1 The 11th Sunday of Ordinary Time June 17th, 2018 THE MASTER STORYTELLER In today s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the master storyteller. He loved to use parables as a tool for comparing one thing to something else. In most of his parables, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing God s essence or actions with something familiar to his listeners. In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus proclaims a marvelous and irrefutable truth. His small band of disciples, as insignificant as they may have felt, would one day produce a mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit brought forth from those seeds. The extent of the growth of God s kingdom cannot be predicted. PANTRY SUNDAY Look for St. Mary s brightly colored re-usable bags in the main entry of the church. Take a bag home today and bring it back next Sunday (June 24th) filled with non-perishable donations for our local food bank. These bags will be gathered and used again for next month s collection. Blood Pressure Checks The Family Life Commission is doing blood pressure checks next Sunday (June 24th) following the 8:30 AM Mass. The Word of God on Your ipad...or your phone, or tablet, or laptop! 4 Science, Faith & Higher Education Monday, June 18th 7-8 PM Newman Center, Iowa City The Rossi Center for Faith and Culture presents an internationally recognized surgeon from Argentina, Dr. Hugo Esteva. He will speak about the challenge between science and faith in higher education. For that reason, he will consider the life of Alexis Carrel (Catholic French surgeon working in the US who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine). Come at 6:30 PM for a reception in the Multi-Purpose Room with Dr. Hugo and Ana Esteva. Little Dresses/Shorts Join us on June 19th, from 1-4 PM at St. Wenceslaus to make dresses or shorts that will be sent to children in need around the globe. Sewers and non-sewers are always welcome! Annual Garage Sale St. John Vianney in Bettendorf will hold their annual Garage Sale on June 21st-23rd. This sale supports our ongoing mission work at our twin parish in Jean Denis, Haiti. It is held on the church property (mostly indoors) and is one of Bettendorf s largest sales. Please add our sale to your calendar! Vocations Day with Fr.
