It is often difficult to balance the details and workings of the church, with the Christ-led goal of creating and supporting followers of Christ. It s hard being a church staff person and trying to maintain my own sense of hope when worship and Sunday School attendance decline. It s sad when I think of how much more secular our society gets every day, and how worship and faith-based activities become lower on people s priority lists. It s not just about saving the church, though as a staff member I feel called to do all that I can to promote and sustain the vitality and health of our congregation. I also know that it s not always about the numbers, yet other measuring sticks are harder to read, so we tend to fall back on head counts. I was thrilled to have 80 people involved in the MCCI Saturday training back in April, and then to have 90 people vote yes to our initiatives. I suddenly didn t feel so alone. We are united in this! Here is an excerpt from that Charles Stanley book that truly reinforces what I feel the MCCI movement is intended to do in the life of our church: Most believers are convinced that it is the pastor s responsibility to bring people into the church as well as into the kingdom of God. Nothing could be further from the truth Pastors were given by God to the church to equip the people to do the work Sermons are not God s primary method for reaching people. People are His method for reaching people. What kind of people? Men and women whose lives and life-styles have been deeply affected by the truths of Scripture, people who have discovered the wonderful Spirit-filled life. God is looking for imperfect men and women who have learned to walk in moment-by-moment dependence on the Holy Spirit. Christians who have come to terms with their inadequacies, fears, and failures. Believers who have become discontent with surviving and have taken the time to investigate everything God has to offer in this life. God s method for reaching this generation, and every generation, is not preachers and sermons. It is Christians whose life-styles are empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit. People are the key to reaching people! The call to reach people for Christ is on each of us. And why? It s not about the numbers. It s about helping people find an anchor in the storm. It s about sharing the depth of joy that comes from a truly Spiritfilled life, where a person lives daily in the glory of Christ s love and redemption.

2 Spiritual Growth Celebrating Stewardship In worship, we are reclaiming stewardship as a joyful calling rather than a guilt-ridden drudgery. To be appointed a steward is to be given a position of trust and authority, charged with making wise decisions on behalf of our Lord. Stewardship isn t about gritting our teeth and sadly denying ourselves for the greater good. Stewardship is about discovering that investing in the greater good brings the joy that fills our deepest longing. On Sunday, October 15, we cap off our celebration of the stewardship of Time, Money, and Creation with a testimony and message about the stewardship of our Christian witness. We ll also be consecrating our offerings for 2018 as we bring our estimates of giving to God s altar. You won t want to miss this moment in the life of our church, as we rediscover the joy that God has created us for. Rushing in After a Disaster Millions of people are reaching out to God to be their refuge and strength right now. I believe God rushes in to be present with people at times like this, said Rev. 5 Children s Ministries & Sunday School Sunday School Update As the Sunday School students finish up learning about creation, October will bring us back to the foundational stories of the Bible. We will explore Noah s Ark, the Ten Command-ments, Moses and the Battle of Jericho. Can you imagine the varying discussions of each of these stories for every age group? The preschoolers are excited about Noah s animals, whereas the older children are thinking about the breadth of God flooding the world and Noah trusting God unconditionally. The Ten Commandments for the older children can be discussion on how God s commandments will guide their moral decision-making throughout their lives. While the preschoolers are focused on making good choices to please God and their caregivers. As always your children will spend time in age-appropriate prayer, utilizing their Bible, reflecting on the story, praising God through music, relating the story to their life and participating in a hands-on activity. Please continue to support your child s faith foundation by attending church and bringing them to Sunday School. We are off to a wonderful start in preschool, with 8 children enrolled in the 3 year old class and 17 children in the 4/5 year old class. We are assisting two families with tuition out of our scholarship fund, so we are very happy with the beginning of this school year, with room for eight more students in the youngest class and room for one more in the older class. Some specific assets to BUMPreschool are: a Christian learning environment, two certified teachers in all classes, phy ed classes taught by Gym Nation, both indoor and outdoor learning/play spaces and scholarship dollars for needy families. The first week of school in September we brought Teddy Bears the to have a friend with us, and the last week of the month we studied apples and made applesauce. Wow, what good smells wafted down the hallways when we were cooking! The weather cooperated for some wonderful outdoor time as well. As we head into October, we will learn about Fall and all the great changes that occur in God s world during this marvelous time of year! Fire Safety Week is the second week of the month, so we are looking for any volunteer firemen who might be able to come into our classes and speak with us on fire safety. We will go on an all-school field trip to Fall Harvest Orchard in Delano on October 27, and Halloween activities and parties will round out the month. Also, preschool chapel has started. We are lucky this year to be able to offer this twice a month with CurtisRieck and Debbie Bishop coming in once each and Dianne McLain covering the other week. She starts on the 11 th and 12 th, so that will be special as well! Our Preschool Advisory Board Team will meet on the first Tuesday of the month from 7:00-8:00 PM with parents, preschool director, and church team representatives. We help shape policies for the preschool, generate new ideas, keep an active connection with the church, and support the work of the preschool staff. The representatives from the congregation can be of any age and stage of life, as long as you believe in the value of early childhood education! If you are able to help, we would love for you to sit on the board. Please let Melissa know at or Melissa@buffaloumc.com Happy Fall to All! The preschoolers love crunching in the leaves, so we will go outside and enjoy our wonderful new playground as long as the weather permits.
