2 Cindy and I want to thank you for the pleasure and privilege of serving as your pastor these past 32 months. It is a sad and difficult decision to resign. But we honestly believe it is in the best interests of all that we resign and move on, and you begin the process of calling a new pastor. Both Badger and Trinity Lutheran have many things to commend to the next pastor. You are people of faith under the authority of the Scriptures. Otherwise, you wouldn t have the courage and strength to leave the ELCA and become a part of the NALC. You also know and appreciate God s gospel of the crucified and resurrected Jesus for our salvation and as the source of our Christian life. You have demonstrated willingness to support the spread of this Gospel globally as well as sharing the love of Christ closer to home. The food pantry is a jewel to this community and the nearby area. Your young people are some of the finest we ve ever worked with. In addition to all these things, both congregations have shown an open mindedness about the use of digital technology to enhance worship and confirmation instruction. Our prayer for you all is that you stretch yourself a little more in the areas of evangelism and Christian Education by inviting the unchurched to worship and helping the next pastor with visits to the in-actives. Again, the use of Social Media and Digital Technology will serve you well in these efforts. Please keep us in your prayers too. God bless you as we say goodbye March 13 th. If I have failed you in any way as a pastor, please forgive me. We will always treasure the friendship and support you gave us. Christ s love to you, Pastor Mark 2 P a g e

5 Read Matthew 28:1-8 Jesus, do you know what I m thinking? I wish I could have been there to see you after you rose from the dead. I wish I could see you with my own eyes. I want to hold your hand, to hug you. I want to know that feeling of excitement to see you alive and in the flesh. Do you know how much I love you, Jesus, even though I couldn t be there? Thank you, God, for sending me the gift of Jesus. I praise you for raising him from the tomb long ago. Thank you for giving me faith just like Jesus disciples who touched and held him, who heard his words and trusted in him. I believe that Jesus is my Savior. Sometimes it causes me to tremble, to shake with awe, thinking about what it was like to be there when God raised Jesus from the tomb! While Jesus was dying on the cross, who mocked him, saying, He saved others; he cannot save himself? A. Priests B. Scribes C. Elders D. All of the above Answer: D (See Matthew 27:41-42.) 5 P a g e

7 The Season of Easter Fortunately, just as Lent is a season, so Easter is a season as well, an even longer one. As the church celebrates the Great Fifty Days of Easter, it may be hard to keep the momentum going but it should be worth the effort. Can each service (or each school day, as well as each day at home) begin with (or at least include prominently) the traditional Easter greeting, The Lord is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! If the Gospel for the day is not read in procession from the center aisle of the church on a regular basis, Easter Day and the Great Fifty Days of Easter would be a good time to do so. Be sure to explain that this is a way of illustrating that the living Christ is in our midst, confronting us as he confronted the first witness of his resurrection two millennia ago. That s a point that can be made already on the Second Sunday of Easter, when Jesus confronts his disciples (and especially Thomas) personally and dramatically. The weekly confrontations with the Risen Christ in the readings become a kind of foretaste of the feast to come, a celebration of our togetherness as the family of God looking forward to feasting with the Lord eternally at his heavenly banquet table even as we gather around the Lord s table now and around our own tables in his name; being led and sheltered by the good Shepherd as his gathered flock; being numbered with the saints in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, longing to follow our ascended Savior to heaven, but obligated to stay together and live together and work together as his beloved children now, even as we wait together for his grand return. Easter Day & the Season of Easter Easter Sunday is the earliest uniquely Christian festival, celebrating Jesus resurrection from the grace in triumph over sin and death. This festival was first mentioned by name in 130 A.D. The season of Easter lasts 50 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost. New Christian converts in the earliest centuries were trained and tested in Lent and finally baptized at the Easter Vigil. The days after Easter were the time for them to explore the meaning of their new life in Christ and the significance of the mysteries of Baptism and Holy Communion, of which they were now partakers. Today, the Easter Vigil is being celebrated in more and more parishes on the eve of Easter, reinstating the most ancient celebration of the church as it was observed in the earliest centuries. The celebration of our baptism at Easter is growing, too. Baptism joins all of God s people with the death and resurrection of our Lord. For us, too, the Easter season s 50 days is a time to rediscover how the mystery of salvation and resurrection now can become a more influential part of our life for the coming year. And, remember, the Easter celebration continues with every week of the Church Year, for every Sunday is a little Easter. Days and Dates for Easter & the Easter Season The date for Easter in Western Church falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox (March 21 st ). Therefore, Easter may fall anywhere from March 22 nd to April 25. All the other festival dates of the church year (except for Advent through the Epiphany) depends on the date of Easter, which may vary by more than a month! The Easter church follows a different calendar, with the result that their celebrations of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter often do not coincide with those in the West. Images & Words Easter: The English word Easter is borrowed from the name of a pagan spring festival and is related to the fact that the sun rises in the East. He is risen! and the reply He is risen indeed! are the most ancient and always-new shouts of Christian people at Easter. Jesus Christ is risen today is the same shout in the form of a well-known Easter hymn, a Latin carol from the 14 th century, which was set in English by Charles Wesley in the 18 th century. 7 P a g e
8 Alleluia: a Hebrew word meaning praise the Lord, which appears in the New Testament as part of the grand victory celebrations in the Book of Revelation (Chapter 19). White: is the color for Easter s joyous celebration, although gold often accompanies white as the color for Easter Day and the following week. Easter Lily: Of course the Easter Lily is one of the most common signs of Easter with its heavy (funeral?) fragrance and trumpet-like appearance. This flower, shaped like the bell of a trumpet announcing victory, grows from a seemingly dead bulb which is buried in order for it to grow and bloom. Butterfly: The butterfly, emerging from its tomb-like cocoon, symbolizes Christ emerging from his empty tomb. The Easter (paschal) Lamb of God is now pictured, no longer in sacrificial death, but standing proudly with a victory banner. Jonah s near-death, underwater experience with a big fish is a parallel of our Lord s death and our own baptism. The crown is an Easter symbol that refers to our Lord, crowned as the triumphant Lord of life, and to the crown of life awaiting each of us. Other visual symbols come from the Easter Story itself the open tomb and the white cloths left behind by our risen Lord. The egg contains the new life of a chick within it, and its yoke is a symbol of the eternally rising sun. Easter Displays & Activities The Easter Vigil involves gathering on Holy Saturday at twilight or evening for a service involving a dozen Scripture readings that review the history of salvation from Creation through the resurrection of our Lord. It begins with the striking of new fire (often outdoors with which to light the new Christ Candle and, later, to light the worshipers candles, illuminating their way into the sanctuary as they sing. The new Christ Candle or Paschal Candle is lit for the first time at the Easter Vigil, marking the arrival of the Easter season. Its light, spread from its wick to the candles of all those attending the after-dark vigil, symbolizes the return of the Light of the World, our Lord, to life and to the Church. Baptism of children and adults at the Vigil is a wonderfully tangible symbol of Easter for each Christian. By baptism we are buried with Christ and raised with him to a new life. An important part of the ancient Easter Vigil was the baptism of new Christians, who then were to spend the Easter season exploring the implications of their new life in Christ. If you buried Alleluia! At the beginning of Lent, Easter is the day to resurrect Alleluia! This event deserves a brief rite, whether outdoors where a box has been buried, or at the altar, where a sign of symbol was hidden. If all this was done in connection with the children s sermon, the rite should be easy enough for both children and adults to partake. If a wooden cross has been standing in your sanctuary during Lent perhaps draped with violet for 6 weeks and with black on Good Friday on Easter Sunday it should be draped with white, symbolizing the empty grave clothes. Based on their recommendations, Trinity received $1,957 in DEAR TRINITY, I want to express my deepest gratitude for all you have done for me on this unexpected journey my life has taken. Secondly, thank you for all the cards sent to my home. They uplift me and left me know I m not alone on this walk. They mean a lot. And also, thank you for the prayer quilt. Many thanks for the prayers, cards, gifts, food, visits, and phone calls I received following my recent surgery. It is greatly appreciated. God bless you all. ~June Hakeman THANK YOU all so much for all the healing prayers and support through my recent health journey. I have been feeling better and am on the road towards recovery. 10 Trinity Lutheran Easter Flower Garden Easter 2016 is Sunday, March 27 th. If you wish to participate in our Easter Flower Garden, you have the choice of donating toward a flowering plant or purchasing a lily yourself. Please note that we have several members who have allergies to Easter lilies, so if you choose to purchase a lily, please consider an artificial lily versus an actual lily. If you wish to have yours donated to someone, please indicate that on the form below. If you wish to bring yours home, please pick it up immediately following the service. If you wish to participate, please let the office know. There are forms located in the Narthex. If you are unable to pick up a form, please leave a piece of paper with the following information: In memory of from OR to the glory of God from. Let us know if you wish to donate towards a shut in or if you will pick up following the service. Please also note if it will be a lily or a flowering plant. Completed forms may be placed in the offering plate, mailed to the church, or left under the office door. Donations toward flowering plants are needed by March 20 th (Palm Sunday) so that they can be ordered. You may give it to Jeanette Tuohino or Sharon Thue. If you are donating a Lily, you are asked to drop it off at the church on Saturday, March 26 th. Happiness Happiness the elusive quality that s easy to long for but difficult to pin down. In her lecture, Science of Happiness quoted on mentalfloss.com, evolutionary psychologist Nancy Etcoff discusses some of her happiness-related findings. 1. There s a great inequality in happiness around the world. Though it s a difficult reality to face, environmental factors significantly affect one s happiness. According to Etcoff, What we find is that circumstances mean a huge amount when people have very little. 2. Friends inspire more happiness than family members. It may not be surprising that the people around us influence our levels of happiness. However, Etcoff indicates that friends in particular are the people whose proximity makes us happiest. The presence of relatives is the second most likely social context to inspire happiness, followed by spouses. 3. Happiness has many positive side effects. Etcoff s research demonstrates that happiness correlates to longer life, greater productivity, higher earnings, and better citizenship. 4. Happier people are healthier people. Happiness and other positive emotions are beneficial to your health and these benefits are more powerful than the effects of depression and stress. 5. Happiness is contagious. We pass and receive emotions from those around us something to think about when interacting with others throughout the day. 10 P a g e
