1 Jackson County Ministries Mission Work Volunteers Commissioning Service LEADER: The time has come for you to go forth from this place as representatives of this congregation, but more importantly, as ambassadors for Jesus Christ. WORKERS: We are prepared to travel to Annville, Kentucky, where there is much work to be done. We intend to remind those with whom we work that we are their brothers and sisters in Christ, one in the spirit. ALL: (singing) We are one in the spirit, we are one in the Lord; We are one in the spirit, we are one in the Lord; and we pray that all unity may one day be restored; And they ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yes, they ll know we are Christians by our love. LEADER: The trip you are about to take is a journey shared by the entire congregation. Just as we have supported you throughout the year as you gathered the resources necessary to make this journey, we will continue to support you in prayer while you are gone and will look forward to hearing from each of you when you return. WORKERS: We are all very grateful for the support we have had from our congregation for this effort. While we are away, we promise to represent First Reformed Church, Sully with our best efforts. And, once we return, we will share the good news of our trip, confident that God will touch all of us through this experience. ALL: (singing) We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand; We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand; and together, we ll spread the news that God is in our land. And they ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yes, they ll know we are Christians by our love. LEADER: While you are away, you will be immersed in a culture entirely different from yours. The work may be as exhausting or tedious as it is fun and rewarding. What compels you to do this thing? WORKERS: We believe that our faith in God through Jesus Christ comes alive when we put that faith into action. We do this work not just because we are needed, but because our faith needs exercise. Having done this work in a far-away place, we plan to return more ready to work on God s behalf in our own families, church, and community. ALL: (singing) We will work with each other, we will work side by side; we will work with each other we will work side by side; and we ll guard each one s dignity and save each one s pride, And they ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yes, they ll know we are Christians by our love. LEADER: May God go with you and keep you safe. And may this offering we are making, together as a congregation, glorify God our creator, Jesus our redeemer, and the Holy Spirit, our constant companion. ALL: (singing) All praise the Creator, from who all things come; And all praise to Christ Jesus, God s only Son; And all praise to the Spirit who makes us one. And they ll know we are Christians by our love by our love. Yes, they ll know we are Christians by our love. July 15, :30 AM First Reformed Church, Sully Iowa Pastor Duane Laman

Delivered From Fear Psalm 34 Pastor Duane Laman 9:30 a.m. July 15, 2018 As Linus, in the Peanut's cartoon strip illustrated, many people have a fear of everything. There is much to be afraid of in this world, but Christians have an antidote to fear that allows us to face down our fears and find courage when anxiety grips our hearts. THOUGHTS FROM PSALM 34 written out of David's gratitude. - "I will bless the Lord at all times." (Vs. 1) --Because God had made him and saved him--as He has us. - "My soul will boast in the Lord." (Vs. 2) With David we proclaim the goodness of God. - "Glorify the Lord with me!" (Vs. 3) Together in community we take even more pleasure in God's gracious work. - "I sought the Lord and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears." (Vs. 4) Notice: "All!" --or we'd soon be fearful again. - "Those who look to Him are radiant." (Vs. 5) Because they trust Him and live above their fears. - "They called to the Lord. He heard them and saved them out of their troubles." (Vs. 6) The Lord has saved us and will save us. PRAYER: Lord, I know that when I feel afraid, you want to calm my heart. Yet, at this moment, I'm not at peace about. I know the enemy wants me to be consumed by this fear. But your Word reminds me that I can seek the Lord and He will answer me and deliver me from all my fears. Thank you Lord, that as I face down my fears, you are always with me. In Jesus' name. Amen. WHY IS OVERCOMING FEAR SO IMPORTANT FOR US? Because: (1) Fear paralyzes us. (2) Fear causes us to deny the providence of God. (3) Fear causes us to want to control everything before we step forward in faith--and we can't control it all. (4) Fear urges us to run away. WHAT CAN WE DO TO KEEP OUR FEARS FROM RUINING OUR LIVES? (1) Face our fears--as Jesus did. (2) Realize that when something bad does happen in our lives, we can go on. With David, let us seek the Lord, and He will answer us and deliver us from all our fears.
