Goals & Objectives The primary goals and objectives of the Four Corners Native American Ministry include: Background/ History The Four Corners Native American Ministry, a Navajo Cooperative Parish of the New Mexico Annual Conference, oversees the United Methodist presence on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. The ministry, based in Shiprock, New Mexico, consists of 7 chartered churches, 18 outreach congregations, a thrift shop, a day care and a Covenant Education Center. The ministry's current priorities are strengthening its chartered churches and raising seminary-trained Navajo leadership. A history of the United Methodist's interaction with the Navajo, particularly focusing on the history of the Four Corners Ministry, which began in 1977, has been written up in a full-length book, Four Corners: Where the Holy Spirit Touches Navajo Hearts (2007) by Stan Sager. 1. Strengthening our chartered churches. The ministry currently consists of 25 congregations, of which 7 are chartered United Methodist churches. Our primary goals is developing these chartered churches, which need significant financial and administrative support. 2. Credentialing Navajo church leaders. Our immediate priority is identifying Navajo leaders for candidacy as ministers in the United Methodist Church. We look to send 2-5 Navajos to seminary and course of study in the next few years. 3. Congregational training. We are using the Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations and the Basic Lay Speakers Course in our leadership training program, which meets throughout the year. The people of St. Andrew have been called by God to embrace, equip and

Looking to the Future ~by Wayne Spray "As we look to the future, we must also keep in mind our purpose as a church, which is to help people develop a meaningful life in relationship to God through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. We must recognize that without the guidance of the Holy Spirit an individual will almost certainly come to frustration, lack of purpose, and despair. A meaningful life may be achieved only through following the teachings and examples of Christ. To achieve our purpose, some goals are necessary. It is these goals around which the total program of the church must function: 1. We must help people find and commit themselves to Christ. 2. We must interpret and help people understand how the Judeo-Christian message may apply as a guide to a personal lifestyle. 3. We must help people examine the elements in society which interfere with or enhance a Christian lifestyle. 4. We must provide a nurturing community in which people can develop as Christians. 5. We must help people accept others as children of God. 6. We must expand the outreach of the church including ministry and membership. All the programs and activities of St. Andrew must be designed with our purpose and these goals in mind. We have many and varied ministries in our program already. There are many others that might be started. We must continue to develop new programs. Stagnation will mean our death as a church. We are not limited by building space, capabilities, expertise or finances. We are only limited by the extent of our personal dedication and commitment to Jesus Christ and His Church. With renewed dedication through our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service, St. Andrew can and will move on into the future with a vital and meaningful ministry, giving to God the praise and the glory. May our worship be the source of strength for ministry and mission in the name of Christ. Let us rededicate ourselves today to Jesus Christ and to active ministry in His name. Let us make St. Andrew a church that is continually moving forward, so that all people may come to know the Good News of Jesus Christ." (The above article was written by Wayne over 20 years ago and was shared on Older Adult Recognition Sunday) Once a year the Administrative Council and interested members of the congregation focus solely on the ministry of the church. As we did that on Saturday, July 21, we began to form a list of goals and ideas for the program year. These, along with ongoing and yet-to-be-met past goals, will be mailed out to the congregation and also printed in the October Footprints. The Council welcomes your constructive, prayerfully-reached comments and ideas to help the church make progress on meeting its goal of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Unleashing Ourselves for Ministry My hope is that we will have a draft of the goal document ready to be reviewed by the Council at its 7:00 PM August 21 meeting (because of vacations, not the normal first Tuesday) to make sure nothing has been left out. As soon as any additions or corrections have been made, the document will be mailed. Please be timely with your responses. They will be made available to all Council members. At our October 2 meeting, following discussion and consideration of the responses received, the Council members will decide on the goals and vote for their approval for the coming year. You can leave written comments at mwsedlacek@gmail.com or in the Administrative Council mailbox in the office. My phone number is As St. Andrew UMC we are privileged by God to partner with Him in spreading the Gospel and meeting the needs of the people He created. Thanks be to Him. 5 Methodists Get Kudos in Malaria Fight Rear Adm. Tim Ziemer, the U.S. government s global malaria coordinator, praised The United Methodist Church as a critical partner in the fight against malaria. By raising funds and distributing mosquito nets, the denomination has helped save an estimated 200,000 lives a year, Ziemer said in a recent address to General Conference 2012, the church s top legislative body. In another step forward, UMCOR is forming a strategic partnership with Episcopal Relief and Development to prevent and control malaria. Together, the two agencies expect to reach 21 countries in sub-saharan Africa where malaria is endemic. Donate to the UMC s Imagine No Malaria campaign at imaginenomalaria.org or by mailing a check to UMC Imagine No Malaria PO Box Nashville, TN News From the Wesley Community Center Pastor John recently visited the Wesley Center and met with their new Executive Director, Mr. Harris K. Tay. After touring the center it s apparent that this vital ministry is moving forward serving the people. There are some changes to the larger gymnasium space which will allow for more focused youth ministry and activities. With that change the food pantry area is being reorganized and will provide people with more of a shopping experience. There is a gathering space they have which they hope to transform into a coffee house environment. The community gardens that Wesley Center makes available to the community is thriving. Individuals have planted their own garden spaces, and there is a large area which the Wesley Center is growing to provide fresh vegetable to area residents. I think it s also important to note that our own Marjorie Craver has joined the Board of Trustees of the Wesley Center. Marjorie brings a wealth of professional experience and a passion for the ministry at Wesley. We are all grateful for her willingness to serve. Our mission partnership with the Wesley Center provides them with budgeted financial support, monthly red wagon food offerings, Martha s Closet which provides gently used clothing and household goods, Thanksgiving food offering, Christmas Adopt-a-Family, back to school supplies, and our responsiveness to special appeals. There is also a fellowship group called the Wesley / St. Andrew Fellowship Group. The Wesley center holds a special place in our hearts and we are thankful for the opportunities to be in ministry with them. Mr. Tay shares this We greatly appreciate your ongoing support for Wesley Community Center. Our Summer Day Camp program is serving 30-plus elementary age children on Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It s been a very hot summer, but our children have enjoyed cool activities, recreation, and an opportunity to work with our senior citizens in an Inter-generational Community Garden. The Ohio State University Extension Service has offered their expertise, time, and resources to install a drip irrigation system in the community garden. Both the seniors and children have learned a lot about growing healthy nutritious food. At the same time our other programs such as employment development, support for adult men and women, senior nutrition and transportation programs, as well as emergency assistance of food and clothing, continue. You are making a difference in the lives of so many in our community. We would invite you to come by the Center to see much of what is happening. May God s blessings continue to be abundant in your life. Harris K. Tay, Executive Director. The Wesley Center is located at 3730 Delphos Ave, Dayton, Ohio , Phone Page 5

GOOD FOOD + GOOD FUN + GOOD FELLOWSHIP = DINNERS FOR SEVEN OR EIGHT New members and adults of all ages will find that this small group experience is a wonderful way to get to know our fellow church members better and improve communications by sharing a meal at home or going Dutch at a favorite restaurant. Dinner groups, comprised of seven or eight individuals (couples & single adults), are assigned. Individuals and couples in the groups will take turns hosting dinner either in their homes or choosing a restaurant once each over a six month period. Debt Freedom is Within Our Reach We are truly a blessed congregation! The Finance Committee always gets a collective smile on their faces when we report positive news. As of June 30, 2012 we are on budget for our expected six months financial results and we are off to a strong start for our Debt Free in Five Years campaign to retire our building debt by June, Here are some highlights: At June 30, pledges are almost on budget, We have collected $168,455 versus our budget of $171,849. Our budget for the entire year is $331,850, so we are 50.1% of the way. We have some savings in our expense budget with $159,118 spent so far versus our budget of $162,575. The six month results put us right at our income over expense amount of $9,419 versus a budgeted amount of $9,5255. The Finance Committee would like to express its thanks to all of our congregation members for your help in being good stewards of what God has so generously given to us. The plan to be debt free in five years is off to a If the host individual or couple is entertaining at home, they will provide the main course and decide upon the evening s activity (i.e. game, discussions, etc.) The other individuals in the group provide side dishes and dessert. If eating out, the host will decide where the group will go (expenses by separate bills). Individuals and couples are assigned to different dinner groups each six months. Sign up in the Atrium by Sunday, Sept. 9th for the next 6 months of dinners to begin in October or Call Marcy or Chuck Lauersdorf at great start. We have been in discussions with several financial institutions, and we are pleased to report we have reached a tentative agreement with JPMorgan (our current debt holder) on terms to refinance the current loan. We intend to pay down the current loan with Building Fund cash and several contributions made up front. The new loan will be for $225,000. The interest rate should be below 3.9% for a term of 5 years. Our projections show that if we can raise $250,000 in pledges over five years, we can pay down the entire loan by June, As of July 22, 2012 we have five year commitments for just over $225,000. We hope we can exceed that amount so we can begin to build a capital fund for repairs or special purposes. We are following up with members we have not heard from yet, so if you have not turned in a pledge card for this exciting program, please prayerfully consider how you might help. God is truly good, and we are thankful He has given us opportunities and resources to help meet St. Andrew s mission and goals. Thanks to the congregation for all you do! Finance Committee July, 2012 Art Explorer's Club - Continuing the Fun! Once again Wednesday evenings will find children, 1st grade and up, gathering in the Art Room to explore art in its many and varied forms. We will paint, paste, bend, fold, stitch, draw, mold and have fun while we work. We begin at 6:30 p.m., after supper and close in prayer at 8:00 p.m. We are asking parents to fill out a sign-up sheet for their children. It will help us get acquainted with each other more quickly. The opportunity to help direct activities is always open. If you have an exciting idea or new project come and teach us all! Questions: call Susan White at Page 6

Memorial Bricks I will be taking orders for bricks for the memorial garden until the middle of September. 4x8 bricks are $25.00 and 8x8 bricks are $ Order forms are outside of the Gathering Grounds or in the church office. Call me if you have questions. Diane Hutton Memorial Committee Report Rose bushes and perennial salvia were planted in the brick planter in front of the stained glass window. The plantings are in memory of Katherine Sedlacek, Jerry s mother. The Memorial Committee would like to thank Jerry, Marge and everyone who made this memorial possible. Martha's Closet Jerry Sedlacek The need for food at the Wesley Center continues to exceed the food available to distribute. We will continue our food collection in August. The red wagon will be placed in the Atrium on the first Sunday, 8/5, as a reminder of our food collection on the second Sunday, 8/12. Dry beans, noodles, spaghetti, and pork & beans are the foods most needed. Cash is also needed as the Wesley Center can use it to purchase needed items at reduced cost. Make checks payable to St. Andrew UMC noting that the gift is for the Wesley Center food program. Back to School Supplies Going back to school is always an exciting time for children. We re hoping to help some students that need supplies to get off to a great start this school year. Posted in the atrium are lists of needed supplies for Fairbrook students and for the Wesley Community Center. Please bring supplies before August 12. We need lots of little things this year and hope that we can all help. If you would prefer not to shop, we would welcome financial donations. Make your check out to St. Andrew and mark it for school donations. Contact Karen Spencer ( ) or Sharon Baxter ( ) for more information. STARS AUGUST 15 Mark your calendar now as our outing comes early in the month. We will meet on August 15 at 9:30 at the church to car pool to Carillon Park. The indoor exhibits have been greatly expanded since our last visit, so we will confine this visit to the fully handicapped accessible displays inside. We might even ride the Carousel! Once again we will learn about many of the inventions from Dayton, and we will view displays supplied from local corporations. The cost of the unguided tour is $7.00 for seniors. If any of you have grandchildren living near or visiting you at that time, it would be a great tour for them also. The charge for children from 3 to 17 is $5.00. At 11:30, we will wander over to Culps for lunch. They will be expecting us, but we will not have one large table reserved. For more information, call Flo Craig at Fun! Fashion! Food! All Women are Invited!! UMW PICNIC AUGUST 9 Save the date NOW, because you will not want to miss this fun night of fashion, friendships, and food. Our annual picnic, chaired by the Koinonia Circle, scheduled on August 9 at 6:30, will be a carry- in as usual. Our hostess circle will furnish meat, drinks, and table service. Watch the UMW bulletin board for a sign up sheet, and let us know you will join us. Following dinner, we will be entertained by our own UMW models showing off fall fashions from CJ Banks and Christopher Banks. Questions? Call Diane Hutton at Page 7

Wings of the Morning St. Andrew United Methodist Church is in a Missionary Partnership with Gaston Ntambo, and additionally supports the overall Wings of the Morning ministry. This is an aviation ministry in an area of Africa where 6 million people live with no roads for transportation. Hope comes in the form of a small airplane and a pilot who evacuates critically ill and injured villagers to health care facilities, and flies in medical supplies, bibles, payrolls, pastors, and mission teams. Wings of the Morning provides... the gift of life to those who are critically ill or injured. the gift of eternal life by bringing Bibles, pastors, and new church starts to remote areas of North Katanga. A miracle happened at annual conference together you gave or pledged during the week at Lakeside an incredible $1,024,254 to the Wings of the Morning Caravan Campaign! Added to the total previously given or pledged to the campaign, your generosity and faithfulness will provide enough money for the purchase of a new Cessna Caravan airplane for Wings of the Morning. Following is a personal thank you letter from Gaston Ntambo, the Wings of the Morning pilot: Dear West Ohio United Methodists, Our deepest gratitude to you and the church! You have just opened the biggest door for mission work and for a country, maybe even countries to come to know and seek the face of our Lord Jesus, and thank you is not the words I am looking for. It is not enough! I am very proud of my United Methodist church for I have seen a commitment and a sacrificial giving that has gone from your bishop, to a church member who owned a barber shop and said "Gaston my very next hair cut, the money will go toward buying you a new airplane." I have seen a fundraising that has gone from Wings for Wings to noisy Sunday fundraising. We will honor all your sacrifices by using this airplane effectively as a tool in North Katanga, Tanganyika and Tanzania Annual Conferences, to reach out and spread the good news and the love of our Lord Jesus Christ together. Now we have a perfect tool that we can use to reduce malaria victims. A child does not have to die every 60 seconds from malaria. We are happy and encouraged to partner with the program Imagine No Malaria all because of your support and because we now have the necessary equipment. In conclusion, you touched and changed my life with your mission work when you sent me my very first pair of shoes at 9 years of age. Today you are sending me home with a perfect airplane to go and make a difference for our people. Thank you for believing in us and for saving North Katanga Wings of the Morning flight ministry. I am proud of my United Methodist Church and our God is an awesome God and he is on the throne because I never thought in all my life that I could ever say that I am going shopping for an airplane, but here we go! Gaston Ntambo; Wings of the Morning Pilot. August 26: Stepping Outside in Worship & Fellowship Celebrate God s creation and our unity in Christ as we gather at 10:30 in the church s backyard for worship and a picnic following. For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies; For the love which from our birth, over and around us lies; Lord of all, to Thee we raise this, our hymn of grateful praise. For the wonder of each hour, of the day and of the night; Hill and vale and tree and flow'r, sun and moon, and stars of light; Lord of all, to Thee we raise this, our hymn of grateful praise. --Folliott S. 9 Target Dayton - An Opportunity to Serve As Christians we are not only encouraged to serve as the Body of Christ, we are held accountable to serve as His hands and feet. The Esther Circle recently volunteered our time to serve at Target Dayton. Target Dayton is a church located at 111 Xenia Avenue in Dayton that serves the poor and homeless in Dayton's inner city. The opportunity to serve included participating in an evangelistic worship service by Pastor Mark Stevens, who along with his wife Cindi has provided countless worship opportunities and served over 50,000 meals to the homeless since their opening the doors in We were amazed at how clean and inviting the cafeteria area was and after worship, we joined other volunteers to serve dinner to 160 homeless people who were treated with respect and dignity. Target Dayton is truly a mission that feeds the soul and feeds the hungry! What did this mission outreach mean to the Esther Circle members? Serving at Target Dayton provided me "an eye-opening view of poverty, suffering, and hunger that is very nearby, reminded me that the purpose of life is to help others, and affirmed that in one afternoon I could make a difference in someone's life."... "with the opportunity to move a little outside my comfort zone and to make contact with and serve fellow human beings who are less fortunate than myself."... "the opportunity to remain connected to things that really matter to most people in the world...food, shelter and companionship."... "The Esther Circle was formed to step outside our comfort zone to serve the community. Esther was told by Mordecai "that saving her people by petitioning the king might be her destiny". On the two occasions that I stepped out of my comfort zone to serve the community the blessing that were returned to me encourages me to step out and help others again." Wind in the Woods Early Music Ensemble will be providing music for the 11 o clock service on Sunday August 19. I thought you might like to have some information about us and our music. We specialize in medieval, renaissance and baroque music. For the prelude and postlude we will play music by the German composer Michael Praetorius ( ), a Lutheran, who wrote for the church but also produced a collection of dance tunes. We will play two of these dances; a peaceful and lyrical Ballet and a joyful Bouree. Our offertory music will be an English Anthem by Thomas Tallis (c ) If ye love me, keep my commandments. Tallis worked as a composer and Gentleman of the Chapel Royal for Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I and with each reign had to change his religious affiliation. For Ministry of Music, we will play Martin Luther s great hymn A Mighty Fortress is our God. Many versions of Luther s music exist, and we will begin with one by his contemporary, Johannes Walter, ( ). This will be followed by J.S. Bach s harmonization of Luther s melody, and finally we will add a descant part by Thurlow Weed ( ) We will use renaissance instruments that include soprano, alto, tenor and bass recorders. We ll also use violas da gamba, bowed instruments that are related to the guitar, and have six strings and frets like the guitar. There will also be a bass gemshorn (it looks like a large animal horn) and a curtal, which is a precursor of the bassoon. Lawrence Pitzer will be palying the lute, and his particular instrument has 7 pairs of strings plus a single string 15 in all! You can read more about Wind in the Woods at Margaret Erin. Page 9
