The prayer shawls are created in prayer and presented with prayer to those who are hurt, ill, grief-stricken, in pain, or in need of loving care. As the prayer shawls are made prayers are said that the recipient is cradled in hope, joy, peace, and wrapped in love. They become a symbol of our caring for all of God s people as a physical reminder that God always has His arms around us, surrounding us with His love. On Sunday, September 18 Prayer Shawls will be blessed and available after all Masses on Sunday. DID YOU KNOW..Express Gas Gift Cards are at 15% until the end of September Holy Cross Scrip News! Phone: Office Hours: Monday-Thursday 8:00 am-noon & 1:00-4:00 pm Friday 8:00 am-noon CELEBRATE OUR FEAST DAY Our parish Feast Day is the Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross of Jesus. On this day we do not look at the suffering of Jesus on the cross which is done on Good Friday, and every time we pray the Stations of the Cross. Rather, on this day we celebrate Christ s victory over sin, death and the power of evil. It is through the cross that we are saved. Our parish has a wonderful feast day and we should celebrate it with due reverence and joy. One of the things we are doing for our feast day is our Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion. We chose the weekend before our feast day as a way to prepare. It has been wonderful seeing our parishioners step up for this pilgrimage, both as pilgrims (walkers), and as support through meals and prayers. Another event which is happening to celebrate our feat day is praying Evening Prayer at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, September 14. After Mass, Evening Prayer is one of the most important prayers of our Church. It is an official liturgy of the Church which is a step above devotions such as the Stations of the Cross, or the Rosary. I would like to invite parishioners to attend so that we can celebrate our parish and the victory of Christ on the Cross. Since it is a sung prayer I would like to give special invitation to all choir members. If you have never been to Evening Prayer, I think it would be very good to worship God in this way. Our parish depends on God, and your prayers. When we pray the Stations of the Cross we pray together: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world. Let us celebrate our feast. Fr. Tom Local Merchant of the Week Looking for a special plant for the house, or a beautiful bouquet of flowers for someone special? 3 40 DAYS FOR LIFE STARTS SEPTEMBER 28 Mark your calendars! The Fall Days for Life Appleton campaign begins Wednesday, September 28 and runs through November 6. We need your commitment and Christian witness to end abortion in the Fox Valley. Please encourage your church, family, bible study, youth, school or prayer group to commit to two hours per week of prayerful, peaceful vigil at the Planned Parenthood facility, 3800 N. Gillett St., Appleton. If you have never prayed outside of an abortion facility before, we have volunteers willing to meet you at the site and pray with you. Contact Jeanne at to sign up or for more info. Patriot Day Three months after the September 11, 2001, attack on the United States, President George W. Bush signed into law a bill designating September 11 as Patriot Day. Not to be confused with Patriots' Day, an April holiday in some New England states celebrating the first shots fired at Lexington and Concord, Patriot Day honors the nearly three thousand people who lost their lives on the morning of September 11, Flags are flown at half-staff throughout the country, and a moment of silence is observed at 8:46 am Eastern time, the minute the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York. While Memorial Day and similar state observances honor those who have given their lives in service to their country, Patriot Day is unique in that it honors first responders as well as the many civilians who died on that day. Liturgical Publications Inc It will take time and energy to be healed from this most tragic community wound. For the families of the victims there will be only grief and despair. For us as a community there can be healing... by helping those who suffer and are in pain. September 11, 2011 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 Attention Junior Confirmation Candidates, Sponsors, parents: An evening of orientation will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2011 from 7:00 9:00 pm. Please meet in Friendship Hall and bring any forms and payments that are due. This is an important meeting and the candidates and sponsors will participate in an Enrollment Rite. We will also discuss the Confirmation schedule and the overnight retreat. Candidates please bring your work and school calendar because you will be scheduling a Confirmation interview. These interviews will be held on September 26, 27, or 29. If you have any questions, please call the Confirmation office at Thank you and God Bless Mary & Connie Looking for a weekend away, for just the two of you? A Marriage Encounter Weekend offers you this experience. It's a time to renew your relationship, away from the everyday distraction of life. It s an opportunity to strengthen your communication and promote greater intimacy in your life together. You don't need a Marriage Encounter Weekend, but you DESERVE one. Discover Each Other Again, more deeply, honestly and warmly. The upcoming schedule consists of November 4-6 or February at the Norbertine Center for Spirituality in DePere. Later weekend dates are also scheduled. Grandparents Day Grandparents Day is celebrated by many Americans in September. Promoted by Marian McQuade of West Virginia in the 1970s, a bill was finally signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 designating the Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. Mrs. McQuade's work with seniors made her particularly attentive to shut-ins and other elderly not fortunate enough to have family members close by. She viewed National Grandparents Day as an opportunity for children to adopt a grandparent and so provide some friendship to those who might now be alone in their later years. 4 4 Welcome to Holy Cross Parish Kaukauna, WI FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Upcoming Dates for Faith Formation September 14 th In-Service for Catechist September 21 st In-Service for Catechist September 28 th -Open House and Liturgy 6 pm in Church with classroom visits to follow Catholic Hospitality: On Binding and Loosening By Kristina M. DeNeve Let s face it: we are all hospitable, right? Of course we have our problems and our off days, but overall, don t we honestly think we are a welcoming parish? Don t we honestly think of ourselves as warm and inviting persons? At our core, every person is indeed a warm, loving child of God and every parish is an open, welcoming environment. But, every parish could also stand to be more inviting, more accepting of others (especially those different in age or ethnicity), more welcoming and hospitable. Today s Gospel hits the nail on the head about why we struggle with hospitality. How? Because, like it or not, we are all very much like today s servant who forgot that his own debt had been wiped away. We ve grown comfortable in our faith and in the way things are done. We forget the precious pearl we have found. We forget all we ve been forgiven. Today s Gospel doesn t just offer us lessons on forgiveness. It also suggests how we stay open to others who are (no) different from us Second, discipleship and evangelization ARE tied to community. Always. Yes, we pray alone and we alone can act out God s unique, individual callings to us. But, we cannot be Christians alone. Today s Gospel itself points out at least four different ways Christianity happens only within community. What changes will these changes make in our parish? EMBRACING CHANGE IN THE LITURGY Some of the differences will be obvious immediately. We will have to learn new musical settings for the various parts of the Mass. We will learn new words for common prayers, such as the Creed. Those of us who began saying the Mass prayers by heart long ago will need to rely on printed texts again, at least for a while. In the early months of the translation, we may find it more challenging to pray with one voice as people adjust to the new texts and gradually commit them to their hearts. But these surface differences will give way to deeper and more significant changes. If we use the time of preparation well, we will make the changes with a deeper understanding of the Liturgy and a renewed reverence for and appreciation of the Mass. We will hear the prayers with new ears and with new hearts. Our Liturgy will be filled with new life and new spirit as we celebrate the Paschal Mystery of Christ made present for us. Copyright2010 USCCB, Washington D.C. used with permission. All rights reserved. This Advent, the church in the United States will begin using the new edition of the Roman Missal. With this new edition will come a few simple changes in the way Mass is celebrated. One of these changes is about the congregation s posture at the Our Father. In 1998, the U.S. bishops submitted a translation of the Missal to the Holy See and requested that the Orans posture (praying with hands extended for the Our Father, be permitted in the United States. Some parishes and dioceses began to implement that posture in anticipation of the permission. However, shortly after the request, the Holy See released the new edition of the Missal and so the translation process began anew. When the U.S. bishops submitted the revised texts for confirmation in 2007, they did not request permission for the Orans posture. Therefore, the Orans posture was not part of the new Missal for the United States. The posture for the congregation during the Our Father is to pray with hands folded or at one s side.
