2 Measuring Our Faithfulness: January 2011 General Rec d $71, Goal $72, Average Weekly Attendance Worship 442 Sunday School 228 Food Pantry Served Families served = 124 Adults = 258 Children = 150 Bags given = 344 OUT OF MY MIND Tim Hughes, Senior Minister Two cousins, Harley and James, were in the soap making business and they were doing reasonably well selling bars of soap which they called "White Soap." One day, Clem, the man who oversaw the soap vats in the factory left for lunch and forgot to turn off the mixing machine. He returned to find that too much air had been mixed into the soap solution. Not wanting to waste the batch he poured it into hardening and cutting frames and hoped for the best. The bars of soap hardened just fine so they were packaged and sent to stores. Soon the factory was flooded with requests from people wanting more of the remarkable soap that floated and couldn't be lost in murky bath waters. When the cousins figured out what happened they asked Clem to whip every batch an extra-long time. They also made another change. "White Soap" just didn't seem to be an adequate name for such an innovative product. Harley was thinking about it in church one Sunday and he was impressed with a passage from Psalm 45:8 "All of thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia; out of the ivory palaces..." That was it. Harley Procter and James Gamble called their new product "Ivory." This is just another example of how some of the best things that happen to us in life happen when things go wrong or our plans have to be changed, or something unexpected happens. 1 Cor. 10:13 tells us, "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." Sometimes we think that this passage only has reference to sins in which we might be tempted to participate. However, the word translated, "temptation" here has a broader meaning. The Message translation of this passage reads, "No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face." The New English Bible says, "So far you have faced no trial..." This passage is giving us the encouraging truth that in any dead end or problem or temptation in life that we may encounter, God will help us find a solution. 3 Church Administrator David Keith Worship Arts Minister Collin Moneymaker Camp Allendale Update How can we be involved at Camp Allendale? I m glad you asked. Spring work days have been set. There are 5 Saturday s starting April 16 and running through May 21. Cornerstone s assignment is Watercraft Clean & Repair and this may be changed if necessary. Groups are encouraged to arrive between 8-9 am. Our project should take about 25 man hours. If Saturday s don t work for you and a weekday would be better for one or two of you, Randy said they have all kinds of small jobs to be completed before camp opens. It s not too early to begin talking to your in Home Bible Study group or your Sunday School class about signing up for a project. Your labor saves the Camp money; you have the opportunity to help Allendale remain a top notch facility; you can build some new friendships; and you won t leave hungry. Let me know which Saturday you want to select or contact Camp Allendale directly ( ). All Worship Team Meeting There will be an all team meeting held on Wednesday, March 16 at 6:00 pm in the auditorium. Regular worship team practice will take place after the meeting. All sound & audio engineers, vocalists, and musicians should attend this meeting. College & Young Adults If you are a college student or young adult, ages 18-35, and you are interested in connecting with other people your age at Cornerstone, sasses22@yahoo for more information about small groups, service projects, sports leagues, and more. Remember: Unless we reach their hearts today, they will break our hearts tomorrow! Way to go Men! The Cornerstone men brought home the 2011 Mileage Trophy last night. We had 8 men attend; the total attendance was 80 men representing 12 churches. The general offering was $841 and Southport Heights donated the meal money for a total offering of $1,158 for the camp. Brian Walls presented the work of Tear Down the Walls ministries. This is a homeless and urban outreach ministry. They need volunteers to help distribute food, hygiene and clothing items to people living on the streets. They need people to plan, cook or help serve meals at their weekly bible studies. There are opportunities for weekend mission trips and building projects. This is what the green board is all about. The purpose is to help us all be more green with our things. God tells us to be good stewards of what He has blessed us with. On one side of the board you will find what I am looking for and on the other what I am getting rid of. All you need to do is fill out a slip and pin it to the board. The idea is for all of us to recycle among ourselves. We can help each other save money and be kind to the planet too! As the unemployment rate remains stubbornly high, church and civic agencies providing food have seen a record number of people needing assistance. Hendricks County has not been immune from this need. While food pantries do a great job of providing food for the hungry, to feed the most people possible on tight budgets, pantries have to purchase cheaper, processed foods; high in fats, salts, and sugars. Cornerstone is starting a new ministry providing fresh vegetables to our Food Pantry and other food pantries here in Hendricks County. These healthy options will be grown here on church property and given out to those who come through our doors. Additionally, we ll be providing recipes to accompany the vegetables, as some may not know how to prepare them. Any extra vegetables harvested will go to other food pantries in Hendricks County and homeless shelters around Greater Indianapolis. We have two major planting days, one for cool weather crops in April, and one for warm weather crops in May. Then, throughout the summer, we ll need people to pick weeds, as well as pick ripe vegetables. Look for a sign-up sheet in the coming weeks if this sounds like something you want to be a part of. 7 COMMUNITY LIFE Women s Morning Bible Study A new Bible Study entitled, David: Developing a Heart for God, will meet on Wednesday mornings beginning March 2 at 10:00 am. This class is open to anyone interested in Bible study, prayer, and fellowship. Contact Martha Hughes ( ). S.A.M. s Fellowship - Sign Up sheets are in the lobby. Thursday, March 17: Lunch at Gray s in Mooresville. Thursday, April 21: Have you been to the Lord s Supper Museum? Plan on going with us. Ladies Hobby Night Do you like to scrapbook, bead, sew, crochet, or enjoy working on other types of hobbies? If so, come on over to Cornerstone s Hobby Night on the first Friday of each month. Bring a friend or come on over by yourself. It s a great time to catch up on your hobby, enjoy fellowship with other crafters, and to enjoy a fun night out. Meeting in March on Friday, 3/4 from 6-10 pm (or later) in the multipurpose room (enter through back doors on west side). Bring your hobby supplies, a snack to share, and an item for the pantry. Women s Conference: Inspire Take Time for Yourself! Join women from the west side of Indianapolis to refuel your faith, renew your mind, refresh your spirit and recharge your passion. The Conference begins at 9 am on Saturday, March 19 at the Hendricks 4-H Conference Complex and will conclude at 3:30 pm. Guest speaker will be Lisa Whelchel, Facts of Life, and the worship leader is Shelley Harris. The cost is $40 per ticket. Rick Jett from IDES will be the guest speaker. The Rock / March 2011 Page 7 Men Needed We have an opening for April on the master schedule for the Sunday Unlock/Lock Building Ministry. The church needs to be unlocked at 7 am on Sunday mornings and then locked up after the 2nd Service each Sunday. We have 3 men who can substitute for a Sunday, if you have other commitments during your month of service. Please contact Justin McKee or the church office. Leaky gutters, squeaky hinges, loose siding, change ceiling fans, hanging curtain rods, leaky faucets, plumbing fixtures, sealing windows: these are all things that have been fixed by our Healthy House Ministry for members that need a helping hand. Anyone who feels they need assistance with some maintenance or repair can give us a call at the church office. We have a crew of Cornerstone volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to evaluate what you need and do the work. You pay only for the materials. CD s of Sermons are Available... Online! If you would like a copy made, please complete a yellow card and the requested copies are available the next week at the Welcome Desk.
