2 MESSAGE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT... Work Best Under Pressure (When You Have Knight s Around You) The room has been reserved well in advance, posters have been printed, announcements from the pastor after mass arranged and food has been purchased. All this centered around a night of College Football, USC at Notre Dame booked as the game of the year. In the church hall couches and tables have been arranged to avoid columns that may block the view of the big screen which the high definition projector will illuminate with a million pixels streamed from my Apple lap top. This is what it is all about and 15 minutes from game time the NBC Network live video stream stops. A brother Knight informs me while I am busy tasting the fried jumbo shrimp fresh from the fryer. This is an important job of the Grand Knight to ensure all food is fit for human consumption. Anyway, I am shocked that the pre-game show has stopped and I proceed into the hall where my lap top sits. I am told after 45 minutes the video stream stops. I try to purchase a paid service to get the game. Again, I cannot get the game. Forty men, some Knights some want to be Knights are looking at me and wondering if they should drive to Larry s a local bar that will have the game. I try everything to get the game on and little rivulets of perspiration appear on my forehead. I will be eating fried shrimp, brats, chicken wings and nachos all by myself. Then a stranger emerges from the crowd. He is a young man who looks tech savvy and he says, can I help. I said sure, I am out of ideas. He sat down and with a few strokes of the key board the game came alive on the big screen in full HD glory. The night had been saved and Larry s lost business. I asked this stranger his name and what bought him to this evening. He proceeded to tell me that he recently moved into the parish and he was a third-degree Knight wanting to transfer into our council. I traded my chicken wing for a form 100 and told him I was pleased to make that happen. This story has a greater point then a successful Membership Drive event. It illustrates why we have to continually attract and engage new members. They bring talent and ideas into our organization. If we did not have people like Dam Amiri (the stranger) joining us we would no longer grow and become immersed in our own mediocrity. Let s keep recruiting, growing and engage all members, especially our new ones. My job is so much easier when I have Knights around me. It s what I love most about this organization... 5 MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN... Priority of God - Poor amidst us "How I would like a church that is poor and for the poor," the Holy Father, Francis, told about 5,000 journalists gathered for an audience. The Pope announced that November 19 th, 2017 would be observed across the world as the World Day of the Poor Love not in word but in Deed. We live in a culture of empty words against concrete deeds. God s word became flesh and dwelt among us. That God in Word is God in Deed. In the early church, 7 men were chosen to serve the poor. In his letter, St. James exhorts Christians that faith has to be expressed in deed especially for the poor who are naked and hungry, So faith by itself, if it has not works, is dead. (James2:17) St. Francis of Assisi said, when I was in my sins, it seemed a thing too bitter to look on lepers, and the Lord Himself led me among them and I showed them mercy. And when I left them, what had seemed bitter to me was changed into sweetness of mind and body. The poor are the flesh of Christ. St. John Chrysostom in the 4 th century said, if you want to honor the body of Christ, do not scorn it when it is naked: do not honor the Eucharistic Christ with silk vestments, and then leaving the church, neglect the other Christ suffering from cold and nakedness. Poverty has the face of women, men and children exploited by base interests, crushed by the machinations of power and money. Pope Francis invites men and women of good will all over the world to reach out to the poor. The Knights of Columbus is a beacon of light in reaching out to the poor. They are the Knights of Jesus. They are the Knights of the Gospel and the Church in reaching out to the poor and the needy. Thank you Freddy C.Ss.R

6 MESSAGE FROM OUR LECTURER... I've worked with David on the Archdiocesan Stewardship Education Council for several years. I know David means what he says here. As we approach Christmas and the New Year give some thought to his suggesting that we identify what we're holding back from God. God knows, ask Him to help you identify it. John Putting complete trust in God is one of the characteristics of living a stewardship lifestyle. It means being generous with all of our gifts; not just one or two things we pick and choose. If we're honest with ourselves, when it comes to sharing, many pick the path of least resistance, the path that causes the least discomfort. We tend to share from our surplus. Many of us know people who go to daily Mass and regularly attend parish religious events, yet they don't participate in parish ministries or make a weekly financial offering at Mass. Many of us know people who are involved in many of the parish ministries, yet they don't attend Sunday Mass regularly or support the parish financially. Many of us also know people who say their time is too important or they are so busy that they can't attend Mass regularly (or at all) and can't take part in one of the parish ministries, but they are able to write the parish a check if it means they don't have to commit their time. In all these situations, these people may consider themselves to be good stewards of their gifts. But, this isn't how God calls us to share our gifts. God asks us to be generous with everything, especially that one "thing" that means the most to us. Maybe it's time, maybe it's talent or maybe it's money. Yes, money is often the one thing that we struggle with being generous. You see, by sharing all of our gifts, we keep God first in everything. It keeps us from putting other "gods" before God. It keeps us from becoming a slave to that particular gift; like our time, our skills, or our possessions and money that we think is so valuable. This is very important and it's not just a suggestion; it's a commandment. It's actually the first commandment "I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me." The point of stewardship is to help each other get to heaven and it all starts with putting our complete trust in God in all things. As is stated in the Gospel of Matthew, "So do not worry and say 'What are we to eat?' or 'What are we to drink?' or 'What are we to wear?' All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides."
