2 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox, won their fourth World Series in the 21 st century. Baseball has been a part of my entire life as my father spent the bulk of his professional career as a minor league player, manager, major league coach and scout, spending time with St. Louis, Boston, New York both Yankees and Mets. My dad was a scout with the Mets in 1969 when they won the World Series and Gil Hodges was the manager. In 1972, Hodges died suddenly of a massive heart attack. Following his death, a commemorative lithograph was issued by the NY Mets organization (pictured on the back page). A copy of this hangs in my office. The reason it is there is not that I am a huge Gil Hodges fan, but rather because of a quote attributed to Hodges in the lower right hand corner during the 1969 season. It reads, BE FIRM BUT BE FAIR, AND BE IT TO THE NO. 25 MAN ON YOUR TEAM, JUST AS MUCH AS TO THE NO. 1 MAN. In other words, Hodges is saying that you have to treat the most valuable player on your team the same way you treat the most expendable player on your team. Treat the star just as you treat the utility player who pinches runs or the last pitcher out of the bullpen. Imagine no favoritism based on wealth, vocation, social status, race, religion, sexual orientation, natural origin, or any other reason. All of us being the same in the eyes of each other. All of us being the same in the eyes of God. I am not sure we will ever get there, but it would sure be a great thing to strive for in our sports and in our individual lives. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE RED SOX. Grace and Peace, Pastor Bob In the second chapter of James, we find these words, My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, Here s a good seat for you, but say to the poor man, You stand there or Sit on the floor by my feet, have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? (verses 1-4 NIV) I wonder what our sports teams would look like if we really lived out the words of Gil Hodges? I wonder what our world would be like if all of us followed the advice of the author of James?

3 We did it! We have exceeded our goal for Rise Against Hunger and are planning to package 11,000 meals on Sunday, November 18, at 3:00 p.m. Because of your faithfulness, Pastor Bob will have to keep his promise to shave his beard for the first time in thirty years. That will take place prior to the start of our packing event. This is a great opportunity to invite a friend, neighbor or family member to come and join you. The more the merrier. We will set up at 2:00 and hope to be finished with cleanup no later than 6:00 p.m. If you can t stay for the whole time, come for whatever period you can. Please go to to register for the event. This will help us to know how many people to expect. Hope you will plan to join us. The Rev. Tom Berlin will be in the District on November 8 to discuss the Commission on the Way Forward's report and more. During a Clergy Meeting from 1-3 pm at Heritage UMC (815 Baker Road), Tom will lead a discussion about the Commission on the Way Forward's report to the Council of Bishops. At 7 pm on November 8, laity and clergy are invited to An Evening with Tom Berlin to learn more about the called General Conference in February This event will be held at Heritage UMC (815 Baker Road, Virginia Beach). Rev. Tom Berlin is the Senior Pastor at Floris UMC, a member of the Virginia Delegation to General Conference, and served on the Commission on the Way Forward. Don t forget, Daylight Savings time ends this Sunday, November 4, Remember to set our clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday Night. Spring ahead, Fall back.

4 United Methodist Women Missions without Money = If you were walking down the street and saw a dime on the ground would you stoop down and pick it up? I don't know about you, but I would. SAVE THE DATES On September 26, 2017, Bishop Lewis, Tom Berlin, and Martha Stokes participated in a Q & A on the upcoming general Conference. In January 2019, we will take some time on three Mondays, January 7, 14, and 21 to view the archived event. Tom Berlin and Martha Stokes are both delegates to General Conference, Tom as a member of the clergy and Martha as a member of the laity. Each night we will watch a portion of the event and then have a time for discussion. I hope you will plan to attend. Warming Tree Watch for our "Warming Tree" in the Narthex. Help us fill it with hats, scarves, gloves, socks and coats. All items will be distributed to children in need in our local schools, HER Shelter and the Wesley Community Center. Well a dime, ten cents, is exactly what each of the Box Tops for Education is worth to schools. Twice a year schools submit the Box Tops and then receive a check for the total number of box tops submitted multiplied by $0.10. The schools can then use that money as they see fit. We have been collecting Box Tops for Georgetown Primary School in the past and will continue to do so. But this year let's set a goal of collecting one hundred or more Box Tops each month so that we can give the Georgetown the equivalent of $120 this year. We will begin counting and totaling our Box Tops submission in August. Don't throw them away, clip them and bring them to church and place them in the drawer in the cabinet in the narthex. Postage Stamps for UMCOR (United Methodist Council on Relief) Save your canceled postage stamps. The stamps are sold to a stamp collector and the proceeds are distributed through UMCOR. Stamps should be trimmed to a border no closer than ¼ inch around the outside edge. Do not peel the stamps from the envelope. Place them in the collection box in the narthex.

5 We are collecting food items to fill shopping bags which are given out to the families who come to the church seeking food gift cards. This food will be given out in lieu of cards. Below is a list of food to bring: (2 lb) Bags of rice Chunk chicken (12.5 oz) Vienna Sausages (4.5 oz cans) Applesauce (24 oz jar) (16 oz) Box of saltine crackers Spaghetti or Pasta (2 lb box) Green beans (small or large) Cans Peanut Butter (18 oz plastic jar) Spaghetti sauce (24 oz can or plastic jar) Messiah Preschool News Tuesday Morning Bib le Study We are currently discussing "I Love Growing Older but I'll Never Grow Old" by J. Ellsworth Kalas. We meet at the Great Bridge Panera Bread at 10 am. Our schedule for November is: Tuesday, November 6 Chapter 5 "Grow Old Along with Me" Tuesday, November 20 Chapter 6 "If All Those Endearing Young Charms" Please feel free to join us! Above: (Left) Field Trip to Hickory Ridge Farm and (Right) Firefighter Steve visits our preschool! We had a great time in October! The weather was great for Hickory Ridge Farm and Firefighter Steve is always a huge hit with the children. We also had our first chapel with Pastor Bob! In November, we will be focusing on friends and being thankful with our Friendship Feast and a Gratitude Brunch with 3 day 4 s class.

Nov 4 Lesson 1: Miriam Gives Thanks : Children will connect with the biblical story of the Hebrew people s escape from Egypt and Miriam s song of thanks. Activities: Bible story, p.130, Prayer Chains, Nov Prayer Calendar, Closing Worship. Nov 11 Lesson 2: One Leper Gives Thanks : Children will connect with the biblical story of the healing of the ten lepers. Activities: Read bible story, p. 140, Count to Ten, p 141 Make Grateful Cards, Thanksgiving Coloring Page, Closing Worship. Nov 18 Lesson 3: A Dance of Thanks : Children will connect with the biblical story of a man s thanksgiving after Peter healed the man. Activities: Bible story, p. 152 A Dance of Thanksgiving, Temple Maze p.154, Into Bible; Put the story in Order, Dancing Bible Verse Review, Closing Worship. Volunteers needed to teach the Children's Activities lessons. We are in need for someone to teach only on the 5th Sunday. Since there are only a few months that have 5 Sundays, you would only be teaching a lesson a few weeks during the year. The lessons are fully prepared and ready for you.
