1 S T. A N D R E W U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H Volume 15 Issue 5 May 2015 Imagine No Malaria: May Is a Month to Save Lives I think this is one of the most exciting times of the year. We re benefiting from those April showers with the beautiful flowers blooming all around us. The magnificence of God s creation is awe inspiring. Then there is that feeling of anticipation in the air. Several of our members will be graduating from both high school and college this year, the turning of yet another page in the journey. A very important part of our church year is The West Ohio Annual Conference. This year Paul Bales, Elwin & Ivy Spray, and I will travel to Lakeside, Ohio to represent the church. It s shaping up to be a busy and blessed week. This is the third year of our four-year series on being Christ s Beloved: Taken, Blessed, Broken and Given. Voting will also take place for the election of representatives to the General and Jurisdictional Conferences. An additional item is we will join together with all of the other churches of the West Ohio Annual Conference to work towards the fulfillment of our Imagine No Malaria pledge. St. Andrew set our pledge at $3,000.00, and thus far have paid $2, Our focus for the month of May will be the Imagine No Malaria campaign. Sunday, May 3 rd we will observe a special Sunday, A Sunday to Save Lives. On this day we will have words from Pastor John informational displays as well as the opportunity to receive a one of a kind piece of art made by the children of St. Andrew for every donation. We will continue the giving drive through the month with the goal of completeing our pledge. Our hope and prayer is that with only a thousand dollars to go we not only meet our goal, but exceed it. Just stop for a moment and think, for each $10.00 that we contribute, one net is provided and one life is saved. Once completed, St. Andrew will have sent 300 or more nets, and saved as many lives. Isn t it amazing being a part of a conference that stretches from the northwest corner of the state in Bryan, Ohio all the way through Columbus, down to Marietta, Ohio, then along the Ohio River to Cincinnati and up the state line back to Bryan. It s nearly two thirds of the state, with some 1,030 United Methodist churches and 175,774 members. The goal for our Annual Conference was set at 3.5 million dollars. Translated into lives saved. 350,000 people. I m thankful that we are part of a connectional church that makes such an importance difference in the world. I invite you to join with me in shattering our goal. Thank you for everything that you do. May God continue to bless us together that we may be a wonderful blessing throughout the world. In Ministry With You Pastor John The people of St. Andrew have been called by God to embrace, equip and encourage persons of all ages to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. e 3

Contact Jan Garrett Prayer requests can be made at the Atrium prayer box, or by contacting the church office. Every week, a group of people pray for the needs of our members, our church, our community, our country and world. remember where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them - Matthew 18:20 Care and Prayer How can we say thanks for the things you have done for us? Things so undeserved, yet you did to prove your love for us. You have fed us physically and spiritually. You have taught us, challenged us, encouraged us and given us space to find ourselves. And in the past six months you have comforted us body and soul. The voices of a million angels cannot express our gratitude! Thank you. Peggy (Watts) Jeffries and Edd Watts Our sympathy goes out to the Jane Henry, on the passing of her mother. Please keep her in your prayers. Our family recently attended the thesis/art show of my granddaughter Clarice Mueller-Johnson. Clarice will graduate next fall from Athens University. She is majoring in Art and Psychology, hoping to earn a graduate degree and teach art therapy. Some of you will remember she sang in the Adult Choir a few years ago. Georgia Johnson Thank You Mission Note, Susan White and I recently had the pleasure of delivering approximately 35 pounds of seeds to Jackson for the Seed Ministry. It is with a grateful heart that I thank each of you who purchased seeds to support this important ministry outreach. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated. Chris Watters Thank you notes were received on behalf of our donations to Wesley Center, and North Katanga Wings of the Morning. The notes are available on the office bulletin board for more information. Dear Friends, Thank you for your special delivery of vegetable seeds to the Gardening Program of Jackson Area Ministries. Without gifts such as yours we would not be able to help over 3,ooo families in southeast Ohio raise their own fresh produce. We have had a busy week here with three groups of ladies helping with the sorting and counting of seeds and people dropping by with deliveries. The community garden in Jackson has been tilled and will be planted next week. One of our county agencies has received a second allotment of seed potatoes and we still have seed deliveries being made at our office. Seeds have been delivered to a juvenile detention center to be started in their greenhouse. It is amazing how the gift of seeds can impact so many lives. We are glad you are a part of our ministry. If we can be of any service to you please feel free to contact us. We are grateful for your support and prayers, Blessings, Rev. Bob Davis, Director Jackson Area Ministries. Re-Enrollment for the Kroger Plus Card Community Rewards has begun. Please take the time to enroll or reenroll so we can continue to reap the benefits of the program. 4 Summer Sunday School Adventures! G-Force Adventure Park Vacation Bible School Get revved up for Vacation Bible School at St. Andrew UMC! Children ages 3 through 5 th grade are invited to The G-Force Adventure Park June 22-25, The children will become Navigators as they make their way through exciting adventures such as revealing Bible stories, rockin praise music, cool crafts, wonderful science experiments, crazy fun games, and more! We will meet people from the Bible who used their actions to do something amazing with God. The G-Force Adventure Park will be open from 6:00 until 8:30 PM each evening. Don t miss out on this opportunity to experience God s love in action! To register your child or to offer your hands and heart in service that week, please contact Debbie Caudill dsfcaudill@gmail.com or fill out the registration form on the church website. Each year, a talented and creative team turn our church into our VBS setting. This year, we are in need of the following to be used in decorating: skateboards, scooters, roller blades, children s bicycles, BMX bikes, bicycle tires. If you are able to share any of these items for VBS week, please bring them to the church office by Thursday, June 18 th. In addition we are assembling a pvc frame, if anyone would like to take the lead on it s construction or donate materials please see Donna in the office. (we have the directions) God s Word is alive and well and ever-so-exciting. All preschool and elementary aged children are invited to experience the Bible in a series of summer adventures designed specifically for St. Andrew UMC. Bringing friends and relatives will add exponentially to the fun and excitement! During the month of June, the children will explore Camp Care-A-Lot. We will practice the art of caring for God s creation, our resources, ourselves and others through planting flowers in the Giving Garden, cooking and sharing in the Care-A-Lot Café, participating in a mini-olympics, and mission activities. July is a celebratory month. We will learn of young people in the Bible encouraged to use and celebrate their gifts. We will celebrate David s musical abilities (and learn to play and sing, too!) with It s All About That Praise!, Jeremiah s gifts of speaking with Dramatic Divas and Dashing Dons, and Timothy s talents as we get our passports stamped following Timothy s route of travel. Our annual Water Day is also in July. In August, the children and teachers become Bible Detectives. With a casebook and decoder, we will solve mysteries. There will be some surprise faith builders, too. Think Legos. Adults need not feel left out! There are opportunities to lead these activities, as our regular teachers are on summer break. Please contact Debbie Caudill for more information. dsfcaudill@gmail.com On May 24, please join us at the 10:30 Combined Worship Service for a special recognition and blessing of our graduates. Following the service, there will be a cake reception. Be sure to stop by and wish our graduates well in their continuing journeys. If you have a family member who is graduating from either high school or college, please let Donna Kirk know by calling the office at or standrewumc@ameritech.net. At that time, inform Donna if the graduate will be attending the worship service. Congratulations to all our graduates! V OLU ME 1 5 ISS U E 2 Page 4

5 Small Victories Spotting Improbable Moments of Grace By Anne Lamott Reviewed by Pat Reynolds Anne Lamott is described as a Christian writer. I am not sure that this is true. Nevertheless, I picked up her book of essays divided into four sections Companions, Families, Airborne, and Ground. I came away from the book feeling very conflicted about whether or not to even review it. My youngest daughter encouraged me to be honest. So I will do my best. Lamott s description of a hike in Muir Woods near her native Northern California with a good friend suffering from ALS is beautiful. Her struggles with God s grace and the funny wit she displays in her descriptions of family situations and personal downfalls are remarkable. Lamott gives us a lovely witness to loyalties in relationships when illness or hardships occur. However, I could not relate to some political elements on which she repeatedly pontificates. And I personally took exception to her use of graphic language as being completely unnecessary in an otherwise beautiful book of essays. The bottom line is that I enjoyed most of this well written book of essays, but the parts I didn t like could easily have been excluded to make this an exceptional read. Our food collection for the Wesley Community Center has been good. Thank you for your generosity. The need, however, continues to be great so please continue to be generous with your food donations in April. The red wagon will be placed in the Atrium on 5/3, as a reminder of our food collection on Sunday, 5/10. Spring Clean-up Day Saturday, May 2 starting at 9:00am (rain date, May 17th) You are invited to come to the church on May 10th for our Spring Clean-up Day. All helpers are welcome and appreciated..we will spread mulch and clean up the yard. Do You Love Your Mom s Cooking? This year for Mother s Day we will publish a small cookbook filled with the favorite recipes your mother or adopted mother made. Please submit your recipes by sending it as an to the church office, standrewumc@ameritech.net. We encourage you to include a short note of why this is a favorite of yours. The books will be available on Mother's Day, May 20th. In order to have your recipe published it must be in the office no later than Sunday, May 3rd. You may also drop off the recipe in the office if you are unable to send it. STARS FIELD TRIP FOR MAY STaRS St. Andrew Retirees On May 20th, STaRS will be venturing down I75 again this month. After a very interesting trip to see the model trains last month, this month we are going to visit Middletown and the BeauVerre Riordan Stained Glass Studios. I have it on good authority that this will be a very interesting tour. The tour is about an hour beginning at 10:30 where we will take in all the beautiful glass creations, sculptures, paintings and jewelry from the artisans. Following the tour we will have lunch in the Murphy s Landing Casual Dining right there. It is all handicapped accessible. Cost for the tour is $7.50 and lunch is $15.50 complete. If under 20, we will order from the menu. Please sign up on the STARS bulletin board no later than May 12. We will carpool from the church about 9:30. For more information contact Carolyn Ach at or johncarolynach@gmail.com. Page 5 F OOTPRI NTS

6 Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can. ~ John Wesley The sun is shining and the weather is warming which tells us we are ready for another planting season for the Giving Garden. We are so grateful for Ryan Smith s Eagle Scout project and the work of his Boy Scout crew. They have built a garden shed that will house our tools and packaging supplies for the garden. Many church individuals & families have been fostering our seedlings in preparation for our two planting days: May 2 nd and May 9 th beginning at 9:00 am. At our outdoor service on May 24 th, we will dedicate the garden and we will provide guided tours of the garden with stations to learn about identifying the plants, watering the garden, harvesting and packaging the produce. Susan White and her Art Club children are busy making our plant identification stakes. Here are some more ways to serve in this Outreach Ministry: Bring your trowel and join us for planting 5/2 & 5/9 Sign-up to water & weed the garden Contact Bob & Rose Gray to help with delivery of our produce Pray for the Giving Garden ministry Please prayerfully consider becoming involved.
