Scripture: Revelation 3:7-13 Message: "7 Churches- Looking in the Mirror: Philadelphia " Facing Down an Unhealthy Fear of God Psalm 103 Pastor Duane Laman 9:30 a.m. August 19, 2018 Memory Text: "Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him." (Psalm 103:17) Many people fear God in the wrong way (Like Little Bobby). But we must begin by fearing the Lord. Proverbs 9:10 says: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom." God cares how we live, so we need to please Him. 1. WE DO NEED TO FEAR GOD--to have tremendous reverence & respect for Him. (Whether we like it or not, portrayals like "Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames show we can't ignore God without facing terrible consequences.) 2. DON'T STAY IN FEAR--GROW IN LOVE. John wrote: "There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment." 3. TWO WAYS FEAR CAN GROW INTO LOVE. A. Receive a true understanding of God's person and work from God's Word. We study Psalm 103 today. (1) Praise the Lord for all His benefits. (Vs. 2) Beginning with forgiveness and a new beginning. When we ask Him He always forgives our sins. (2) God is slow to anger and abounding in love. (Vs. 8) Illustrated by the unpredictable father who would hit his son without warning. Only when the son studied such verses did he come to see how different God is from his earthly father. (3) God doesn't hold grudges (Vs. 9) God doesn't harbor His anger. (4) Remember His great compassion for you (Vs. 13) Illustrated by the father of the 2 year old who had compassion when his son wrecked the room. (5) God remembers we are dust. We are weak like sheep without a shepherd. We come from a broken home. (Eden). Jesus understands our spiritual struggles and sympathizes. B. Release your painful experiences of abuse and disappointment to God. (1) Give them to Jesus who heals our diseases--including diseases of the heart. (2) Fear offending God who made us and loved us and blessed us in Christ. (3) Let your fear grow into a great love, so great you will not want to disappoint Him any more. CONCLUSION: We have probably all unconsciously formed some images of God which are inaccurate and unworthy of His name and glory. Pray that with God's help we can overcome any unhealthy fears of God and ever love Him more and more.
