2 FR. JERRY S CORNER frjerry@skdchurch.org As many of you may or may not know our Religious Freedom is under attack. I would like to share with you some sound bites that have come from the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops. Religious liberty means more than being able to go to Mass on Sunday and pray the Rosary at home. It also means the ability to contribute freely to the common good of all Americans in accordance with our religious beliefs. Religious liberty is inherent to our very humanity, hard-wired into us by our Creator. It precedes the state itself. Government has no place defining religious employer so narrowly that it only includes houses of worship. This defines away religious liberty, reducing the freedom of religion to the freedom of worship. (More to come) A document was found in the time capsule placed in the corner stone of the old school at St. Mary s back in 1928 and was translated into English from Latin. It included the following information: In the year 1928, Pope Pius XI, Most Rev. Paul Peter Rhode, Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay, Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States of America, Frederick R. Zimmermann, governor of Wisconsin, Conrad Ripp, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Kaukauna, WI. The Architect was Smith and Brandt, the builder was William H. Farley, Moderators of the Laity included Ernest Landremann, William Calmbacher, John Grafmeier, Lester Brenzel, Malachy Ryan, Orrin W. Killeth, John Schmidt, Louis Nelson, John Van De Loo, and John Coppes. The teachers were Sisters from the Convent of Holy Family at Manitowoc Sr. M. Firmina, Superior, and Sr. M. Catherine, Principal of St. Mary s School. Coming in September, Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, the sequel to The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. It is a video study taught by Jeff Cavins, a renowned Catholic bible teacher. Matthew: The King and His Kingdom shows how Jesus builds on the foundation laid in the Old Testament to inaugurate the kingdom of heaven on earth. For this reason, it is an ideal follow-up study to the basic narrative of Scripture taught in the Bible Timeline course. (More information to come) The Picnic Committee is meeting and planning for our parish picnic. Put the following dates on your calendar, August 10, 11, & 12. Keep your eyes and ears open for ways to help. 18 days and counting. Remember to buy or sell your picnic tickets. Sign-up sheets to volunteer are located at each worship site. 3 Themes of Ordinary Time iturgy This weekend closes & out the first segment of inistry Ordinary Time in which the from Donna readings have focused on three themes: Life, Life and Life. The first life is This Life, life on earth. This life we live every day is worthy of celebration and remembrance at our liturgical celebrations. The readings and liturgy are urging us to do the right thing. The second life is the Life to Come. Our gathering and celebrating sacraments should be a means to urge us on to the fullness of Christ s presence in heaven. We gather in hope and support each other on our journey to one day gather in heaven. The third life is the Prophetic Life. All who are called to follow Jesus are called to be prophets in the world. Through the readings of how the prophets were called and formed, we should recognize the call that we receive and the discernment that we need to do every day of our lives. Baptism Follow-up Our parish along with Elizabeth Ministry would like to follow up with the families of children recently baptized at St. Katharine Drexel. We hope to contact each family on the anniversary of their child s baptism with a card and small gift - as a reminder of their commitment to Christ and of our love and concern for them. Please check our website or pick up a registration form at any of our churches First Graders: First graders for the new year are invited to register early. Children must complete one year of approved Faith Formation sessions to qualify for First Reconciliation/First Communion in second grade. One of the questions on the ACRE Education Assessment for Catholic fifth graders is: What are all baptized people called to do? If you answered Share your Faith, you would be right!
