2 Measuring Our Faithfulness: January 2018 General Rec d $65, Goal $71, Average Weekly Attendance Worship 423 Sunday School 210 Food Pantry Served Families Served = 86 Adults = 187 Children = 80 Bags given = 343 New Clients = 5 Eggs = 86 doz Meat = 430 lbs OUT OF MY MIND Tim Hughes, Senior Minister How curious are you about God, Jesus, and the Bible? How many times are you reading the Bible and something piques your curiosity and so you dive into a deeper study and read everything you can get your hands on about the subject? I read a little article recently about our brain s capacity to learn. Human brains weigh approximately 3.3 pounds and is only about the size of a softball. I say only but that s pretty big in comparison to our overall body size. The most amazing fact though is how much we are able to learn. Do you try to learn something new every day? Well you re never going to run out of brain space because your brain is capable of learning something new every second of every day for millions of years. You are unlimited in what you can learn about God and His creation and His plan for our lives. Leonardo da Vinci once made a comment that might remind you of something that Jesus said. Da Vinci said that the average human looks without seeing, listens without hearing, touches without feeling, eats without tasting, inhales without awareness of odor or fragrance, and talks without thinking. Da Vinci had one of the most inquiring minds ever. How eager are you to learn more about the things of God? What are you learning about God, Jesus, and the Bible? What are you learning about living the Christian life? What are you learning about how to resist temptation? What are you learning about being a better husband, wife, single person, child, parent? Writer Ralph B. Smith once made an observation that children ask roughly 125 questions per day and adults ask about six questions per day, so somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we lose 119 questions per day. The more questions we ask, or the more we research things that we wonder about, the more we learn. 5 Connections Ministry Over My Head and Under My Heart: Prayer I have talked to a lot of people about their faith over the years and the stories I get are about as different as the individuals I talk to, except when it comes to one area: prayer. It s funny because prayer is the one area where almost every person I talk to says they need to improve. Why is that? Why do we struggle with the one thing that gives us direct access to the God we love and worship? You d think that prayer would be the strongest aspect of our faith, but the truth is we all struggle with it to some degree. If we were to break down the reason why I would boil it down to fear. We re afraid to talk to God. Let that sink in. Many of us are afraid that when we come to God we ll be exposed for who we really are. Others are afraid that we ll be wasting God s time with our petty requests. Some are afraid that if we pray, He won t answer and then what do we do? We don t need to be afraid. God already knows who we are. There is no such thing as petty requests. God always answers, just not in the way we ever expect. Prayer is how we get to know God and how we come to trust Him more. Prayer is what strengthens us during difficult times and enlivens us when we are at our best. Prayer is where we understand God s love for us and it is our chance to let Him know how we feel. Embrace prayer. Larry Vinson Make it a part of your daily routine and never give it up. Hold on to it with your life and make the effort to talk to your Heavenly Father even when you don t feel up to the task. Need help? me at larry@cornerstonerock.org and I will send you a Bible Study that walks you through a biblical model on prayer. Remember, we re in this together. Let s do what is necessary to help each other deepen our faith. Children s Ministry Intern Victoria Swinton Hello! I m Victoria Swinton, the new intern. I just wanted to give some background on myself. I ve been attending Cornerstone since the summertime while church hopping. I knew from the first Sunday I attended a service that this was the church I wanted to start attending. About four months into attending I found out Cornerstone offered internships in the Children s Ministry, and thought this would be a great opportunity with God s blessing. I have always loved children, and I have been working at a daycare for 6 years. This internship gives a new perspective on working with children as well as helping myself and the kids I work with grow in their faith. The Rock / March 2018 Page 5 check for updates... 6 ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES nd Quarter, April June Combined Sunday School 4/1 Join us for a continental breakfast, a lesson, and great fellowship, as we kick off a new Sunday School Quarter in the multipurpose room. Classes Begin at 9:00 am DEAD THEOLOGIAN SOCIETY ORIGINS OF CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY Part 1 If you ever had to explain to someone (or yourself) how you could believe in the existence of God, or what God is like, or why do bad things happen to good people, you have used the thoughts and logic of medieval Christian philosophers. In part 1 of a two part series, we will explore the origins of many of the our present day explanations for such questions. In this quarter we will begin our discussions with the positions of St. Augustine, one of the most influential philosophers of Christendom and end with Peter Abelard, one of the bad boys of our faith. FAITH BUILDERS SPITITUAL DISCIPLINES A guide to a deeper relationship with God Like athletes training to maximize their physical abilities for competition, spiritual disciplines are exercises to help give Christians the strength to meet the challenges of life. The spiritual disciplines turn our hearts toward God and provide ways for God to deepen our relationship with Him. Join us this quarter as we learn more about using prayer, worship, stewardship, rest, and other tools to tap into the joy, peace, and strength that only God can provide. Classes Begin at 10:30 am HALAS SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES OF JESUS Not only did Jesus teach on spiritual disciplines, He lived then out as well. Join us as we learn from Jesus about the importance of spiritual disciplines and how we should practice them in our own lives. JOIN US STARTING APRIL 1! 9:00 am Dead Theologian Society (Room 212) Origins of Christian Philosophy Faith Builders (Room 214) Spiritual Disciplines 10:30 am Halas (Room 105) Spiritual Disciplines of Jesus Sonrise (Room 214) The Book of James SONRISE THE BOOK OF JAMES James says, It is not enough to talk the Christian faith; we must live it (James 2:14). Genuine faith inevitably produces good deeds. This quarter, Sonrise Class will examine James letter to first century Jewish Christians with its practical advice on living the Christian life.
