2 FR. JERRY S CORNER frjerry@skdchurch.org I want to wish everyone a Happy 5 th Anniversary, as we celebrate our 5 th Anniversary as St. Katharine Drexel Parish. Over these past five years I hope you were able to see the working of the Holy Spirit and the work of the Lord that bore fruit and will hopefully continue to bear the fruit of God s love working through us. Together with one another and especially God great and wonderful things can happen that not only form us into the image of God, but also seeks to transform the world. On April 12, the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a document, Our First, Most Cherished Liberty, outlining the bishop s concerns over threats to religious freedom, both at home and abroad. We are about to celebrate the 4 th of July or Independence Day. It is a day in which we should reflect upon freedom, but particularly religious freedom, and maybe we need to do this more often, lest we forget what our men and women in the armed forces are fighting and dying for or what the founding fathers intended through the Constitution. We might want to begin by asking the question, What is freedom or religious freedom? Is it our ability to do what every we want, whenever we want, without thinking about the consequences to either ourselves or others? Freedom is found in recognizing the Creator and His love, loving the creator, and loving what God has created. Opposed to freedom is what we call slavery, or we choose freely to go against the natural law and God s dream for us. The HHS mandate issued by the executive branch of our government is forcing us to violate our conscience by making us purchase insurance that covers contraceptives, abortion inducing drugs, and sterilization. All these things seek ultimately, unless you are unable to see, seek to kill the very life God gave us. The federal government is also redefining marriage, making it possible for gays to marry. If Adam and Eve would have been gay, we would not be here, because as God and science has shown and proven to us, time and time again, that two women or men cannot bring forth life. Science has proven that through natural law, God s law, life can only come forth through the union of one man and one woman united in the love of God. If we do not obey natural law, God s law, we will not be using what God has entrusted to us in the way God commands us to. Have you ever tried to use something for which it wasn t intended to be used? Usually things turn out very badly. Just something to think about and on Wednesday, July 4 at 8:30 AM at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral (139 S. Madison St. in Green Bay) Bishop David Ricken will celebrate Mass. Coming in September, Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, the sequel to The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. It is a video study taught by Jeff Cavins a renowned catholic bible teacher. Matthew: The King and His Kingdom shows how Jesus builds on the foundation laid in the Old Testament to inaugurate the kingdom of heaven on earth. For this reason, it is an ideal follow-up study to the basic narrative of Scripture taught in the Bible Timeline course. In Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, you will: See Jesus as the Son of David, the Son of Abraham, the new Moses, the true manna, the new Temple, and learn what this means for us today. Learn how Jesus reconstituted the struggling kingdom of Israel around himself and brought it to a new level in the Kingdom of God, open to all people. Witness the seeds of the Church in the foundation he built on the twelve apostles, with Peter as his vicar. (More information to come) The Picnic Committee is meeting and planning for our parish picnic. Put the following dates on your calendar, August 10, 11, & 12. Keep your eyes and ears open for ways to help. 39 days and counting. Remember to pick up your picnic tickets. Feel free to also pick up picnic tickets for those whom you know or live on your street. Signup sheets to volunteer are located at each worship site. Sign up early to get your favorite spot or day. This is just to update you on the demolition of the old school at the St. Mary Site. 3 4 th of July iturgy This week we celebrate the 4 th & of July. Although it is inistry tempting to turn today s and from Donna Wednesday s Masses into dvandenheuvel@skdchurch.org patriotic celebrations, it is not liturgically appropriate to do so. The reason is that the symbols and music at liturgy must always fit the requirements of the ritual. And because the church is universal and does not belong to any particular culture of country, it is generally inappropriate to display national flags in the sanctuary; it is permitted on special occasions such as holidays. Praying for one s country is a different matter and therefore intercessions in the prayers of the faithful are more than appropriate. SKD WANTS YOU! The Worship Committee wants and needs you. Our purpose is to make sure the needs of the Parish are reflected in the liturgy and its style. We also work with other committees to present opportunities for spiritual growth. (Last year KCSS received $1,484.00). We need 20 volunteers to help sell tickets for approximately three hours during the evening races.
