1 October 2016 John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement in 18 th century England, is famously quoted as having written: I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid lest they should only exist as a dead sect, having the form of religion without the power. And this undoubtedly will be the case unless they hold fast both the doctrine, spirit, and discipline with which they first set out. John Wesley, Thoughts Upon Methodism, (1786) This quote has become something of a rallying cry for those of us orthodox, evangelical United Methodists who have witnessed the steady drifting away of some, especially in the Western Jurisdiction of the denomination, from the doctrine, spirit, and discipline which is foundational for all Wesleyan Christians. The formation of the New Room Conference, just completed in Franklin, Tennessee, and the new Wesleyan Covenant Association (WCA) to be formed this month in Chicago are signs of life for traditional Wesleyan United Methodists, hopeful that the denomination can return to its biblical roots and halt its drifting and decline. Five members of The Fount family (see article elsewhere) are flying to Chicago in order to support and help shape the WCA, as it lends strength to this effort. Now is NOT the time to leave. Now is the time to, as Wesley wrote, hold fast. Because the vast majority of United Methodists worldwide are orthodox and evangelical, the denomination will find a way to either embrace its orthodoxy (and lovingly allow those unwilling to embrace it to leave), or it will find a way to divide so that there is a return to authentic Wesleyan Christian practice and discipline. My hope is that we will be able to put the controversies and disobedience behind us and move forward, faithful to our doctrine, spirit, and discipline, to truly reach the world for Jesus Christ, who is the only One who can transform the world! I ask for your prayers. 3 The Fount is looking for a volunteer to coordinate our outreach program on voting day. This person will need to ensure there are enough volunteers throughout the day to man the tables and to assist with putting out food and/or drinks for the voters. The coordinator does not have to be on campus all day but should be available if those volunteering need assistance or have questions. Our second Messy Church will be on Friday October 21st. (Please see the details below.) Those in attendance at our first Messy Church had a great time come and see what you missed out on the last time! Messy Church is for all people, not just kids. It is a space for all people, young and old, to use their hands and minds to experience God and the church in an unconventional way. Enjoy a friendly dinner together before joining in exploring our faith through art, music and experiments. The main dish will be provided please bring a side dish to share. WHAT: Messy Church art, experiments, music and dinner together. WHEN: October 21st TIME: 6:00-8:00pm WHERE: The Fount (The Multi Purpose Room & the Sanctuary) WHO: All People. Bring the kids, grand kids, neighbor kids or no kids at all. Page 3 - The Source
4 In a growing awareness that big change is coming to the UMC, five people will be flying to Chicago to attend the October 7 th inaugural conference of the Wesleyan Covenant Association (WCA, The Church Council approved support for the trip, deriving funds from special gifts from Church Council members. The five who will represent The Fount at the event are: George Mulak, Karl Baumgardner, Ric Seaver, Lety Seaver and Pastor Glen Haworth. Please pray for our attendees. And pray for the WCA conference (for which over 1600 people have registered), that God will guide and empower these orthodox, evangelical United Methodists to lead the denomination into a faithful future. Please pray for these Fount members and guidance for the WCA. Let them hear God s word during this association meeting and as they return to their individual churches. The one-day retreat s theme will be Fishing For Men and will be led by Pastor Glen. A catered lunch will be included in the registration of $20. All men of the church (and their neighbors and friends) are welcome, but space is limited. It will be a fun day of deep fellowship, learning, and growing deeper in love with Jesus! Do you want to know the men of the church better, come to the Men s Retreat on October 29 th! UMW is requesting that you collect toiletries for The Alice Project. Alice Harvey was a long-time volunteer at Beach Cities Interfaith Services (formerly ESA) and we honor her memory yearly with this project. The UMW s goal is to collect enough items to fill 100 bags. They will be scheduling a date in the future to fill the bags. BCIS is in need of: socks, combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, washcloths, deodorant, razors, and trial sizes of shampoo and conditioner. Page 5 - The Source
6 October will be a busy month at the Preschool! They began their annual fundraiser (cookie sale) September 26 th. You can place your order after service Sunday mornings or by seeing Pat in the church office. The fundraiser ends on October 13 th with delivery of orders the week of November 16 th. The preschool will also accept monetary donations if you do not wish to purchase any of the products being offered. Your support of this fundraiser is always appreciated and all the proceeds go directly back to the school and classrooms. Their annual Back to School night is scheduled for Tuesday, October 4th from 5:30 6:30 pm. All are invited to come and check out the preschool and meet our outstanding teachers and staff. The preschool s annual Trunk or Treat event will be held on Monday, October 31 st at 11:25 am in the back parking lot of the church. Come and see the children dressed up and enjoying this event!
