide scope of this Jesus. As the lowly shepherds signify the gift of the Savior for local commoners, now these magi too get a peek at what God has done. These rich and learned foreigners are in on this salvation from on high. Talk about inclusivity; the Lord is going all out. Jesus is for everyone! He was multicultural centuries before we knew about that word. From Jesus first entry into our human race, it is revealed that God s love is universal. Now today, can you see how wide is this child s sway? Isaiah was absolutely correct: Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Yup, nations and kings across the centuries and around the world do come to Christ s light. Christians come in every color and every language, in all age groups and income levels. Jesus has a global magnetism. Jesus reigns from pole to pole. Our joyous response is Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Lift up your eyes round about and see! (Isaiah 60:1, 4). Happy Epiphany! Sola Worship Resource Weekly Devotional 2018, Sola Publishing ( written by Chris Brekke. Looking up, he saw a mishmash of threads & ugly knots, but no discernable picture or words. Nana, he said with concern, that s not very pretty. Come up here, Grandma invited, and look at it from this side. You have to see it from my perspective. Oh! the boy exclaimed then. It s beautiful! Today the Magi gaze in deep wonder at what they see: heaven on earth, earth in heaven, humanity in God, God in humanity, one whom the whole universe cannot contain now enclosed in a tiny body. As they look... their symbolic gifts bear witness: incense for God, gold for a king, myrrh for one who is to die. Peter Chrysologus (5th century) Seeing the world from our human, earthly viewpoint, we can t grasp the masterpiece that God is completing. But when we finally see it from his perspective, we ll discover that the threads & knots all contribute to a beautiful work of art. That work won t be finished until Jesus returns, but in the meantime, may God grant us an occasional glimpse of the work in progress from God s side! 7

8 Emmanuel: The Glory of Christmas By Max Lucado & Charles Swindoll Then the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10-11 We worry. We worry about the IRS and the SAT and the FBI. We worry we won t have enough money, and when we have money we worry that we won t manage it well. We worry that the world will end before the parking meter expires. We worry what the dog thinks if he sees us step out of the shower. We worry that someday we ll learn that fat-free yogurt was fattening. Honestly, now. Did God save you so you would fret? Would he teach you to walk just to watch you fall? Would he be nailed to the cross for your sins and then disregard your prayers? I don t think so either. ~ Max Lucado (in the Grip of Grace) A Tree That Points to Jesus By David Mead I love to see my Christmas tree. It glows so bright and heavenly, Reminding me at Christmas time Of how the starry skies did shine In Bethlehem so long ago When heaven s angels were aglow. To shepherds who were filled with fear The shining angel did appear And brought good tidings of great joy. The Light of God a baby boy- Was wrapped with love that very morn. The Savior of the world was born. So when I see my tree so bright, I thank God for his gift of Light. For Christ was born for you and me That we may all shine heavenly. A bright, eternal life s in store With him in heaven forevermore. The Three Wise Men In the dessert, very far, Wise Men saw a shining star. They all cheered a cheery cheer. This star means a King is near! Lets go find him right away. Grab your camel. Leave today! So they all sat on a hump and they followed. Bump, bump, bump. That bright star was leading them to a child in Bethlehem. They gave him some gifts, I m told: Myrrh and frankincense and gold. David Mead, 2005 Creative Communications for the Parish. 8

9 Daily Bible reading guide from the NALC, LCMS & LCC Reading the Word of God, a daily Bible reading guide, has been prepared for Lutherans to use over the next three years. The NALC has joined with the Lutheran Church-Canada & the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod to compile a three-year plan of daily Bible readings & a year-long series of weekly readings on Martin Luther s approach to the Scriptures. Daily Readings The daily readings are listed on calendars for 2018, 2019 and The plan provides a guide that will take the reader through the entire Old Testament one time in three years, with the exception of Psalms, which are read twice each year. The New Testament will be read twice in the three years. A reading from the Old Testament, a psalm (or portion of a psalm) and a reading from the New Testament are assigned for each day. Certain church festivals Christmas, Easter, Pentecost and so forth have readings appointed for the specific occasion. Weekly Readings As a companion to the Daily Reading Guide, the participants of the NALC-LCC-LCMS consultations are also offering selected readings from the work, Luther and the Scriptures, by Johann Michael Reu, ( ) a German-born American Lutheran pastor, theologian & educator who taught from 1899 until his death at Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA. As Luther speaks to us of the clarity, simplicity, and trustworthiness and infallibility of Scripture, it is our hope & prayer that each member, household & congregation will turn daily to the Biblical readings with renewed desire for the Word which is a lamp to [our] feet & a light to [our] path (Ps. 119:105). If you are interested in participating in this journey, copies have been made in the Narthex to pick up. If more are needed (which would be awesome!) please let Brittany know and she will print a copy for you. 9
