2 A Mentor Moment: Hospitable Lydia - A Women Who Opened Her heart Purple dye came from secretions of a snail Acts 16: And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there. 14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. 15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay. So she persuaded us. We ve been focusing on Friendship this month in Mops, and I decided to use a Bible story about Lydia a woman who was known for her friendship to the apostle Paul. Background info: Lydia is the first documented Christian convert in Europe. She was from Asia minor, somewhere from around where Turkey is today. Also, our story takes place in Philippi, which is a colony of Rome. It was a busy city, but full of pagan and hedonistic practices. At the time, there weren t enough Jews in the town to support a synagogue (less than 10 Jewish men there!), If this doesn t seem significant to you, here s what this means: She was a foreigner from a place that the apostle Paul was forbidden to go (at least at that time). She s not Jewish so on Paul s first missionary journey, the first recorded conversion was a Gentile! The men weren t allowed to meet together outside of a synagogue, so the Jewish women would meet together to pray on the Sabbath. She was also a business woman financially secure (selling purple linens and with a household of servants). Most likely she was a widow, who had shared this business with her husband. The author of Acts says, she heard us. She was listening intently. At this time, she was already meeting with the women to pray to Yahweh, the One true God but she lacked understanding. Paul shares the Gospel message, and Lydia learns of Jesus and of His death on the cross. And her heart was captured by God! A transformation is immediately seen! She goes home, shares Jesus with her household, she and her household are baptized! Lydia then invites actually BEGS them to come stay with her! (In case you miss this point, it s not just Paul. It s Paul, Silas, Timothy and Luke and a caravan of travelers. She was inviting a large group of people to stay with her for an indefinite amount of time long enough for them to start the first church in Philippi!) The Point: Lydia was transformed by opening her heart to the Lord. Because of this, she had a significant role in the foundation of the first Christian church in Philippi! Truth in her heart came out in kindness to others. My question to you have you opened your heart to the Lord? And if so, have you allowed Him to transform your life? Romans 12: Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.
