I don t know how many of you thought about the famous line from Shakespeare Beware the Ides of March or how many of you thought of Julius Caesar, who was assassinated on the Ides of March. The Ides of March has been known in history as a fateful day. We are approaching the Easter Season with Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday only about three weeks away. March is a time of year when Hoosiers have a hard time breaking away from basketball. It s the time of year when we are getting into our yard work and checking out our air conditioners. At some point, hopefully, we are pausing to reflect on the life and death and resurrection of our best friend, older brother, Savior, and Lord, Jesus Christ. Immediately after Peter s confession of faith that Jesus was the Christ Jesus began to openly teach the disciples about the concluding events of his earthly life. Mark 8:31 says, He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. This prediction was made about a year before those actual events. Other predictions would follow. The disciples were slow to comprehend this. Jesus was to die and his death would be the most meaningful death in history. Jesus had set his sights on the cross. His disciples were barely listening. Are we listening? Human beings are so unlike Jesus in our death. Jesus willingly laid down his life, it was not taken from him. Jesus died for a purpose like no other. Jesus death occurred exactly as he predicted and accomplished what he intended to accomplish. Jesus death The Rock / April 2012 Page 2 is completely unique when compared to other famous deaths. Simon Critchley has written about the deaths of some of history s most famous philosophers: Thomas Hobbes, who wrote that life is nasty, brutish, and short, died peacefully in bed at the ripe old age of 91. Hegel died in a cholera epidemic. His last words were: Only one man understood me and he didn t understand me (presumably referring to himself). Roland Barthes was hit by a dry cleaning van. Jean-Paul Sartre seemed to have a change of heart: prior to his death, this long-time atheist said, I do not feel that I am the product of chance. [but] a being whom only a Creator could put here. Albert Camus once said that he couldn t imagine a death more meaningless than dying in a car accident. In 1960, at the age of 47, Camus died in a car accident. A. J. Ayer, a resolute atheist, choked on a piece of salmon, and technically died. Later he said that this neardeath experience provided strong evidence that death does not end consciousness. His wife reported, Freddie has got so much nicer since he died. Ayer died for good a year later. Despite the variety of ways to die, Critchley uses a quote from Epicurus to highlight the certainty of death: Against all other things it is possible to obtain security, but when it comes to death we human beings live in an unwalled city. Yes, death has access to us, of that there is no doubt. But Jesus Christ has won the victory over death and the grave cannot hold us.
3 Church Administrator David Keith Men of Cornerstone Christian Church The eldership is in the process of seeking out men of our congregation who have the desire to be an elder. Has God touched your heart to serve? Are you at the place in your Christian Walk where you would like to help provide vision and direction to Cornerstone at this exciting time when we are seeking to follow Jesus and show others the way? If the Lord s spirit is prompting you in this direction and you d like to know more about the role and work of an elder please contact Chas LaPierre or any of the other current elders on or before April 8. Camp Allendale Update Randy just sent an quarterly report. In 3 short weeks Camp Registration has exploded. Currently, 2260 children have signed up. 76% of the full week beds are filled! Wow! 6 Connecting to Cornerstone Teacher: Chas LaPierre A new class will be announced. This class will include the elements of fellowship, Bible exploration, and discussion. The focus will be on what God has said to us in the Bible and how we can take action on that truth in today s world. Anyone may attend this new class; however, the class is designed for those who are new to Cornerstone. This class could help you develop the faith you desire, invigorate a faith you already have, or define how you want to grow and serve. You may join this class at any time. Each of the ten sessions is self-contained. The sessions will be repeated throughout the year, so, if you miss a session, you can pick it up the next time the series is presented. Home Builders Teachers: Kevin Bayless, Scott Curtis, Tom Dillow Christian Character (Begins 9 in room 214) What is it? How do we get it and what does it look like? What does it mean to follow Christ? Are we the same person on Monday as we were on Sunday? What does Christian Character look like and how do we live our faith? What does the Bible say about compassion, humility, faith, perseverance, and truth? These are some of the questions we will tackle during this quarter s study. Join us at 9:00 am when we study what God has to say about the character He expects from all of us. Pathfinders Teachers: Scott Keller, Jeff Utterback Apologetic s and Defending Your Faith (Begins 9 in room 212) The spiritual questions you and your friends ask---about God, the credibility of the Bible, angels, heaven and hell, and even worship and prayer---are important. In fact, understanding your faith depends on finding answers to those questions, answers that work in the real world and that make sense in real conversations. Young Adults Teacher: Scott Chambers, Mike Hall The Parables of Jesus (Begins 9 in room 215) Jesus made extensive use of parables, or short stories, to teach his followers about Kingdom truths. Many of these parables deal with concepts that are timeless in helping us understand our role and responsibility as disciples. If you are under 35 and are looking for a Sunday School class we invite you to join us at 9 am as we study the major parables of Jesus and how we can apply them to our lives today. Halas Teacher: Steve Matthews Cornerstone Doctrine (Begins 10:30 in room 105) This quarter the Halas Class will be studying the basic doctrinal statements of Cornerstone Christian Church. Our doctrine identifies and sets forth the basic biblical beliefs we hold dear to our Christian faith. Our basic doctrine outlines what we at Cornerstone believe about the Bible, God, Jesus, salvation, and the origin of all things. This doctrine is the basis of what is taught in our worship and Sunday School. Philia Teacher: Bill Estes The Book of Acts (Begins 10:30 in room 210) We will be studying the book of Acts in the New Testament. It traces the growth of early church. It begins with the ascension of Jesus and concludes with Paul in Rome during his first imprisonment. In between we study the beginning of the church, the early persecution of the it, the conversion of Saul of Tarsus and Cornelius, the three missionary journeys of Paul, the arrest of Paul and his journey of Paul to Rome. Sonrise everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. Luke 6:40 Teachers: Dave Blanford, Walt Brown John: The Gospel that is Different (Begins 10:30 in room 214) We will continue this study and reveal how different the fourth gospel is from the other three. It omits many things they include, such as accounts of Jesus birth, baptism, temptations, parables and ascension, while containing many things the others don t mention. For example, in John we find details about Jesus early ministry and insights into the personalities of some of the disciples. It s a beautiful book that gives us extra little details about all three years of Christ s ministry; it reads like memories of one who was there. The Rock / April 2012 Page 6

This year the lunch bunch meets every Tuesday from June 5 thru July 31. Kids from the Brownsburg area come to the Town Hall Flag Pole for food, fun, and a book to take home. This program is structured for children ages 1 to 11. We need picture books for the one through 5 years of age group and chapter books for the children ages 6 through 11. If we average 300 children for the 8 weeks, we will consume 2,400 books. Cornerstone was a major contributor last year. Ask your children if they have a book they want to donate. We will have a collection box in the lobby beginning April thru July. The Rock / April 2012 Page 7
8 Cornerstone Mission in Focus Rapha Restoration Ministries Isaiah 61:1-3 By Karen Jones, team leader Periodical # Non Profit Postage Paid at Brownsburg, IN Brent Miller was ordained as a minister October 25, He is a certified ministry leader with Intimate Life Ministries as well as with Family Dynamics Institute of Nashville, TN. Barb Miller is a licensed clinical social worker; MSW. She is also certified in Relational Ministry with Intimate Life Ministries and is trained to facilitate with Marriage Dynamics Ministries. Brent and Barb have led many marriage conferences and continue to teach and mentor as they seek to grow in their relationships with God and their spouses. Brent and Barb began their ministry in 1996 after attending a marriage seminar by Great Commandments Ministry. God placed a great burden on their hearts to help people heal their marriages. In 2004, Brent and Barb became missionaries to marriage and Rapha Restoration Ministry was formed to bring restoration, healing and relief of distress to marriages and families; including those experiencing financial stress and who would otherwise have no access to such help. The Millers want to help bring reconciliation through Jesus Christ and the power of God s word. They explore God s design for marriage and family and seek God s unique purpose for their lives. Through Rapha, the Miller s provide Biblically-based classes, retreats, counseling, crisis relief, mentoring, equipping, training and intensive care. The Rapha Cottage, located across from Trader s Point Creamery, will be available for three to four day interventions to provide comfort, rest, renewal, intensive counseling and a personalized treatment plan for couples who feel they have lost hope for reconciliation. These couples will receive continued support through counseling with Brent and Barb and a mentoring couple. Currently these interventions are meeting at another location until the Administrative addition is connected to the Rapha Cottage.
