We are Following Jesus and Showing Others the Way. This has brought glory to our Savior and expanded the family of God. Through recent years we have seen needs arise as society and families have changed. Cornerstone s leadership has studied how to respond to those needs. As a result, the Elders and Staff are inviting the members and friends of Cornerstone to attend one of the informational meetings listed below. The meetings will last approximately one hour. These Cornerstone Community Meetings will be held as follows: April 4 at 10 am at Cornerstone (childcare available) April 6 at 7 pm Darren and Sasse Steele s 7940 Walker Cup Dr, Brownsburg April 8 at 11:45 am Cornerstone, following the second service (childcare available) April 11 at 7 pm Bob and Treva Leonard s 8822 Waterside Dr, Indianapolis Thes meetings are identical. Refreshments will be served. Please contact Paula Rader in the church office (Paula@CornerstoneRock.org) ( ) to sign up to attend a meeting, so we know how many to expect. You may also sign up on the Sunday Program tear-off. The Rock / April 2018 Page 1 check for updates... CornerstoneRock.org
2 Measuring Our Faithfulness: February 2018 General Rec d $70, Goal $71, Year to Date Rec d $136, Goal $143, Average Weekly Attendance Worship 353 Sunday School 175 Food Pantry Served Families Served = 95 Adults = 201 Children = 101 Bags given = 374 New Clients = 3 Eggs = 142 doz Meat = 610 lbs OUT OF MY MIND Tim Hughes, Senior Minister Earlier today I was reading an article about how church buildings have changed in recent times and the article was focused on the last 20 years. I thought, The last 20 years-- that hasn t been a very long period of time. How can church buildings have changed very much in 20 years? Then I began to think about how life has changed for children and their church attendance. No one used to think very much about security and children in the church building. No one used to think about someone wanting to harm children. We do now. With the breakup of families in America, children who used to attend the same church almost every Sunday, now they may attend only every other Sunday, if at all. People have changed, families have changed, and churches are changing. Years ago the emphasis was on the auditorium and the classrooms. The emphasis is still on the auditorium and classrooms but now the lobby is a much bigger factor in church life. People use the lobby space to socialize in between services a great deal more than in years past. Impromptu committee meetings, planning for home groups, and service projects are organized in the lobby. With our busy schedules we may not have time to fellowship with people during the work week but Sunday morning time with church family meets an important relational need. There are some things that must always stay the same in the Church of Jesus Christ. The gospel must always be preached and taught because the gospel is truth for all people and times. Jesus must be lifted up because He is the Way, the Truth and the Life and there is no way to the Father except through Him. The Bible must always be our standard for life and practice. Our Lord Jesus gives us a lot of freedom for how we make disciples and how we implement what he has taught us in His Word. There is no prescribed building plan for churches for all time. Anything from a grass hut or the shade of a tree to a massive cathedral can be used. However, if we want to reach people in the very best way in changing times we have to respond with the appropriate tools to communicate God s truth. Paul s words come to mind from 1 Corinthians 9:22 I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 4 ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES nd Quarter, April June Combined Sunday School 4/1 Join us for a continental breakfast, a lesson, and great fellowship, as we kick off a new Sunday School Quarter in the multipurpose room. Classes Begin at 9:00 am DEAD THEOLOGIAN SOCIETY ORIGINS OF CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY Part 1 If you ever had to explain to someone (or yourself) how you could believe in the existence of God, or what God is like, or why do bad things happen to good people, you have used the thoughts and logic of medieval Christian philosophers. In part 1 of a two part series, we will explore the origins of many of the our present day explanations for such questions. In this quarter we will begin our discussions with the positions of St. Augustine, one of the most influential philosophers of Christendom and end with Peter Abelard, one of the bad boys of our faith. FAITH BUILDERS SPITITUAL DISCIPLINES A guide to a deeper relationship with God Like athletes training to maximize their physical abilities for competition, spiritual disciplines are exercises to help give Christians the strength to meet the challenges of life. The spiritual disciplines turn our hearts toward God and provide ways for God to deepen our relationship with Him. Join us this quarter as we learn more about using prayer, worship, stewardship, rest, and other tools to tap into the joy, peace, and strength that only God can provide. Classes Begin at 10:30 am HALAS SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES OF JESUS Not only did Jesus teach on spiritual disciplines, He lived then out as well. Join us as we learn from Jesus about the importance of spiritual disciplines and how we should practice them in our own lives. JOIN US STARTING APRIL 1! 9:00 am Dead Theologian Society (Room 212) Origins of Christian Philosophy Faith Builders (Room 214) Spiritual Disciplines 10:30 am Halas (Room 105) Spiritual Disciplines of Jesus Sonrise (Room 214) The Book of James SONRISE THE BOOK OF JAMES James says, It is not enough to talk the Christian faith; we must live it (James 2:14). Genuine faith inevitably produces good deeds. This quarter, Sonrise Class will examine James letter to first century Jewish Christians with its practical advice on living the Christian life. 6 Connections Ministry Over My Head and Under My Heart: Fasting Since the beginning of the year we have been focusing on different spiritual disciplines so we can deepen our relationship to Christ. Thus far, we have talked about Studying God s Word and Prayer today we talk about a discipline that is not usually practiced within the lives of many Christians, but is crucial to the development of our faith. Do you fast or have you ever fasted? In case you don t know what that is, fasting is when we abstain from something for a period of time in order to fully concentrate on prayer. We usually think of staying away from food, and that is the normal way to fast; but in today s culture there are many different items that we can abstain from. If you are a coffee connoisseur like I am, try fasting from that and every time you would normally drink coffee, spend that time in prayer. Other suggestions, if Larry Vinson food doesn t work as an option, are tv, video games, social media, etc. So when should we fast? When we take a look at the Bible and the examples of fasting (David fasting to save his child for example) we see that fasting is a discipline used when we need to come to God for life-changing decisions. Thinking about a change of career? Fast about your options and seek God s desire for your life. Going through a difficult time and need God s encouragement more than ever? Fast and ask God to help you overcome this situation. As you experience God in your daily prayer life, you will know when He is calling you to fasting. Pay attention to the Spirit s leading to fast and carve out the time when He calls. As always, remember that we are all in this together! If you want to study this more, larry@cornerstonerock.org and I will send you a Bible Study on the topic.
